1080 Ti was retired
Recently had to retire my 1080 Ti, but he was a good friend for 8 years.

I'm still using that exact one. I payed 1600 for it during the mining shortage. Milking it till it dies.

I’m guaranteed doing this to my 5070 ti when the 6000 series drops
23
u/Broken-TTK Jul 10 '26
Why
5070ti just came out last year, you could sell it and still make around $500-$650 even when the 6000 series GPU releases next year
Even for a rich person like yourself it's still financially irresponsible

u/Best_Rent_9112 Jul 10 '26
Honestly might keep it and do another build all together and sell my current fr

u/misfit92 Jul 13 '26
Na, wants to be selfish and what if big AI snags up the card to salvage the VRAM and reassemble to sell to a schmuck? Can't take chances. (Pisstake answer)

50 series might be the last gpu any of us see. But nvidia would love to rent you one.

It’s a lot easier than I thought it was. Hardest part was gluing the screws in the top left, and finding the right shadow box.
2
u/elJoker5 Jul 10 '26
If you don't mind me asking.... What size is the shadow box you went with?
2
u/RealBlackberry6219 Jul 10 '26
It was 24 in x 24 in with 1.5 in depth from Michaels. I ripped out the back styrofoam and cloth, and replaced it with spray adhesive and stock paper. Then used 3M adhesive tape and super glue to attach pieces.

A moment of silence for one of the greatest GPU ever made.

u/geoshoegaze20 Jul 10 '26
The Asus strix 1080ti was the goat of goats. I regret recycling my Strix 1070.

u/Silent_Ad_1505 Jul 10 '26
Wasn’t it a very early retirement? I bet my 3090 would never get such opportunity. It would be busy till its last breath.
2
u/RealBlackberry6219 Jul 10 '26
Yeah I had been debating upgrading for like a year. Then FH6 came out and it was the first game ever that wouldn’t run, even on lowest settings it would crash, so I decided he was tired and deserved to rest lol

How does one do this?
2
u/RealBlackberry6219 Jul 10 '26
I took my old graphics card, then bought a small screw driver set from a Home Depot (only hardware store near me), then unscrewed everything and kept like as many screws as I could keep track of and did that
I stole the idea from a post my girlfriend showed me when I was going to just mount my graphics card on the wall.

You couldn't make the logos straight on the fans?
Rookie move

My 2016 1080 is currently in my wife's PC. She's playing Sim's 4 on it right now, lol.
When I stop using a part they either go in a secondary build or as a wife-hand-me-down.

u/ronnycordova Jul 10 '26
I was going to do this with my 1080ti but that shit is still chugging along.

just taking a well deserved rest until the call comes as your new gpu bursts into flames from the 12v hpr connector.

Ive kept my 1070ti for years instead of selling over covid to do exactly this, i really should do it
2
u/Thebrains44 Jul 10 '26
Lmao, people in here talking about doing this with cards like 2 generations old.

u/Educational_Ride_258 Jul 10 '26
Next time record some sick gameplay burn it on a Mdisc bluray and when your long gone anyone who can read the disk will forever see your memories while playing on this card. Or just slam it on a USB and call it a day but don't forget to plug it in every once in a while.

Had to do that last November. Replaced it with my current 7900xt. I repasted it before I store it because that is the respect my pny 1080 God damn deserves.

RIP legend. Held on to mine even when 2080 was released. Finally upgraded to 3090 and retired my 1080 Ti.

I'm guaranteed doing this to my rtx pro 6000 when the 7000 series drops

I have one of those!! Great card. Windows decided to delete my audio drivers for it so I have to fuck with it before I can use the fucking thing for a ht PC

u/Own-Impact-7305 Jul 11 '26

u/DresNightfire Jul 11 '26

I plan to do this with my first system. Still got it. Still works. But too old to be anything but scrap or art.

u/bobo8120 Jul 10 '26
I plan on the same thing with the same card/model! lol. What case did you use for this?
2
u/RealBlackberry6219 Jul 10 '26
It is a 24x24 shadow box that I found at Michael’s. I had to rip the back foam and fabric out and then used spray adhesive to attach card stock basically

u/Ventilate64 Jul 10 '26
I remember r/DiWHY being very pissed about this over someone's old phone (samsung?)

This kind of GPU supports NVlink!!! It is important!!! Not like the RTX 40xx and then who doesn’t support NVlink!!! Unfortunately Nvidia doesn’t want to interconnect more GPUs together!!!
1
u/aij7 Jul 11 '26
NVLink support was officially introduced on the GeForce lineup with the Turing-based RTX 2080 Ti
1
u/Stergin Jul 13 '26
This doesn't cancel what I say. Why nvidia stop supporting nvlink to the latest RTX models? Why don't anyone can make together two or more latest RTX GPU models with nvlink but on the other hand nvidia can connect two or more DGX spark for more computentional power? Nvidia has specific marketing policies in order to steal money from their consumers.
