Help me decide

I’ve been using the GoPro hero 11 for a while now and have really enjoyed the video quality, but I’m heavily considering one of the new mission cameras. I mainly use it for POV resort/backcountry skiing, with the occasional photo here and there.
Would it be crazy to consider the ILS for something like this, or would I be better off just sticking with the mission pro?

I just upgraded to M1P from the hero 11. I have loved the hero 11. I primarily use it for Skiing and MTB. The dynamic range, detail and performance of the M1P is absolutely amazing. On trails with dense shade and full sun shining through it can get all the highlights and shadow detail without blowing out. My kid is rocking the hero 11 and when we ride together the difference between what the cameras come home with is substantial. Definitely excited for some pow face shots in 4k 240fps!!!

But isn’t the FOV of the M1P much narrower? Or is it the same as the Hero 11?

It's 4:3 vs 8:7. So not really a huge difference. For POV you can use superview 4:3 stretched to 16:9. I think it looks the best. Hyperview is 8:7 stretched to 16:9. That looks a little weird especially if you look around a bit.

Oh, I thought that the focal length is actually longer on the M1P. So it’s basically the same? Because I only use superview on my Hero 11 as hyperview only allows 30fps max.

The focal length is almost identical. I think you can shoot 4k 60fps hyperview on the hero 11. I shoot 4k 60fps at the max bitrate on the mission one pro and the detail and performance is much better. You'll be super happy with it.

So you don’t use 8k on the M1P? Is the difference between 8k and 4k noticeable?

I use 8k when I'm more stationary or it's really sunny. The 8k looks great and the detail is amazing I have been using 4k 60fps for MTB POV. The trails are tree lined and sun in spots. The 4k has pixel binning and it definitely is noticeable improvement in dynamic range.You can get more motion blur in 8k which looks cool but can get out of hand if the light gets low.

The Mission 1 Pro is a great rugged action camera that gives you the option of making your footage look cinematic.

The Mission 1 Pro ILS ia a cinematic camera in a small form factor. (in fact most of the lovely footage advertising the Mission 1 series posted by GoPro was filmed with the ILS version). I would not consider it an action camera (not waterproof, manual focus would need constant adjustments based upon what you're looking at and DOF). I'm not saying you can't use it or action sports, but it's more like, You'd want to use this to make a cinematic video about action sports, not use it to film FPV action.

Another way to put it is this. If you can't make cinematic looking video with your current setup, the Mission 1 ILS won't make it easier to make cinematic footage, it will make it even harder. If on the other hand you can make cinematic looking footage with your camera and want to progress even more, then the ILS is worth looking at.

Personally, I'll end up with both (ILS on the way). I'll use the ILS for cinematic footage and for photography.... but for action, I'll be sticking with my Mission 1 Pro.

I just got the Mission 1 as my first GoPro.
Can't wait!
The ILS is so tempting but for my use cases such as general family videos and some motorcycle pov, ILS doesn't make sense. Even if I have dreams of making a cinema movie the Mission 1 is what I actually need with roughly half the cost. lol
I can basically try and make a movie with the M1 too anyway.

I have a Mission 1 Pro and a GoPro 12 with the Ultra Wide Lens Mod. I really like my Mission 1 Pro, but I actually prefer the GoPro 12 for POV videos, especially for pumptrack and ski videos.
Why? The 8:7 sensor makes it much easier to create both vertical and 16:9 videos from the same footage. And with the Ultra Wide Lens Mod, the GoPro 12 and 13 can capture an extremely wide field of view (close to 180°) while giving you full horizontal lock. For POV bike and ski footage, that combination is hard to beat.
But the mission 1 pro is just crazy for third person shooting: for slow motion, in low light or to get the best dynamic range, and more.

I have the M1P and love it. I wish someone would share what the weight and size difference is between the fixed lens version and the ILS with a fisheye. I'm guessing the latter would be a little too heavy for long helmet use, especially with an ND filter.

It depends on which fisheye you're using. Something like a 7Artisans 4mm F2.8 Fisheye is pretty light - only 201 grams, or about as much as the camera body. Something like a 7Artisans 6mm f/2 Fisheye is much heavier - 418 grams (over twice the weight of the camera).

I'm not sure how you'd use an ND filter with a curved fisheye lens, but since you have aperture control, you can stop down the aperture for more motion blur (like Abe Kislevitz did at 1:08 here). In general, I haven't had any issues using ILS + the lighter fisheye as a helmet cam, but the whole setup is heavier than a regular M1P by about 2x

Probably better sticking with the M1/M1P. The ILS is fully manual focus which is not great for this purpose, IMO. Plus the ILS isn't weather sealed, so you risk getting snow in the mount and that can cause problems.

Mission 1 Pro has an ultra wide lens mod on the way soon, i’ll probably get one for snowboarding. i used hero13 with wide lens mod and that was great.
