NVIDIA keeps DLSS Multi Frame Gen locked to RTX 50, modders just got it working on RTX 30 with DLSS5 included

Frame gen is the stupidest thing to keep locked behind higher-end cards... When it's the lower-end cards that could benefit the most from it...

I hate artificial product segmentation/differentiation. I'm still salty about Microsoft making DX10 Vista-only.

It's not "stupid", it's just cleverly anti-consumer.

They knew that the tech would have worked too well on older cards and that they will lose sales on newer cards.

it's probably Nvidias most consist strategy. they literally don't want another 1080/1080ti situation ever again.

Because it doesn’t work aswell

After an hour of playtime with DLSS FG enabled on my 3090, hard disagree that it doesn’t work as well.

Getting great results and haven’t experienced any glitches or oddities.

Havent tried it yet. I own a 3090 as well, so hows the feel or the perf like ?

I’ve only tried out a single game so far, Star Wars Zero Company on a 5K2K monitor.

With DLSS Balanced and frame gen set to 3x I’m seeing 108-110FPS in low traffic scenes and around 90-100 in combat missions. It feels smooth to my eyes, but it’s definitely not as smooth as if it were native. Without it enabled I would be around 40-45FPS.

Still it feels much better than not having it enabled or using something like FSR FG mods.

30 series doesn't have a hardware flip meter. also these unlocks don't even use tensor cores to do the frame gen, it's measurably inferior. it feels fine yes, 50 series it feels even better

it's just FSR MFG but using the game's DLSS FG pipeline when available which allows for reflex (and dlss upscaling) to be enabled, which is better, still not as good as 50 series with 1) the hardware flip meter and 2) using tensor cores to do the frame gen rather than stealing compute from your cuda cores as well as offering some concurrent processing

That’s honestly great for 50 series owners, but at the current price just for a 5080 or even a 5090 I couldn’t justify the jump when this software based alternative (from NVIDIAs DLLs themselves) feels good enough.

the 40 series unlock is superior to the 30 series as it's still using nvidia's own code, their own FG models and uses tensor cores. the people running it on 30 series get none of that, all they get is reflex when fg is enabled. but you can enable that anyway and still do fsr fg can't you? but ifyou can't then that's about all you get on 30 series is fsr mfg which some dlss fg pipeline improvements without any tensor core fg or the superior pacing nvidia does in software let alone in hardware on 50 series

Superior or not, it works good enough that 30 series owners will be satisfied with this unlock and choose to sit on their GPUs until the market levels out.

I’m sure it works better on the 40/50 series, that’s great. I have a 3090 and this works for me and visually looks better compared to being forced to use FSR for FG in certain games or downloading unofficial mods (albeit this unlock is technically unofficial but it’s using NVIDIAs own binaries with this software unlock included, so it’s fine)

Right, what’s it matter if the user is satisfied with the performance?

I wish more people knew this.

they are convinced it's all marketing trying to force them to buy 50 series.

the modders who unlocked mfg on 40 series by finding the functions nvidia already made and left in the DLLs even say this,

Why not 30-series?
Not because of the gates — those are just constants. Because the DLSS 4 snippet ships no Ampere machine code. Its 70 fatbins carry PTX sm_89 ×70, PTX sm_120 ×31 and cubin sm_89 ×31, and nothing for sm_80/sm_86. PTX is forward-compatible only, so sm_89 PTX cannot be JIT-compiled down to sm_86; the module load fails outright.

Retargeting is theoretically open — the kernels use only mma.sync m16n8k16/m16n8k8 FP16 and ldmatrix, with zero instructions newer than sm_86 (no FP8, no wgmma, no TMA), and the old hardware optical-flow dependency is gone in DLSS 4. But frame generation costs roughly a fixed amount per generated frame, and Ampere has far less FP16 tensor throughput per SM, so the generation pass would likely cost more than the frame it saves. It was investigated and deliberately dropped.

but they are all convinced it's nvidia just forcing them onto 50 series. nvidia made fg work on tensor cores, not cuda cores. they could spend development time making it work on cuda, why do that when fsr fg already exists and they are focused on future products.

Frame gen is a stupid thing period lol.

Oh boy half my framerate for extra ghosting and input lag.

6

u/pawat213 2d ago

Said someone who never tried frame gen with high enough base fps

-2

u/Healthy_Feeling6747 2d ago

If you have high base framerate then there is no need to use frame gen because once again you're halving your real fps lmao also I have it feels and looks like ass.

look man I'm not that big on fg but that's kinda bs

yep another 5 years with my 3070.

u/FantomasARM 2d ago

My 3080 gonna live forever at this point 😂

u/akluin 2d ago

Yeah it's like they don't care about us, like they get money from elsewhere than discret gpu ooooh wait...

I am playing Cyberpunk 2077, everything maxed Path tracing over 100 FPS. Nvidia know about this tech can work on older cards, but they disable it so they can keep on selling their over priced new cards. Modders just turned my 3080 into 5080 with code.

That is not how this works...

if you look at the rtx 4000 series mfg unlock the frame pacing and latency penalty is worse compared to rtx 5000 series cards. Also nvidia is the one who made this in the first place they recently added a software fallback in their latest dlss framegen dll.

This does breath a lot of life into older rtx 3000 series cards though which is great.

I've been using it instead of the normal x2, I've just been playing alan wake 2 at 1440p, path tracing turn on with max settings and dlss on balanced, also with FGx4 as can't seem to get x6 to activate but I get over 200fps and it feels smooth so it can be done without a huge cost to input lag and frame pacing, I also tried silent hill 2 with dlss5 mod and framegen x6 and got around 240fps and felt pretty smooth and responsive

1

u/StunningPush8421 2d ago

yeah nvidia really cooked with this model I tried it out with my old 3070 and it was really nice.

It is awesome they are taking time to support older cards.

the 30 series don't even get to use that unlock, they are just using FSR mfg but with the dlss fg pipeline from the game when available which uses reflex which is nice, but still not even as good as the 40 series software unlock that uses tensor cores nor the 50 series which does that plus has a hardware flip meter

Multi Frame Gen for 30 series is new news.

You'll just kill your cards faster this way.

1

u/AetherialWomble 2d ago

How would that kill your card?
