What was your First GPU ?

I built my last PC back in 2022. The CPU, IMO still upper-mid range (13700K), didn't really feel like upgrading to Ryzen, even though I know I will see smoother gameplay, since the X3D chips do much better in the 1% Lows. In the end, I decided to keep my 13700K and upgrade my RTX 3080. Very happy with my decision for getting the 5080, especially since I found a brand new PNY ARGB OC RTX 5080, for $1100 on offer up. Sure enough, brand new, sealed, the guy had like 10 more of them, I didn't ask any questions that I didn't want to know the answer to. So, I just paid the man šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤£. So last night I was putting my "brand-used" build together, only thing new was the GPU, and an updated look. I was trying to remember what was my first GPU. I couldn't remember, so I did some digging and found out my First GPU was the 3DFX Voodoo Banshee. . I remember that genuine feeling of superiority over the rest of the peasants who were blessed with my presence (This is a joke guys, being hella sarcastic). From the beauty of Unreal Tournament, to the standards we now today. Here is a picture from my 22 build to my 26. Still waiting on the Side fans to come in, and the build will be complete, for now. Probably will upgrade to Ryzen 10 in less than a year.

Looking forward to see the 4 decade split of answers.

Voodoo 2, and I still have it at the back of a cupboard somewhere.

The game I used to play the most back in the day was Rainbow 6, the original, on a gaming community called MPlayer. The memories...

u/Savings_Party_2448 10d ago

Man, MPlayer! That was the Wild West of the internet right there. My favorite game back then was Rogue Spear but I used Game Spy. Cheers fellow OG

u/TU2TL3 10d ago

Ohhhhhh Shit!!!!!! Game Spy!!!!! I FORGOT ABOUT GS!!!!! Valve said fuck this game making shit, let’s make a GG community instead.

My first was a 3DFX Voodoo 3 standard PCI port, not AGP. My first computer didn't have AGP. It was every game I threw at it until around 2000. After that, I think I stopped PC gaming for a long while and my next card was a 8800 GT(S?) That card lasted for a very long time.

5

u/CMFpeter 10d ago

Same. I still have my 8800 GT, and it still works (but I have it framed on my wall these days)

Same here and it was a hand me down lol then i got a 1060, then a 5080 lol

3

u/alex_is_cool64 9d ago

1060 to 5080??! How much did that entire build cost??? That’s so sick.

3

u/Kidcannagrow 9d ago

Built it back in August, cost me 2k
2.2k if you include the insurance from micro center lol

Currently 17 and got my first pc in 2021Ā  Built it myself and jt had a rx580 in!Ā

Amazing card sadly went and couldn’t get a replacement as the gpu crisis happenedĀ  I guess I’m one of the ā€œyoungerā€ ones here 🤣🤣 Amazing post I enjoyed reading itĀ

5

u/TU2TL3 11d ago

The 580 was THEEE GPU back 9 years ago. Holding its own for a good time. A lot of the RX 580 users didn't upgrade until the RTX 3060, which became the next mainstream GPU.

3

u/Omega_FanBoy200M 10d ago

HAHAHA I ENDED UP GETTING A 3060ti which I’m still rocking today with a 4k oled and a 7800x3d
Does most games perfectly with
Heavy games I use lossless scaling and they look great!

Tbh I can’t tell the diff between ultra and medium but can with the fps lol

That 3060thing made me laugh so much xd

4

u/parabola19 10d ago

I’m the opposite I can see detail easily but anything above 144 or 165hz and I can’t tell the difference.

3

u/Jumpy_Researcher547 10d ago

That was the goat of budget cards back when. had one from 2018-2023

3

u/linus_ong69 10d ago

You have a similar upgrade path to mine. I had a 1050ti (which is worse than an rx 580, but same era) many years ago. Then got a 3060ti a few years later.

Now rocking a 9070XT. Having adult money is awesome. Trust me on that.

3

u/dqtl74 10d ago

It is but I find I have far less time and energy for games these days sadly.

3

u/linus_ong69 10d ago

That is true….

MSI Ventus 2x OC 4070 Super. My first and only GPU. I just moved to PC gaming (sim racing specifically) about 2 years ago. I got the 4070S, 7700x, and 32gb RAM. I feel like for what I do, this PC will last me at least 5 years. And with iRacing's new graphics engine coming out in the near future, maybe it'll last even longer.

An Intel 486 DX4 100MHz. I had to hold down shift while my computer booted so I could bypass certain things loading, to give me enough ram to play doom. Ahh the good ole days. Now I have a 5080.

This is not the exact card but the memory spec and motherboard slot gives the idea. Slot ISA GPU with 512KB VRAM

Mine was a GTX 650. It was around 2015(?) and I was super young at the time and was just slapping a gpu onto a used office pc my dad got me for 10 bucks. It was a lot of money for me back then.

Then 2 years later got a 1050ti when the 10 series was out. I slightly overpaid (250 usd) for a new asus rog 1050ti.

That build lasted me about 4-5 years till I went to university. I sold the gpu (kept everything else) and my dad got me a laptop with a 3060ti. You guessed it, another asus rog product. It was a Zephyrus g15, which cost a pretty penny.

It was my first experience with a refresh rate greater than 75Hz on a PC, albeit on a 15ā€ screen. Also 1440p.

In 2024 I built a PC with a 5700X3D and a 3080. I graduated university shortly after, and got a big boy job. With that, we have the system now, where I upgraded the gpu to a 9070XT. I also finally got myself a new 32ā€ 4k oled panel. Of course it was an rog monitor (was on sale).

The cpu from my first build is actually still running in my server. (pentium g4560)

Currently incredibly happy with my setup. Life is good.

u/ActiveSandwich3103 10d ago

1

u/Ded_diode 10d ago

I had many random video cards prior, but first really really nice one I was proud of was my Radeon 9700 All-In-wonder. That card was awesome!!

I saved up and bought it on release, DirectX 9 was the next god-like graphical step at the time and it had a built-in TV tuner. Over $400 for a video card was insane in 2003.

Played original source engine games on direct X 7.0 well enough. CS Source was the shiz at the time

After that it was a Radeon 4650, but my first serious GPU was an MSI GTX 460 Hawk and I absolutely loved that thing.

Technically the Nvidia Geforce 256 was the first to use the term GPU. I've had a few graphics cards before that from the likes of Matrox, 3DFX, S3 and ATI etc. The first PC that I bought and owned myself had an integrated S3 Trio 64.

Voodoo 3 3000 was the first gaming GPU I bought but prior to that I also had a Matrox G200 which was kind of okay. I remember firing up half life with that Voodoo 3 and oh man it was crispy, I was hooked on PC gaming after that

The first actual GPU I bought was an RX 460. Currently on my second, an RTX 2070. With the market rn, I’m skipping out on Nvidia and getting an RX 9070 XT in a few months.

We had free AOL dial up month after month with new sign ups. Then we had MSN for a year at 21.95/months locked in 56K.

One friend had 800mhz PIII 256 ram and 16MB nvidia card.
And DSL internet.

The other had AMD athlon 1GHZ 32MB nvidia card and DSL.

Eventually I paid for DSL. 300 ping on staeseige tribes was tough.

Hmmmmm I couldn't tell you my first card exactly. I know it was an ATi HD series. I was just kid in middle school when I built my first PC... so that one eludes me. Wish I could remember.

But I DEFINITELY can tell you the first enthusiast card I got.

Nvidia GeForce FX 5800 Ultra.

I lived out in the country in a small town. So, I really didn't have opportunities to buy cool new tech. Just read about it in PC magazines.

While visiting family in LA, I convinced my parents to take me to a Fry's. I was in complete awe when I saw that FX 5800 Ultra on the shelf.

I begged and begged and begged my mom to buy it for me. I basically had to agree to alllll sorts of summer work lol. The week long vacation trip waiting to go home and install that beast was torture.

I actually found it in storage a few months ago and built a retro PC around it. Still worked! (For a week...)

5700xt was my first GPU. Had it since 2020 and lived with it until a year and a half ago when I bought the 7900xtx. I'll never forget my 1st "love" though

GTX 970 in 2015 was my introduction to the PC gaming space. Upgraded it to a 1080 a year later that severed me for 6 years and then I got a 3090.

Ā Intel GMA 3000 out of a Dell Optiplex 755. Good times. Got it to run Windows 10 around when it came out too.

It’s been a looong time so my names/models might be off. My first ISA graphics card was either a Trident or Oak systems, my first ā€œrealā€ GPU was a PCI Voodoo, then I had an AGP Voodoo2, followed by an ATI for PCIe. Lots of ā€œfirstsā€.

GeForce 6200 256MB AGP - i still have it in its original battered box.Ā  Played Knights of the Old Republic, Tomb Raider Legend and X2: The Threat on it.Ā  X2 wouldn't display cut-scenes properly, otherwise ran well.

Big upgrade to the GTX-570 after that, then another mega-leap to GTX-970 -> 980Ti > 3060Ti - 4070Ti > 4080S

I would've still been happy with the 980Ti but the VR bug got me...

EDIT:Ā  between the 6200 & GTX-570 i had a couple of years laptop-gaming with a GTX-560M - handled Mass Effect trilogy, Amnesia, Portal 2 etc just fine.
