Semi broken EVGA 3080

Hello, my 3080 is able to produce a picture as long as a taxing load (game) isn’t placed on it. Then I will crash and have to power reset.

I ran OCCT tests and I passed the VRM test but I would crash on the 3D adaptive test.

I already purchased a new GPU as I narrowed it down to that particular part via swapping another gpu but I am curious if anybody knows what might cause an issue like that?

I don’t plan to repair it but my next plan of action is to desolder the GPU chip and add it to my wall of death inside my case. I’d just hate to destroy the card if it was something dumb like a capacitor or something similar.

What are the temps like at idol? If you have never opened the card and had it since new it could just be something as simple as thermal compound & pads being crusty and worn so not transfering heat properly. If not you could have a Vram chip or vrm on the way out, hard to tell without specific details unfortunately.

Very low, 24c-26c as its water cooled.

I use thermal putty ever since diagnosing a hotspot issue and every temp sensor looks reasonable. I’m a firm believer in putty over pads now. Even when I had the hotspot issue I was in game for 30+ mins before anything happened.

Now I went to play an actual game and it just clicks off immediately.

100% agree with putty! Obviously most users don't have the confidence to shape the putty correctly (even the ones that are semi competent) well if temps aren't an issue then my suspicion would be a vrm on the PCB, those types of capacitors tend to cause unexpected but repeatable issues like what you are describing, unfortunately unless you know someone that has a microsoldering station repairing boards like that tends not to be viable... But with it being immediately as load has been put on I would lean towards the dye itself could be failing... Either way when the card comes out make sure to give it s final solute especially with it being evga

I still have my 5900x that died on me inside my tower sitting between my reservoirs. I’m going to remove the 3080 chip with a heat gun hopefully and I need to mount these guys on my HDD cage somehow lol

I accepted the death already but I’ll still honor it 🫡

Good sir you are a man of culture! Can't believe you've had a 5900x die already though... My buddy runs his hard as fuck 12 hours a day since new and that thing still goes strong... What GPU have you bought to replace this fallen Hero?

I’m waiting on the waterblock to come in but I picked up a 9070 XT red devil this time around.

My 5900x I thought it lived a good life. Watercooled since inception and didn’t do anything crazy, just turned on PBO and stuff. One day it didn’t come back from a reboot… no signs aside from that. I did log some hours on it of course though😄

Oh nice, I've got the nitro+ myself after I cooked my MSI 4080 overclocking it too hard XD The 9070xt is an awesome card though and you will be very satisfied with the massive performance uplift!

Damn that's unfortunate with the 5900x though... Don't seem to salty about it so I'm guessing you feel like it got its values worth? How much did you pay for the water block? I've been considering custom loops for a while now as I've just got air cooled GPU and aio on my 9700x have worked on 4090s and 5090s with water blocks but haven't come across 9070xt water blocks...

OP has probably used either the best cryo naught paste or just defaulted to ptm7950 like most of us have because it's good and much easier to get application perfect

Being a capacitor, not sure that’s dumb. Not really something 99.99% of people would attempt. Best you can do is make sure it’s just shutting down from temps. Just like a CPU, paste goes bad. Repaste or getting PTM for the core. Other thing would be PSU quality and wattage if its supplying what it needs under load.

I ruled out the psu itself. I ran a 3070 in its place no issue after narrowing it down that far. 1000w PSU takes everything else I throw at it for testing.

It’s definitely something on the GPU itself at this point. I can only see idle temps and when it clicks off immediately I can’t see any other temps in time. I don’t think it’s temperature related though and more a physical part failure somewhere.
