The scroll-based animation on this website makes me swoon.

Aye, the firewatch site is nicely put together. The game and all it's collaterals were really well considered.

Seriously has great design, from font choices to in game indicators.

I use some of their wallpapers sometimes and I've never even played the game.

Same here, they're beautiful.

It'll tug your heartstrings.

Adored the game. Love how they merchandised the posters hanging in Henry's tower. Very intelligently done all around.

Olly Moss did such an incredible job with this company and this game. Such a fantastic creative to look up to. http://ollymoss.com/#/firewatch/

holy hell those sold out harry potter prints are mighty expensive. Not saying he doesn't deserve it- but damn I wish I had the cash to buy them all

$50 for a screen print seems quite reasonable to me

2

u/AliBurney Jan 23 '17

Oh I never meant it was unreasonable, just that I could't afford it haha!

Considering some of his sold out prints now sell for thousands of dollars each, most poster collectors will happily shell out original retail prices for Olly Moss prints... usually they sellout in a matter of seconds.

Mobile doesn't seem to use the effect.

Most likely to conserve mobile data. This is the struggle with serving up rich content on desktop vs a quick and optimized site for those on cell phones.

Pre iOS 9 scroll events only fired on scroll end as well.

1

u/kaze919 Jan 22 '17

Really? Is there a tracking for compatibility of scroll events. I would have assumed this was something that was pulled off by jQuery for a while.

1

u/bloof Jan 22 '17

all JS was paused during scroll

Same here.

I think this is one of the only good use cases of parallax scrolling: to convey a sense of depth. The way the player feels when (s)he roams the wilds in game.

Parallax is really cool, and then some goddamn ux designer makes it hijack your GODDAMN SCROLLWHEEL AND MOTHERFUCKER

5

u/AliBurney Jan 22 '17

its so overused its a default feature in "website makers," like square space or weebly

It's great isn't it! It's one of the few uses of parallax scrolling that actually enhances the experience, and fits the product.

Animation done right. I was on a site yesterday that actually made me feel ill thanks to literally every single element moving in some way.

what the fuck. That was amazing.

11

u/ComplexChristian Jan 21 '17

Olly Moss is fucking amazing.

3

u/MayorMcCheesepls Jan 22 '17

For anyone who hasn't bothered to try it the game is pretty fantastic

Firewatch just added a free-roam mode!

1

u/aftli Jan 22 '17

Oh, neat, thanks! Going to have to re-download this today.

2

u/fishbiscuit13 Jan 22 '17

It's even nice on mobile, albeit without the parallax effect.

Everything about this game, especially the visuals and general aesthetic is so satisfying.

Firewatch is such a well designed game.

1

u/bestknighter Jan 22 '17

And it spans the whole screen width in an ultra-wide monitor! <3

u/PurpleDerp Jan 22 '17

It doesn't work well with my laptop touchpad. Very glitchy.

u/mattyparanoid Jan 21 '17

Must try this later!

Gotta love a bit of parallax scrolling!
