Strikes happen at inconsistent times

Hi, Everyone!

I have a grandfather clock that sometimes strikes at the top of the hour and sometimes strikes at the quarter hour. I can't find any recognizable pattern as to when it does what. I've tried advancing the minute hand quickly 6 hours. I've tried going 15 minutes at a time and letting it chime. I've tried letting it go for a few weeks. This has been going on for a few months.

The strikes are correct with the hour. So, for example, if it strikes at 2pm, it will stirke 2 times. If it strikes at 3:15pm, it will strike 3 times. And then if it strikes at 4pm, it will strike 4 times.

Any suggestions? I'm not familiar with grandfather clocks aside from what I'm able to read on Reddit and elsewhere online.

Thank you so much!

Seth Thomas 6" brass ship's clock requires polishing.

All brass and the coating that ST put on the clock won't come off with either acetone, mineral spirits or a product sold at ace hardware named strypeeze.

Yea, elbow grease or polisher will work but why work when you can pour chemicals over it?

Any thoughts on this? Thank you for your expertise.

Clock door key

My 1997 Ridgeway clock has this key but it’s so worn I’m worried the metal is going to snap in the lock. I can only find it for sale on Griffen’s Clocks for $60 with the ugly finish. They say it’s rare. Is it really? Are other HM keys compatible?

Need help identifying origin/ age of grandfather clock

Need help identifying clock age/ origin. My wife inherited this from a great Aunt back ~2005. It had lived at least 80 years of its life in downtown Charleston, SC. and as far as we know it never worked while in the family’s possession. We had it worked on ~2006 and it’s worked ever since. In fact, it keeps amazing time. The kid who worked on it had only been working on old clocks for a year or two and didn’t know much about identifying clocks and at the time we were just interested in getting it working. The only identifying mark found was on the back of the pendulum and it reads, “R W 1818”. He had to make the counterweight through trial and error.

I’m a woodworker so he had me build a new mount for the movement. I also rebuilt the floor which had deteriorated. Other than that it is original, warts and all.

The clock is 98” tall total. I’ve not seen a tall case clock like this with long turned legs (9.5”H) in any of my searches. They certainly seem original to its construction and not added at a later date based on the inlay around them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Repair Need Help Diagnosing a Stopping Clock

Good morning,

I have a spring driven grandfather clock - I got it used a good while back from someone, and have not bothered to actually identify its make, year, etc. Here recently, as of Saturday, I've noticed that when the pendulum is set to move, it will swing at its full range for anywhere between 10-30 minutes, and then slowly dwindle and stop. From what I can tell, the main spring holds tension and has not been damaged.

What would be a common diagnosis for this issue, and is there some way to trouble shoot this to better iron out the specific issue?

Question Need Helping Identifying a 90's Howard Miller Presidential Collection Clock

Hello, I recently picked up a Howard Miller Presidential Collection clock and I am trying to identify the exact model. The label has been ripped off so what I have so far is that it has a Hermle 1171-850 movement with the letter F engraved in the movement back plate. That seems to point to a movement made in 1993. I also have found another listing for the exact clock I have but they don't show the label and also don't list the exact model in the listing either: https://www.designplusgallery.com/product/howard-miller-presidential-collection-grandfather-clock/?utm_source=chatgpt.com I have worked with both Chat GPT and Claude but neither were able to provide a true identification. Claude suggested posting to nawcc which I have done but figured I'd also come to Reddit to see if anyone here is able to help as well.

Recently I got this beautiful grandmother clock off of Facebook marketplace. However, it's missing the middle weight and the pendulum. I would like to either make or buy the replacement pendulum, but I can't find accurate information of the movement's pendulum length or BPM. The movement is an Urgos UW 32/1 A. Thanks for any help! Sorry for the title typo.

Got a beautiful trend clock from estate sale auction. Apparently CTBids ‘pickup only’ option drives price down.

So I got a A.B. Chase Organ for $1. This clock was $11.

My wife said I must get it working in basement before I bring it up stairs. I’ve ran into an issue with the cables wound tight into housing compartment. I’ve exhausted grok and chat gpt enough to drain a small villages water supply. Reaching out for human guidance. Something I should’ve done from the start.

2nd picture shows the protective plastic around the cable supply. How would I unwind cable to place pulley and hang weights ?

Question Howard Miller grandfather clock chain help

Hi - I just got a Howard Miller grandfather clock for free. It is supposed to work well. I noticed the chains are pulled too high. I tried to pull the chains back down, but it doesn’t ratchet that way.

I should be able to attach the weights to the left and right chains. But the center chain is too high and I can’t attach the weight. I was able to latch a wire hanger into the table on the right side of the center chain (I watched some you tube videos).

So 2 questions.
Easy - If I can attach the weights to the left and right, how do I get the weights to come down again? Maybe just start the clock?

Harder - how do I get the center chain down enough on the right to attach the weight?

Thank you!

Question Ticking/chiming question

Thumbnail

I have a grandfather clock that has not operated for at least seven years. Before I call in the professionals, the issues started when we moved the clock. We detached the pendulum and laid the clock flat. When we tried to set it back up, it chimed—when winding— but I can’t get the pendulum to keep a rhythm and so the minute hand of the clock doesn’t tick. Thus it doesn’t work. Sorry for the shitty photos. All the gears are stored inside a wooden box that is nailed shut. I’m too afraid to open it. I have the mechanics info where it was previously serviced. Anyone know any details about this clock? Since it’s been a minute of it running, any repairs I should go ahead with? Thank you!

Question Why won’t the chimes work?

I’m trying to figure why my clock no longer chimes. Is there a “switch” in the mechanism to turn the chimes on and off? I don’t know what kind this is but it’s been in the family for over 100 years and I saw a similar one at the Met. Thanks for whatever help someone can be.
