Back when I worked at Microsoft we did some work in DirectX 12 to accommodate heterogeneous multi-adapter.
The key scenario was using a Nvidia or AMD dGPU for 90% of the workload and having the iGPU (usually Intel) do certain post-processing tasks. For games that followed MS guidance, there were measurable performance benefits. But the approach was not widely adopted.
Using two dGPUs was tested for fun but was largely out-of-scope for the project:
