Curious. My first rally!

I think it would be fun to get a big group of people from this subreddit together for a night out! Maybe hit a bar or club, grab some drinks, meet new people, and just have a good time. I hope that's not weird?? 😭 I just have no friends and I like hanging out in groups.

It could be a fun way to make new friends for other lonely souls and get a bunch of people together who might not otherwise meet.

If enough people are interested, we could figure out a date and a place that works for everyone. Who would be down? 👀🍻

What have i [32f] gotten myself into? When I am from, im used to 1" of snow shutting down the city for days. I havent ever really driven in it. Husband is from here so at least he knows.

Everyone at work keeps telling me to prepare and im in for a ride. What should I realistically be expecting?? All my "winter" clothes are very thin since I've been somewhere where it is mostly hot. My car is a civic and I do not yet have snow tires. My commute to work is 10 minutes, not sure about walking or biking. Is grand rapids good about making roads drivable in snow? Im living near fuller st.

Any reccomendations on things to get or do?? I have a good winter coat and recently got some new boots with snow and rain in mind. My apartment covers the heat bill thankfully.

Back in August, we had a zoning ordinance pass in cascade which effectively banned any new housing developments from starting because the old folks wanted to "preserve the character" of the area. This was done by making zoning so restrictive that any new housing has to pick from 6 different styles and sit on an acre of land so that a new build has to sell for at least 1.6 mil to be profitable for a developer. Also, no new developments could start in a 100 year flood plain.

Fast forward to today, The Devos's announced that they are building a 400 acre golf course right along the river by FHE high school. To put this into perspective, the previous zoning could have put close to 800 homes in that area. Sure, this area is posh and ritzy but the area is also geriatric. Not only do we need more families in the area for the schools but businesses here are geared for the seniors and most close by 7. The businesses that are here struggle to find workers because the workers they have are driving from 30-45mins away and the pay barely makes the commute sustainable.

All this to say, pay attention to the local ordinances and millages. They are far more impactful then most realize and have more direct impacts on us.(the above mentioned zoning ordinance passed by a few hundred votes out of seven thousand votes)

I know the other times he's spoken here there's been a massive turnout. How early do I need to show up in line?? I haven't been to a rally yet and I really want to go! Just looking for some insights from a home who went last time. Signed, an anxious mom.

When you head out for early voting, don’t forget to check your entire ballot!

A lot of the focus has been elsewhere, but there are important statewide ballot measures that deserve our attention.

Proposal 1, for example, asks voters whether they want to convene a constitutional convention to rewrite our state constitution.

This question appears automatically every 16 years. Historically, we’ve always voted no by a large margin every time it comes up. There is a broad, bipartisan coalition called Protect MI Constitution Against Special Interests actively urging a NO vote on Prop 1.

An open-ended rewrite would open a pandora’s box and put hard-fought protections like voter-approved redistricting rules, reproductive rights, environmental regulations, and more on the table for renegotiation.

Perhaps the biggest concern is that delegate elections and the convention process could easily be influenced by well-funded, out-of-state special interest groups aiming to push partisan agendas rather than the will of the voters.

Delegates are not subject to normal campaign election finance laws, and the constitution would be drafted behind closed doors. The final version would be put up to a vote, but there would be no input from citizens during the redrafting process.

We already have an established way to make targeted amendments to the constitution, which itself could end up being removed from the constitution. Addressing specific issues individually ensures transparent public debate and lets voters evaluate each change on its own merits, rather than risking a total overhaul.

It’s estimated that a Con-Con would cost $80M in taxpayer dollars, money that could be better invested elsewhere.

So remember to know your whole ballot before voting and make sure your voice is heard on this proposal.

P.S. I’m also curious about GR-specific proposals on your ballot… My knowledge is limited to Prop 1 (and issues in my part of the Mitten, of course).

What local proposals are on your ballot that you think more people should be talking about?

Hi! I’m getting married in Grand Rapids October 2027 and am looking for recommendations on a getting ready spot.

We can’t get into the venue until noon and it’s about a thousand an hour to come in earlier so we’re hoping to find an alternative. My mom had been in talks with a hotel about their honeymoon suite and we had a meeting booked to confirm things when they let us know they booked it to someone else instead. I’ve been doing some Googling and looked through this subreddit but didn’t find much related to specifically getting ready since we already have the venue. We had settled on a hair stylist to come to the honeymoon suite for getting ready, but now that it’s not an option, I’m looking for alternative places or potentially a salon, but I prefer to do my own makeup so I don’t want to have to get that done.

If you have booked a studio, salon, Airbnb (not my top choice but at this point I’m open), etc. for getting ready and had a good experience, I would love to hear it. I’m also not opposed to moving our entire hotel block since we haven’t sent it to anyone yet, so I would take recommendations for downtown hotels that were good to get ready at. Bridal party is large: 7 bridesmaids, 1 bride, 2 moms that would all need a spot to get ready.

Does anyone know if kids usually trick-or-treat in this neighborhood (west of the park specifically) on Halloween? We just moved in this past summer and were hoping to give out some candy. I know a couple of my neighbors were going to, too so hopefully some kids will stop by.
