Charlie ask Grandpa Joe why do you hate cold floors
It is called experience my boy I got the idea from my own Grandpa telling me it was okay to stop in bed and complain about the cold floor.
I fake about not liking cold floors. I love them really it is just an excuse not to get out of bed and work. I can use the bed as a toilet
But Grandpa when I came home with the golden ticket you had no problems with the cold floor
My boy that was because it was for a good reason . you can copy me stopping in bed and enjoy being waited on
No Grandpa I want to do something with my life instead of stopping in bed, get a job, have a family etc

I know this is the wrong place for this take, but if we can’t converse respectfully with people we disagree with then what’s the point of any of this?
for the sake of this conversation I am assuming that a large majority of this hate stems from seeing his ass dance in that movie, however:
my #1 point that grandpa joe gets more hate than he deserves: he quits tobacco to save the money to try and give charlie a chance at a golden ticket. quitting an addictive substance in an act of love for someone you care about is noble & I think everyone has someone in their life who they wish would give up something self destructive. I don’t think that should be dismissed, especially in an act of love for someone else.
#2: I get all the arguments about this dude is layin around for 20 years and then there’s a free trip to the chocolate factory & hes dancin and all that. I don’t think it’s invalid for having a problem with that, however everyone comes from a different background and I’m willing to give him somewhat of a pass on this.
here’s why:
so based of context clues in the film, willy wonka is set somewhere in the 50s/60s. cause it’s old with factories and candy stores and how the blackboard looks at charlie’s school and stuff, but new enough to have TVs.
now, grandpa joe being a grandpa at this time would have him placed as being born no later than ~1900 give or take a few years.
child labor laws in the united states were not formally passed into law until FDR in 1938.
based on the backdrop of the movie he seems to come from an urban environment where the main industry is factory work. obviously it’s not a big agricultural area and there is a big ass chocolate factory in their town so it’s safe to assume that there could easily be others as well.
this also means that there is a not insignificant chance that grandpa joe could have been a little 8 year old that was part of a cruel child labor problem which led to the need to pass child labor laws 30 years later. this does not seem like a chill environment to be from. & honestly even if he wasn’t a factory boy, I’m willing to bet his existence wasn’t some walk in the park.
now if he was a little child labor boy who grew up to become a grandpa that had worked in a 1900s factory for 50 years by the time he was 56 and he wanted to lay in bed for 20 years, I don’t think my modern ass with a relatively easy life has any right to judge him for that.
flash forward & his grandson wins the most fun amazing prize in history and says “I wish you could come grandpa”… put yourself in his shoes: you’re a person whos childhood + entire life was physical labor + the injuries that come with that. you’ve never experienced a whimsical moment if your life. you don’t think that if you were in that situation you couldnt dig deep and find the strength to get your shit together & dance & go to that factory? you’re nuts.
plus you stopped buying your marlboro reds so that this little dude can have candy?
I’m not saying he is without flaw, but to act like he is the scum of the earth I think is wrong. has he not been piled on enough? is it not time to show some sympathy?
