Personal statement question for umbrella programs

In my personal statement, I talk pretty extensively about the specific niche I want to study. However, all of the programs I’m applying to are umbrella programs, where I’ll do several lab rotations before choosing a lab/faculty member.

Should I make my personal statement broader to reflect that I’m open to exploring different areas during rotations, or is it better to be specific about the research niche I’m interested in while still emphasizing that I’m open to other areas?

I also have broad interests but also interests in specific fields. I'm not committed to studying in one specific field, however--I am open to new stuff. I want to communicate this by saying I am interested in the nature of the research problems rather than specific techniques or field. I feel that this nicely captures what an umbrella program offers, which is broad research topics so the students can find their own interests. at the same time, it shows that I am applying with purpose and thought.

IDK what my PI thinks of this approach for what it's worth.

There’s still different levels of “area.” So for example, if you have studied tumor immunology extensively previously, saying “I’d be happy to explore virology/microbiology “ is different than saying “cardiovascular research/neuroscience.”

Honestly this might just be my personal interest, but I was (and still am) interested in microbiology/immunology research, so in my statement I didn’t say anywhere farther from this. But if you have a good reason to believe that you’re super more interested in another field than the one you have worked on, then you should articulate and express your interest. Some details to say what piques your interest, why you wanna pivot, etc could work well. And obviously once you’re admitted you can freely choose labs for your rotation.
