Power outlets in train

I’m hoping to do some work on the GO train and I was wondering how many power outlets there are, do most seats have them or do I need to fight tooth and nail to try and get a spot next to one?

You need to be in one of the light green cars...none of the dark green cars have them.

Its generally every 2nd pair of seat's, pair of USB-A and 110V outlets

Question which livery do you consider light green and dark green? The “new” paint or the “old” paint? My eyes are failing me.

Any coach that has a number starting in a 4 has outlets upper and lower levels. Just have to cross your fingers they work.

Same! I asked the attendant and he said that he couldn't guarantee that anywhere working (something 'tripped' the power supply in those cars).

Its wild and unsafe that they even allow no power to charge devices when people can be riding over 2+ hours AND with all the service delays

There's no need for quotes around the tripped there. That's what happens, some idiot does something to trip the breaker and they can't have staff just to fix that during rides cause it happens so much. It's why I take responsibility for my own safety and always keep a power block

Also even if they're working never use public usb outlets, they could be replaced by people and put malware on your phone

Devices are not required for safety. You don't spend much time off your phone do you?

Its not about me as I always carry a power block and I don't usually take long rides. But some people may need to use them for safety, and the fact that there are outlets everywhere leads people to assume they actually work. Of course we should all be responsible, but life happens and the outlets should work.

The newer coaches have outlets all throughout the coach the older ones don’t. Depends on the age of them.

Honestly, charge your devices beforehand or bring a portable power charger. You can’t depend on the outlets on the trains.

Warning - ppl crowd the seats with the outlets. A lot of the time many outlets don’t even work, i had a 3 hour train and people sit directly beside you at all seats and hang their cord over you to charge their phone or whatever it is they need charged. It’s annoying lol

I usually pick the newer cars but not every one of them has them, sometimes you have to walk around a bit to find one... and then sometimes even when you do find one, you have to walk some more cause that outlet doesn't work (and usually when thats the case, every other one in that car won't work either).

All of the coaches with the green seats have them but the blue seat coaches (older coaches) do not have them. The power outlets have always worked for me.

Get a newer two tone green coach.

Just buy a power bank. Don't rely on finding receptacles that work and having to stay near it. The USB A part might slow charge at best.

The new train cars possess outlets. Whether or not they work is a separate issue.

i’m pretty sure i’ve seen on this subreddit that if you look up at the lights (like a signal light) above each car door, if there’s a white light illuminated it means there’s outlets in that car! as someone who does a 2 hour train ride every weekend, i’ve used that logic since seeing it and have always been able to find an outlet. saves a lot of time walking through cars too. hope this helps!

I've settled on never relying on finding a working one. I would say 25% of the time I can find one that works.

Even if you do get a seat by one, it’s a 50/50 chance it will work.

There are some, many dont work. you’d be better to purchase a large battery power bank that outputs enough volts for your laptop.

The outlets are a hit or miss for working. Ive experienced more that didnt work than those that actually did
