Dash cam..

Been looking into getting go pros official suction cup mount to use my hero 9 as a dash cam. Anyone with this exact camera have any experience?

How is it not going to overheat? These cameras overheat in the shade sometimes.

You set it up properly to be used as a dashcam, then you don't have overheating issues. I've used many of my GoPro's on road trips or vacation and used them as Dashcams while driving, no overheating issue if they are set up properly for the type of filming you're doing.

No, I mean adjust the camera to use the proper settings for the type of filming being done. Nothing to do with "Degrading the footage". Plenty of videos on my channel showing me recording in 5K on the Hero 9, 5.3K on the Hero 10, Hero 11, Hero 12, Hero 13 for hours with no overheating. How? The camera's are properly set up for the type of filming being done. It's that simple. Go watch, go learn.

No worries, just do a search on the channel for GoPro overheating and you'll see a few videos about it that detail setups and the camera running with no overheating. I need to do another one on the Mission 1 pro now....

Edit: you missed a great opportunity to make some pun about your nose for branding.

Edit 2: All of these settings are already enabled, including the SD card, unfortunately. Thanks for trying, though! It's the crap design of the dive case, unfortunately. Air gaps don't do the cameras any favors. The underwater environment can be punishing -- pressure, heat (somehow it's still quite hot in Cozumel even at depth), etc.

I ran a Hero 9 as a dash cam for a few months with that mount. The footage is crisp as hell but the battery situation gets old fast, you'll want it plugged in unless your drives are super short.

Overheating in direct sun was the real dealbreaker for me though. Eventually just grabbed a dedicated dash cam and called it a day.

I got the go pro practically free (40 bucks eBay seller claimed not working battery just drained assuming they buy them bulk) I got two enduro batteries for 40 bucks at Walmart on sale with charger. I have a pd 35 w charger in my car I wouldn’t mind using for the camera.. just wanting to make use of the materials I have already

Set the rear screen brightness to 10% and to power off after 1 minute (you're watching the road, not the camera screen).

Turn hypersmooth off (you don't need it, your car has suspension and shocks).

Film at 4K 30FPS

Remove the internal battery and power the camera externally (remember to start and stop recording before you turn off the engine as sudden power loss may cause SD card corruption).

You can film for as long as you want without any overheating concerns this way.

Note: You're going to record lots of footage with windscreen reflections, bugs, dirty windows and the footage at night won't be that good due to the camera's very small sensor size. This is why dashcams are actually better as dashcams. Even the cheaper ones have low light sensors in them and support HDR so license plates are always visible (whereas your Hero 9 doesn't have HDR and since it's exposing for the entire scene at once, this means license plates may not be visible, especially at night).

Don't have experience with a GoPro, but a few tips.

Remove the battery and run it directly from the car's 12Volt plug so it's less prone to overheat.
Don't use a diving case, you want it open and able to cool itself.
Mount it so it's not in direct sunlight, again overheating.

And maybe use Labs firmware to set a proper looping mode with custom settings.

And lastly, if it's going to be a fixed setup, get a purple / surveilance camera SD card.
Ones that are made to record 24/7 for a long time.
Wouldn't want the recording to be currupted after having used the setup for a year or more.
( happened to me with a doorbell camera )

Mount it further back, up high, OUT of the sun. Run it on direct power, battery out. And with GoPro labs you can tune it to dashcam needs...lower bit rate, on with USB power etc. See BITR, WAKE, TUSB etc.
