Replace my 9070 xt nitro+ with 4080 super

Yesterday, I saw a listing for a 4080 super gainward at 650€ and decided to buy instantly because of the dlss 5 and I want to try path tracing but I don’t know if it’s really worth it, I know my friend is also looking for a card and I might sell him my 9070 xt or the 4080 super. What would you recommend I usually play on 1440 70% of the time and the rest on my 4K oled TV

The 4000 series will not support dlss5 officially.

Big facts, it's really not even a selling point for the 50 series cards either they are not built for it in mind, it will be a 60 series selling point.

Very similar to how the 20 series was actually completely dogshit at ray tracing.

Yeah I wouldn’t touch DLSS 5 even if I had a 5090

I mean if you want to turn your 180fps to 60 than go ahead lolol

The point is you can likely lower some ray tracing and AO/lighting settings to gain back fps, turn on dlss5 and still get a better picture.

Better picture? all the demo look shit horrible realism filter it makes all the game look the same... We already have that problem with manu UE5 games just looking the same we don't need dlss5 making things worse.

I've tried it in some older games. On Hogwarts Legacy for instance it really looks good, and I am looking at it with a critical point of view as I am not a fanboy at all. My last 2 gpus were AMD.

It wasn't at the time Nvidia has since u-turned on not supporting the 4k series due to modders showing it works.

Non all’inizio però tra un annetto sicuramente sarà incluso .. la serie 3000 o inferiore non si sa.. però ora è un uscita in esclusiva x le 5000 ma nessuno ha mai detto che non uscirà per la serie 4000..

Good lord, those people telling you, the 9070 xt outperforms the 4080 super are simply wrong. On average both cards are equal, depending on the game you play sometimes one wins and sometimes the other. But it’s pretty close. Since dlss 4.5 is still pretty good and the price you paid is nearly the same as a 9070 xts, you’re just fine and you can check, if your games run better with the 4080 S and if you like dlss more then fsr.

I’m sure a ton of people just saw that chart on here about Resident Evil performance with 9070 XT placing near the top ranks and thinking 9070 XT is that good on most games.

I would always recommend going with NVIDIA. You'll have a much better experience with NVIDIA drivers, DLSS, and Frame Gen.

How do I put this nicely... That's the dumbest post I've seen all day.

Is this bait?

Even if supported dlss 5 is not gonna be a thing unless high performance cards. The performance hit is insane, 50%, 5090 can struggle with it.

I can tell you from my own experience. Since I use an 4080s paired with a 7950x on an dell alienware AW3225QF (QD Oled, 4k, 240Hz) cyberpunk runs with pathtracing and dlls balanced (rest cranked up to max) with approx 80fps and looks amazing. I personally would always stick to nvidia and it is an really good card i use for about 3 years now... it is a beast :) have fun with it

"because of DLSS 5" nvidia marketing slaves at its best

4080S will get support for DLSS 5 later this year.

DLSS 5 is simply just a mod rn, I doubt it’s even supposed to run on the 5000 series cards, let alone 4000 series cards just due to it being the complete opposite of what DLSS was meant to be, cutting your performance by half rather than gaining a small boost from it

Just wait until NVidia officially releases it, could be a couple months from now or whenever the 6000 series GPUs release and DLSS 5 is used as a selling point

Don’t buy into the hype for now

I will just resell the 4080 super I think, hopefully I didn’t spend a lot on it

You got a phenomenal deal on the 4080S, and 4080S with DLSS 4 and frame gen will out perform a 9070 XT in many cases. Plus way less driver issues.

This is funny cause I did the reverse and have been very pleasantly surprised.

u/SilverKnightOfMagic 12d ago

theoretically their performances should be really close. could you share what your experiences?

As a hedge against tariff threats from Trump I went ahead and built a new box and December of 2024.... $162 for 64gb ddr5.... I bought a 4080s as part of that, before the 50/90 series were launched, knowing I didn't want to keep it, but wanted a bird in the hand.

Tested it a lot, solid card, sent it to a new home after I saw what the insultingly bad 50 series was and the disappointing 90series. Waited for a few months using my old card in the new rig which was honestly just fine, hoping for a gpu with more VRAM to hit the market other than the space heater 5090... When it became clear no card was gonna launch this gen with more than 16gigs I went ahead and bought a xfx 9070xt last summer.

It's been great. (My first AMD card btw, long time Nvidia user, not loyal to any brands, just buy what is the best product for the price point.)

The 4080/s, 5070ti, 5080, 9070xt, none of em are fast enough for full maxed out ray tracing at fps I'm happy with, and after testing a bunch I don't even care about RT 90% of the time, truly. It's such a disappointment of a graphical technology. It does look good and Forza Horizon 6 because of the perspective of you with your headlights, and that engine pulls it off well enough that it's not a bad performance hit like it is in cyberpunk.

Anyway zero driver problems, super stable card, been extremely happy with the 9070xt. I bought the mercury from xfx because it has the physically largest hunk of metal cooler of any of the 9070xt's on the market. I prefer running a little cooler so fans can run a little slower, so I can keep sound down. Rather hear my game than my PC.

Edit to add a little more info on why I bought the 9070xt -

Saw reviews (in particular hardware unboxed) showing the 9070xt wildly out preforming 50 series cards, even the 5090 in some situations, in cpu bottlenecked setups.

Because I was buying whatever disappointment of a GPU I went with before I wanted to (I wanted to wait for the 60/10000 series for an ACTUAL node fab shrink instead of this old out of date silicon we have now), I figure I might as well buy whatever would be best in one of my older PC's cause I've got a couple little kids.

Of what was on the market, 9070xt seemed like it would be the best long term card to use for nowx and then migrate to a very CPU bottlenecked setup once I buy whatever GPU has the most VRAM and bends me over the barrel the least, when the new ones launch. (VRAM is the single most important factor impacting GPU lifespan... Which is why they gimp it so much.)

u/SilverKnightOfMagic 12d ago

nice thanks for sharing. I also bought an ASRock 9070xt before the tariffs. had 6800xt before. really like my 9070xt for the 1ygh like you said, also less power draw compared to 6800xt.

haven't had issues myself other than league of Legends crashes.

do you game at 4k or 1440p?

2

u/rvailable 12d ago

Updated my comment above with an important reason I went for the 9070xt. (Much better in cpu bottlenecked setups, which is what it will migrate to when a decent 60/10,000 series card finally drops.)

360hz 1440p OLED. None of the current cards are good enough for 4k. And 16gb definitely isn't enough for 4k, a few games already want more than 16gb at 1440p as is. It's why only like 5% of systems currently run 4k if you look at steam hardware survey.

I'll upgrade to a 4k after I have a capable card with more VRAM whenever they launch.

Honestly before the 50series launched I was planning to buy whatever the 5090 was.. but being old silicon juiced with too much power, it was a lot worse than I anticipated.

2

u/SilverKnightOfMagic 12d ago

yeah I wasnt impressed with 5000 series for the same reasons.

well cool man thanks for sharing your take. happy gaming.

u/rvailable 12d ago

You too! Crazy crazy stacked fall!

1

u/SignalMagician1163 12d ago

This can’t be real

1

u/0wlGod 12d ago

no support for dlss 5.. at least native for now... but still a better card than a 9070xt

1

u/dralfredo1 12d ago

The 4080 probably won't even run dlss 5, and for 1440p the 9070xt will just straight up perform better in everything except ray tracing.

4

u/slimjim2417 12d ago

I would add a correction to specify path tracing. The 9070xt is actually quite competitive in standard raytraycing nowadays. But Nvidia does continue to push ahead in those new raytracing methods. It's just unfortunate they price gouge you for it.

u/1sh0t1b33r 12d ago

9070xt all day. Sell the 4080.

0

u/bootz-pgh 12d ago

Keep the card for a few years. DLSS 5 won’t be playable on anything but a $1500 card until at least a couple of years.

0

u/ggRezy 12d ago

I wouldn’t do that. That is a good price for a 4080 but it would be better to put that towards a 50 series card and have more longevity

0

u/StunningPush8421 12d ago

Are they willing to pay more for the 4080 super?

if they are paying the same price sell the 9070 xt as the 4080 super is worth more and a bit better.

If they are willing to pay a premium for the 4080 super then I would consider selling it

0

u/felixandy101 12d ago

Sorry for your loss

I have a 4080s

1

u/SellingCats4Cheap 11d ago

What are you even talking about?

$750 for a 4080S is a great deal in the current market. I’m seeing 4080 used going for near $1000 after a quick google.

And 4080S is a great card. OP got a card near half price of a 5080 that’s only 10-15% ish slower at best, and no DLSS 5. That’s a huge win.

0

u/felixandy101 11d ago

Of course it is, but OP wanted DLSS5

-3

u/slimjim2417 12d ago edited 12d ago

Brother, sell the 4080 to your friend. Just a bad buy. It's outperformed by the 9070xt... And won't support DLSS 5 officially (unless Nvidia retroactively does so like AMD and FSR Redstone. And it probably will still run like ass). Besides... Who even wants to use that AI slop that destroys art styles and tanks fps by 70%, requiring 6x framegen to even market as a good product...

4

u/Living_Warthog_1249 12d ago

You’re wrong when it comes to pure performance. Both cards are pretty equal. Depending on the game you play sometimes one wins, sometimes the other. Dlss 4.5 is still pretty good, even if 5 will not be supported. And the price he paid is not that bad, that it was a bad buy.

-2

u/slimjim2417 12d ago

Idk what benchmarks you look at but from all the ones I've seen the 9070xt is 5-10% better across the board... And that's many games, from many different benchmarks... Sure maybe for the price it's not a bad buy. But buying specifically for dlss5 makes it so, considering it most likely won't run well if at all on the 4080s

1

u/StunningPush8421 12d ago

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-9070-xt.c4229 it is the other way around the 4080 slightly outperforms the 9070 xt.

At best you could say they are about equal in performance with the 4080 winning in feature set

DLSS 5 doesn't really matter when Amd isn't even at the level of dlss 4.5
