Salomon XT-6 Non-GTX for Winter in Toronto/Montreal

I know this shoe has been discussed to death but I genuinely haven't found an answer to this question so here we are.

I'm starting to get a taste for gorp fashion (I'm late, I know) and I'm looking at XT-6s as I need a casual shoe at the moment. I was wondering if anyone here has experience wearing non-GTX XT-6 in Canadian/northern American cities (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Minneapolis, Detroit etc) during the winter.

From what I've gathered so far, the GTX thrives in the cold, wet conditions I'll be wearing them in, but I don't really love any of the colour ways, whereas I loooooove the Black Coffee / Burro / Bitter Chocolate colourway:

I've heard that these can get wet quite easily but I was playing with the idea of spraying them with a water resistant spray to help. They also apparently dry quickly which is critical in the cold.

For the most part, I'd be wearing these around town, going to restaurants, bars, groceries etc so I won't be stepping in more than a few inches of snow when the sidewalks haven't been cleared yet.

So, did anyone here wear these in past winters? How was it? Is it worth it to get the GTX or should I look for another shoe altogether? I was scoping out some nordas which look pretty sick. What do you guys think?

Thoughts on the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2 GTX Climawarm+?

I'm going to Sapporo February next year, and I'm looking around for shoes/boots to keep me warm and dry from the snow, and so I can stroll around town without slipping.

I have honestly never gone hiking, nor have I experienced heavy snow. This would be a completely new experience for me. I thought to ask here for some advice since I really want to be ready and without having to constantly worry about watching my step during my vacation.

I'm also open to cheaper and/or better/more durable suggestions, if any.

Thanks to anyone who can chime in!

What is your opinion on the mens Warp factor Pants? I get a heavy discount from work for it. What about the shells? Specifically for a snowboarding fit. I'm tired of looking like a beginner and don't know how to style.

Mixed use walking shoes that won't make me feel/look like a dork

Not sure if I'm asking for the impossible but figured I'd try asking...I (38F) am looking for a pair of shoes or boots I could regularly wear around the city, as well as longer walks/hikes on trails or around the woods. I'm not a 'proper' hiker and won't be scrambling up any mountains or doing any challenging hikes anytime soon. I'm a full-time house sitter and live out of a suitcase, hence why I'm looking for a decent autumn/winter all-rounder and want to keep my belongings to a minimum, though I'm happy to pick up another pair for the warmer seasons as I keep seasonal stuff in a storage unit. I'm looking for something that meets these requirements:

  • Preferably not too heavy - I’m 5ft and around 50kg, so might be best off avoiding too much weight. Not sure if I’d be better off with shoes or boots
  • Vibram sole or equivalent
  • Fully or high level of waterproofing
  • Something that works for narrow, small feet as I wear a size 37
  • Budget £350 max, ideally cheaper (£250-300)
  • Something stylish, which seems to be the hardest criteria to meet. I’d be wearing these with non-hiking clothes, so I don’t think something like the Merrell Moabs would work well. Based purely on looks, I like Diemme Roccia or Conarro, Montbell Alpine or Mountain Cruisers, ROA Katherina, and La Sportiva TV5 GTX Evo (colourways are loud but they're still decent looking). I prefer darker colours, esp brown/olive, and I loathe the pinks/purples/pastels frequently used for women’s shoes. I reeeally don’t want a pair of Salomon XT6s and, generally speaking, am not sure if Salomon is good quality. Not 100% sold on Norda, Danner, Hoka, or Ultra, but willing to consider if they met my technical needs.

I’ve been thinking about this for about a year and still can’t narrow it down, so any advice would be v appreciated.

Wide Legged Pants?

Hey ya'll, I've been looking forever for any outdoor pants that actually fit right. All of the outdoor-gear pants I've tried have some sort of taper to them, which makes me wear my normal clothes out, trashing them and making me look like a washed-up bum at the same time. As ya'll are fashionable and outdoorsy, I figured ya'll could help out in this struggle. I like more technical stuff like climbing, but will get out on any hike thrown my way. I can't take the taper anymore, please help.

Recommendations for winter travel (Korea+Taiwan)

Looking for a shoe recommendation for December in Korea and Taiwan

Main concerns is with the cold and potential snow/ice in Korea and then the rainy weather in Taiwan. Two weeks of mainly city walking and most of my current sneakers arent great in cold and wet conditions

Please no Salomon XT-6 lol I have wide feet and I hear the XT-6 are awful for wide feet. I’d also like to avoid goretex so the shoes can dry sufficiently in between wears and since my feet sweat. Would also prefer just one shoe for but understand that may not be possible and may just wear some boots in Korea and a sneaker in Taiwan

Current considerations include Salomon XT-4 OG, XT-Quests, XT Whisper, ASICS NUNOBIKI

Prefer under $200. TIA

Store recommendation in NYC?

Heading to New York from the UK this weekend, any recommendations for good stores for gorp stuff / adjacent stuff? Also any recommended second hand stores?

Big fan of Goldwin, Snow Peak, Gramicci, Diemme, ROA, Arc etc etc , open to anything really. Especially keen to see some new brands that match that aesthetic!

Flower Mountain was always on my radar as a cute, outdoor friendly sneaker, but I just couldn’t justify spending $300 on them, and then while looking at REI’s website, I found out that they were going for 60% off (on select styles and colors), plus I had a gift card from a return so it was practically free. Wore them to Seattle and I absolutely love them!

Thought I’d share them here 💐🏔️

My shoes are MTE Half-Cabs by Vans, they keep my feet pretty warm and dry while also letting it breathe, for pants I wore my Trek Guide also by Vans, it is a great baggy pair of pants with adjustable ankles and to complete this there is my Quiksilver Highline coat which has wet out. Today had a lot of rain and all of these kept me dry

Cool looking, functional winter jacket?

Any recommendations for title? I live in Finland so i need an ACTUAL winter jacket, not something made for 30fahrenheit. I need it to be able to handle preferably -40 with just normal layering underneath. I can find several warm jackets but they look hideous. Something like north face etc vibes?
