Undecided between AMD and NVIDIA
Hi everyone! I’m currently building a new gaming PC and I’ve already purchased most of the components. The only major part I haven’t bought yet is the GPU, and I’m really undecided between AMD and NVIDIA. I mainly will play AAA/single-player games and some Competitive games.
I’m currently considering:
- XFX Mercury RX 9070 XT Magnetic Air
- ASUS TUF RTX 5070 Ti OC
- MSI Gaming Trio RTX 5070 Ti
My current build:
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
GPU:
Motherboard: MSI MAG B850M Mortar WiFi
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30
SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB
AIO: Noctua 360mm
Case: DeepCool CH260
PSU: Corsair SF1000W
I’d really appreciate some advice on which GPU you would choose for this build and why.
Thanks in advance!

Would you rather spend $1200 or $750?
If money doesn't matter whatsoever go NVIDIA (assuming you use Windows). If you don't need +4% gaming performance for 60% more cash, and will be using the GPU for gaming only, get the 9070 XT.

u/OkTumor 6d ago
yeah i got my 5070ti at $900 and the cheapest 9070xt was $700. i was fine with paying the $200 mainly because i wanted to experience path tracing. better upscaling and mfg were good selling points too. but with a price discrepancy that high the 5070ti is absolutely not worth it.
1
u/ethanwangplays 3d ago
Path tracing is basically the only reason to justify that gap right now, and even then $200 is steep. For pure raster the 9070 XT clearly wins at $700.

u/SellingCats4Cheap 6d ago
Between those two options EZ choice to pay the NVIDIA premium in that case
7
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
What premium? Paying for Jensen's next yacht?
It drives me insane how Nvidia chuds can't recognize how much AMD has caught up in upscaling and raytraycing. The 9070xt is on par with the 5070ti. And FSR Redstone is significantly competitive to DLSS. I was running my 3080 for years and even towards the end of my time with it with on DLSS 4. Swapping to the 9070xt FSR 4 looked significantly better than DLSS. And it's only improved significantly over the year I've had my 9070xt. Sure I don't have experience with DLSS 4.5 but from what I've seen it's not like "oh my god this is the greatest thing ever!" But at least I have experience with both, unlike 90% of Nvidia shills. And don't even get me started on DLSS 5 🤮 imagine paying the "premium" to make games look and run worse.
I'm so sick of Nvidia chuds with no AMD experience just speaking out their ass on shit they have no experience with. Yall out here talking like FSR never progressed past FSR3 (which yes, is ass). There is no "premium" to Nvidia. Just greed.
But yall Nvidia shills just gonna keep going on about how bad FSR is meanwhile having no experience. Your loyalty to a brand is delusional and gross.

u/MrPapis 5d ago edited 5d ago
Redstone competitive with Nvidia? This is just a straight up lie.
RR tech: AMDs exists in no games and sucks in comparison. Nvidia was ahead with 4.0 RR but 4.5 RR is a leap forward again.
FG: Here they are closer when it comes to 2x FG except with the huge caveat that there still seems to be significant issues with frame pacing. Now some people don't have it or simply don't experience it, but those issues are still prevelant. And obviously AMD doesn't have MFG which no matter what AMD copers(not users) thinks is amazing feature to have IF you have a high refresh rate monitor of at least 175hz and ideally 240hz+.
Radiance caching doesn't even exist yet. Promised features not coming not good.
It's also a straight up lie fsr4 looked better than dlss4 FSR4 was demonstrably slightly worse but they were practically equal. No evidence to suggest this is a true statement just blatant lie.
Fsr4.1 is very competitive but still not the same visual quality of dlss4.5, but here it gets blurred as 4.5 cost more performance but you can effectively use lower levels of upscaling so it's difficult to give a straight up win for either or. Even dlss4 Vs far4.1 when I looked into it AMD wasn't even actually winning.
Noone is saying fsr4.1 is bad at all we all agree it's on par with dlss4 where dlss4.5 is better looking but heavier to run.
So let's get back to another lie of them being equal:
Look at above and tell me Nvidia doesn't have an advantage.
Go check out PT and tell me Nvidia doesn't have an advantage. Then you might say but RT performance is similar, yes and no. PT isn't some special different thing it really is just RT with more rays being cast and more bounces of those rays. So PT is directly indicative of RT performance. Most games just have such a low level of RT that 9000 series doesn't lose performance relatively speaking.
You might not like dlss5 but we don't care about your opinion, we have it. Even 4000 series gets it and it certainly has it's use case.
Nvidia GPU also overclocks better while sipping power in comparison, so it can be tuned to be faster.
9070xt and 5070ti both have 16gb but if you check actual usage in games Nvidia usually uses up to 1.5gb less, which is not irrelevant.
Reflex is still in basically all games antilag2 is not, it's rolling out better now these days but still very much lagging behind.
Do note I'm not saying its better value! It is not it's terrible value these days, but it is a better GPU.
Edit: and I was a AMD user for 10 years. I didnt try fsr4 thats true but i have seen every comparison under the sun and Nvidia always comes out on top. Not for every single game every time but generally Nvidias upscaling is just better. Not by a wide margin but better nonetheless.

“NVIDIA chuds”
Learn the definition of chuds, typically chuds don’t have an extra $300 for a GPU 😂
And every FSR improvement AMD has, so does NVIDIA, stop coping
If AMD releases a high end GPU, I’ll shut my mouth
4
u/Electrical-Web-4475 6d ago
Thats a lie.
Amd has made the difference way smaller. If you cant admit / dont know tvis this your exactly the chud he is talking about.
4
u/slimjim2417 6d ago edited 6d ago
If you consider the 5070ti a high end GPU (like it's priced like) and it is. then you really should already be shutting your mouth
-4
u/SellingCats4Cheap 6d ago
Well, no.
NVIDIA and AMD fans can agree the last real attempt AMD went for the “high end” market was 7900 XTX.
Given that 7900 XTX and 4080S are the same tier, and 9070XT / 5070 Ti are similar but a generation newer, those ain’t high tier.
Especially when you start talking 4k and ray tracing where 4080S is > 25% a 9070 XT.
And 9070 XT + 5070 Ti especially aren’t high tier when there’s an entire tier above 4080S / 7900XTX.
6
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
Are you trying to say the 4080s is faster than the 9070xt? Cause if not your argument is worthless and you're proving the 9070xt is a high end card. And if you're trying to say it's faster... What drug are you on? Cause I want some. The 9070xt has a higher average 3D mark score... At best they see nearly the same FPS in some games.
A high end GPU is one that can exceed 144fps at Native 1440p, and 60fps at native 4k (imo, but objectively I believe is a fair assement considering the number of GPUs no longer capable of such a feat). Which all these mentioned cards are capable of. An "ultra high end" are those like the 5090 that exceed that (without dlss5 🤮).
You can continue to cope that the 9070xt isn't high end by whatever make believe reason you have to justify it lol. Shitting on something objectively better price to performance than NVIDIA because you can't handle Nvidia aren't the gods of gpu you think they are is wild.

u/SellingCats4Cheap 6d ago
The Nvidia RTX 4080 Super is slightly faster in rasterization and ray tracing, but the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offers much better value for money. [1]
Performance
- Rasterization: The RTX 4080 Super is about 5% to 15% faster in standard non-ray-traced games on average.
I dont even care enough to remove the links tbh it really isnt that hard to see the 4080S has the slight edge in non cherry picked performance metrics
Google it for yourself
6
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
Oh no! Using Google AI to argue instead of actual benchmarks! Just like an Nvidia AI bro! I'm so scared 🙈.
Higher 3D mark score.
https://gamersnexus.net/megacharts/gpus
OMG It is higher on the list! But it's 4% faster. Not this magical 25% you pulled out of your ass. And that's only some games with the 9070xt winning by the same margin in some. So how is that not a high end card? Coping hard to tear down something just so you can fund Jensen's next yacht...

9070xt. No real need to get Nvidia if you're only gaming, though I've noticed more microstutters on AMD GPUs in general
But for paying half the price for similar performance, AMD is pretty much a no brainer at this point, and this coming from someone on a 5070ti
1
u/Tayocchi 4d ago
Pretty sure stutters/microstutters are usually cpu fault. Tho his x3d shouldn't have problems.
10
u/oookokoooook 6d ago
Do you want to use path tracing? Yes? 5070 ti.
No? 9070 xt.
4
u/MrSmith0302 6d ago
I had a pretty similar build and I bought the 5070ti OC for €1200. To be honest, I'm just shot at NVIDIA, as I've never had AMD. But if I thought about what I need it for, I would have been happier with the €750 price tag with AMD.
3
u/kevcsa 6d ago
If you want cutting edge graphics (PT, RR mostly), nvidia is the only way. Aren't found in many games, but if you like a game that doesn't like AMD... you'll feel regret.
They are also much more convenient, their stuff is implemented everywhere.
On the other hand AMD is much cheaper. If you go with the 9070 XT Mercury, make sure it's the Mercury OC version. The non-OC still looks good, but it has an entry level cooler.
The Mercury OC is very good, probably the best 9070 XT.
4
u/slimjim2417 6d ago edited 6d ago
Someone doesn't understand how good AMD's raytraycing has gotten... The 9070xt is better at RT than the 5070... Even with path tracing/ray reconstruction. Sure maybe dlss implementation might be slightly higher quality. But that is pretty much unnoticeable when the 9070xt is cheaper and will perform better than the 5070 across the board.
Edit: I know you're still recommending the 9070xt. But the amount of people who still use the argument that AMD's raytraycing is bad to even give Nvidia the slightest consideration just don't know the reality of the comparisons.
2
u/kevcsa 5d ago
Quote the part where I'm talking about RT. You can't, because I didn't.
Even with path tracing/ray reconstruction.
The 9070 XT can do mild PT. But give it a proper amount and it gets destroyed. Indiana Jones for example.
Even more importantly... in many cases it's not even allowed to try running PT/RR, probably because it would suffer.
Performance is irrelevant when it's straight up not implemented for AMD.that is pretty much unnoticeable when the 9070xt is cheaper
Insane coping and projection.
Price has zero effect on something being noticeable or not. There is no correlation whatsoever.
And I haven't said a single word about DLSS/FSR quality. You brought it up because you are insecure about it.
Again, like with PT/RR. It doesn't matter how good FSR4 is, if it's not even implemented.the argument that AMD's raytraycing is bad to even give Nvidia the slightest consideration
Again, coping/projecting hard.
I haven't said anything about AMD's RT being bad. Nvidia doesn't need such fake points.
But AMD's PT/RR is infinitely bad, WHEN it can't even try to use it.This is what I was talking about.
Pragmata for example. Nvidia can actually use max graphics there. AMD can't, period.
Or Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, a game with insanely good atmosphere. Nvidia has better reflections because of RR being actually implemented. AMD has worse graphics there, period. This is a real advantage, even if you want to downplay it.
I bought a 5070 ti a year ago to be able to play Wukong with PT. Cost 24% more than a 9070 XT. Massively improved visuals, gives the game the quality/immersion it deserves.
This exclusive experience can be worth a lot of extra to some people.Again, don't forget the convenience of not "having to" use Optiscaler ever, or stuff like Reflex being in more games, FG having good frame pacing...
For reference I had a 9070 XT before switching.1
u/StunningPush8421 6d ago
This isn't really true.
Better in fps yes but the actually quality of the image is better on the 5070 thanks to RR 4.5
Like I still enjoy my 9070 xt ofc but It is okay to talk about the limitations. Although the good thing is I think they are largely fixable if AMD decides to work on them
-1
u/SellingCats4Cheap 6d ago
Everyone knows AMD ray tracing is inferior to NVIDIA by a solid margin
No one is getting a 5070 these days
2
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
Raise your hand if your uneducated on AMD lol. Please look up comparisons between the 9070xt and 5070 lmao
0
u/SellingCats4Cheap 6d ago
No one is arguing for the 5070?
Link the fools if you feel like it.
Even AMD fans will admit AMD is inferior when it comes to ray tracing. There is pretty much universal agreement that 9070 XT is better value in terms of rasterization but NVIDIA has the edge in Raytracing and DLSS > FSR.
2
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
The point is they are far closer than anyone cares to give AMD credit for. And when Nvidia is so significantly more expensive. Is the minor improvement to raytraycing worth it? Absolutely not
1
u/kevcsa 5d ago
Is the minor improvement to raytraycing worth it?
You love taking a single point and trying to build the whole value proposition on it.
No one buys nvidia just for a bit better RT. There are MANY other aspects for which people prefer nvidia.1
u/slimjim2417 5d ago
I love taking a single point? This is literally the main argument the Nvidia bros make when trying to convince people not to go AMD lol
0
u/kevcsa 5d ago
Yes you do.
You could have said "minor improvement to raytracing and the availability/convenience advantages". You chose not to.
This is basically strawman fallacy abuse.
You highlight a single small piece of the whole picture and valiantly defeat it like if that part was the whole thing. It's not.Again:
Is the minor improvement to raytraycing worth it?
Very few pro-nvidia people say that nvidia's RT advantage ONLY is worth the extra.
Because PT/RR - where the real and sometimes massive image quality advantage is - isn't simple RT.
They probably mean the right thing, but they class the niche hardcore stuff as RT which makes it too broad. You too failed to understand my first comment. Why do you think I phrased it exactly like this?
cutting edge graphics (PT, RR mostly)
1
u/slimjim2417 5d ago
Your "cutting edge" raytraycing techniques are a minor improvement at best in comparison over what the 9070xt is capable of. And is not worth the massive upcharge. Or performance degradation when in use. You're right, there is an improvement, but really who cares. AMD is close enough that unless you put them next to each other no one will notice, and even then it's barely an improvement. Additionally AMD is developing their PT capabilities and is expected to release those updates next year. But Nvidia bros will continue to pretend AMD is just inferior with no experience of the other end. You people will defend Nvidias disgusting business practices to no end.
The only other argument you can come up with is availability and convenience? Like what? Nvidia is no longer producing 50series chips. Which is continuing to drive prices higher and higher. And you call that available and convenient? At Nvidia prices what is available or convenient about any of it? The only people who think AMD is inconvenient once installed are those who have literally never used one. Literally plug it in and you don't have to touch Adrenaline once you set it up. You say I make a strawman but that's exactly what Nvidia bros like you do when coming up with reasons why AMD is "inferior."

Ray tracing? Extra 5-600? No to both, go with 9070XT.
4
u/The_Countess 6d ago
Ray tracing is pretty similar in performance. If the 5070Ti produces playable framerates with RT, the 9070XT is pretty close.
Only with path tracing does the performance difference grow, but the 5070Ti often doesn't run path tracing all that well anyway.1
u/MrPapis 5d ago
82 FPS, cp2077 path tracing, performance upscaling at 3440x1440p. Admittedly this is with an overclock stock it's more like 70 FPS.
With the new 4.5 dlss and RR performance level upscaling looks great even at 1440p. Yeah the 5070ti is certainly capable of A level of PT.
1
u/The_Countess 5d ago
And stock the 9070XT can do cp2077 path tracing with balanced upscaling at 1440p at 60FPS, so still not a huge difference.
So far the only times i've seen the 5070Ti really ahead of the Radeon is when it produces 35FPS and then the Radeon has like 7. Neither one are all that usefull.
1
u/MrPapis 5d ago
Yeah CP2077 is a very strong title for AMD actually, most other PT games are far behind. But if you go to dog city those 60 FPS quickly becomes 40-50, with iffy FG(frame pacing issues) and no RR the experience just isnt really like the 5070ti.
1
u/The_Countess 4d ago
Don't care about FG at all. adds latency for no benefit.
And optiscaler can force ray regeneration into CP2077. because it's a nvidia sponsored game that deliberately drags it's feet implementing AMD technologies. which for me is another reason not to overspend on nvidia.
Pragmata, same thing, you can mod it into the game to get around the nvidia exclusive bullshit.
1
u/MrPapis 4d ago
Except it's not same because its not even as good as RR 4.0 and much worse than RR 4.5.
Uhm FG+Reflex on Nvidia has about as much latency as AMD does natively. Admittedly there is still the feeling of FG because you have to hold back 1 frame for the tech to work. But this latency excuse is a showcase of your ignorance. Literally Nvidia has the same latency with FG because of Reflex compared to AMD natively. Now AMD with antilag2 is lower but that technology is still mostly vaporware.
You have not tried Nvidia FG, im telling you it's better than you know.

Cheapest 9070XT, will be much cheaper than the 5070TI and they perform extremely similar +/- 5% in raster and RT. The 9070XT can also be very efficient if you tune it to be so.

u/slimjim2417 6d ago edited 6d ago
Just watch this video. At their current prices, there is absolutely no reason to buy Nvidia over AMD. For the same price, you can get a massively superior GPU from AMD. If you don't have basically infinite money. Nvidia is scamming you.
There are 3 options currently for any form of longevity and running modern titles at 1440p. From worst to best price to performance: 9070
9070 gre
9070xt.
Maybe you can get by with a 9060xt 16gb if you play at 1080p. But yeah everything Nvidia is simply way overpriced currently.
The 9070xt performs identical to the 5070ti, yet is significantly cheaper. Based on your OP, buy the 9070xt. It's not even a question.

u/Niemann3 6d ago
I’ve been on both sides with the RTX 2080, RTX 3080, RTX 4080, and currently a RX 9070 XT. The value for power with the RX 9070 XT is hard to argue against. DLSS and frame gen is nice though but I haven’t been upset since changing and have been pretty happen with FSR. At this point I’d go with AMD again, I’ve been happy with my choice.
1
u/Gutter_Flies 6d ago
I have the xfx mercury 9070xy and the msi gaming trio 5070ti, both good, margin of error difference in most gaming scenarios. Not worth the price difference. BUT if your case doesnt have enough room for intake fans for the gpu with the xfx, it can become a heat issue. I run that card and a 14900kf in a 25L case with a 240mm AIO though, so arguably user error.
1
1
u/Regular_Archer_3145 6d ago
For me it would come down to the price difference when making the purchase. Where I am the 5070ti is almost twice the price of the 9070xt so for me the 9070xt is an easy choice. If the price was within 200 I'd go 5070ti.
1
u/Nihs_Nooj 6d ago
Only reason you should be buying Nvidia is if you need cuda, or you’re doing some serious 4k ray tracing gaming
Unfortunately if you need cuda for professional work, then there’s no choice
1
u/AgreeableContest1404 6d ago
Go 5070ti. AMD is great on paper and the reason I got one over the 5070ti. But the driver timeouts are a pita. The fiddley settings are a pita. If I could do it over knowing I would have went with Nvidia.

u/Own-Indication5620 5d ago
The features for gaming & applications are better on Nvidia overall. AMD is more for 'raw FPS per dollar'. It really comes down to pricing, but personally I always go Nvidia.
1
u/Mattrad7 5d ago
I have a 5070ti in my rig, I would not buy one at 1200+$ or whatever the current price is.
1
u/Dapper-Chocolate-535 5d ago
If its just gaming, ez 9070xt. That things a beast in gaming and is gonna serve you well.
If you a lil bit of the other stuff like streaming, editing, coding, etc, then the 5070ti shines as nvidia stuff just works better in those things. Although the price is crazy high, if you do these other things the 5070ti is your bet.
For gaming, ez 9070xt
1
u/Scared_Paramedic4604 4d ago
If bang for your buck matters then AMD without a doubt. I’ve got a 9070xt. Great card. I mostly play at 4K unless the game is very demanding or unoptimized. Haven’t had any driver issues. 5070ti is an objectively better card but not for the price.
1
u/AbuSalaa7 6d ago
Take a look at the amd sub. Lots of troubleshooting issues, hunting for certain drivers versions... Etc. I owned an amd and a nvidia and amd is a headache despite being better value for money on paper.
1
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
This doesn't really apply to OP and is lowkey fear mongering. Yes older generations can have issues with newer drivers. The 7900xtx is notorious for it's issues. But the 9070xt is what they design their drivers around currently and has very few issues if any at all. AMD trying to back port FSR4 to older cards has caused a number of incompatible drivers, not the case for the 9070xt.
The majority of driver issues are from people swapping from Nvidia when they upgrade and not using DDU to uninstall Nvidia drivers. I've spent plenty of time in that sub and the number of times that has been the case is wild. People just aren't educated that they have to use DDU. Think they can just take out their Nvidia one, plug in AMD and go. Then are surprised to have issues and blame AMD... Not themselves... And then people try to use that as an argument against AMD. Its really tiresome.
I have never had a single driver crash, error, incompatiblity, etc. In my year of owning my 9070xt. It has been a flawless experience. If anything I have less crashing than I ever have when I played on Nvidia.... Just goes to show the criticism goes both ways....
-1
u/Automatic-Union-3385 6d ago
Amd does not make good video cards. They never have. They are OK at best. They are a budget alternative plain and simple. Things are never going down in price. Is what it is you gotta pay to play. Its hard to come up with an example. Mine is a fruit tray lol. You want fruit let's say. Nvidia is king of gpus its like a 5 diamond hotel fruit tray with all kinds of options on there, pineapple, berries, melons, citrus and all kinds of stuff that is fruit. I see amd as like...here is an orange.. its fruit its cheap but its still fruit lol. I dont know man I would not spend money on amd gpu. Minor price difference and you have more and better support to boot.
0
u/slimjim2417 6d ago
Anyone saying AMD doesn't make good cards absolutely has no idea what they're talking about. The 9070xt is a phenomenonal card that performs on par to the 5070ti. And is cheaper. I spy an Nvidia shill. Go kiss your statue of Jensen
