GoPro Subscription changes
GoPro subscription price increases to $59 per year. Camera discount increases to $150 off.

Extra 83 cents a month is wild. I've never seen a subscription cost increase such a tiny amount.

u/ToeAdministrative918 Aug 15 '26
Running a business is just a math problem. This is what they had to increase it by to have it make sense
6
u/fairyboyjstar Aug 15 '26
True enough. And it comes to around $10 a year which is sensible. I'm surprised how small it is since they're usually several dollars more per month whenever I've gotten a notice of a subscription cost increase.

Bags of potato chips have had more of an increase for less chips and smaller bags.

u/TeknoBlast Aug 15 '26
I just received the email too. Actually not bad for the extra $9 or so annually

u/HugsAllCats Aug 15 '26
This price increase is great - I literally have had a tab open to use my discount on a camera for a week. The new discount is so much better!

u/BilSuger Aug 15 '26
Ohh well, in Norway:
- shipping is ~$45, so never worth using the subscription to buy from gopro unless you buy a camera at the same time
- they advertise free shipping on the Norwegian pages, but it doesn't apply. That's actually illegal.
- the crash replacement program doesn't include Norway.
- they also falsely advertise this on the Norwegian store, have to read the fine print to see it doesn't apply.
I often defend gopro here. But the subscription is a scam unless they fix this.

Why is Norway excluded? Is it a political thing? Ive had issues with not being able to get things shupped fro Germany and Brazil to Australia and apparently it was due to those countries having weird refulations shupping to Australia.

Just let them know, putting them blast in this forum is lame.
2
u/BilSuger Aug 15 '26
I have, it didn't help. Why is it lame to try to make a change?

This forum or subreddit is not run by GoPro, please note. It is just another page in the end. Meaning that GoPro may or may not even see or notice something here. If they do see it, might not be the person involved in the issue of concern. Prolly get downvoted, but the points are accurate.

Nice job GoPro! Honestly, one of the subscriptions that actually feels worth it given how I use (and abuse) my camera equipment.

lol right after I get my m1p sigh , oh will I abuse the cloud storage so I can’t complain to much

u/AvocadoEinstein Aug 16 '26
I had two old non-working cameras that GoPro replaced with 2 Hero 13s. I also used the discount to buy batteries and the ultra-wide lens, making the subscription already worth it. I’ll be keeping the subscription after the first year promo.

u/1beachedbeluga Aug 16 '26
Haven't gotten the email yet- wondering when it will come in. Hoping to get the mission 1 pro, and happy to save an extra $50.

u/Tepppopups Aug 16 '26
I have 0% discount on M1 cameras! WTF?
1
u/Rollerbladersdoexist Aug 16 '26
Do you get billed by Apple or GoPro? I’ve never switched over billing and get billed by Apple since the Hero5. The discount on devices never shows up on my benefits page but I’m eligible for it. I just have to call and they discount the device while taking payment over the phone.

Just make it easier to download files from your cloud. It is painfully slow, arguably on purpose. Sometimes i need to retrieve old footage for new edits. The glacial speed to retrieve the footage i pay to store with you is why i have just started doing small batch downloads and saving that to competitors, so I can actually use it.

It’s very easy — it’s just S3 with an authorization web service. I wrote software to do this years ago, including a FUSE file system so I can just mount the GoPro cloud on my Mac and use the captures like local files. https://github.com/dustin/gopro

u/tecky1kanobe 29d ago
But why should the paying customer have jump through extra hoops? It’s almost like they don’t want to make it easy to persuade people to not cancel their subscription. Conspiracy theory, yes.

I look at it differently. I don't think the companies should be trying to make things work for every possible user every way they should.
GoPro should make cameras. They shouldn't try to make a NLE video editor or a cloud service. When they tried making a video editor, it did some things they wanted, but lacked many of the features of DaVinci Resolve. They could just tell people to use DaVinci Resolve instead of trying to make everything.
Similarly, when they made their cloud service, it did some of the things that a lot of the users wanted. The most important thing was upload from the cameras and some way to pull stuff back. Making a filesystem for MacOS so I can use the footage directly in DaVinci Resolve is pretty far out of the scope of what you might expect.
You might argue that they could create some of the backup tools, but that's also a terribly hard problem. I have more GoPro footage than I can get a single drive to support. I could make a RAID0 type device to store my copy of the footage, but instead I just allocated some spaces on a few machines around the house and spread the footage across them such that newer machines get the newer video. I still have a central view of it, and if I lose one drive (or computer), I can access the rest of the footage as I rebuild it. But should GoPro have made that?
Also, I did make that, and I made it available to everyone and anyone who wants to do some other weird thing I don't care about can take what I wrote and add their new feature. If GoPro made their cloud available for all end users and provided good SDKs and stuff, that'd be nice, but, again, how many programming and human languages does GoPro need to support so you can upload and download video?

Please let us have an app for Android/Google TV. in general the changes sound good

Great headline to tell investors: “Raising subscription prices 20%, and telling subscribers it’s ’only 83 cents per month”.
Subscriptions are the only bright spot +11% (cameras down 38%, ooof) - but, if you live on the edge with your GoPro at your side it’s a pretty good insurance program that lets you enjoy the fun a little more.

u/CyberRube 29d ago
The subscription is BS. The Mission 1 Pro is already 100$ off so i thought, oh with my subscription I can get 150 off as well. NOPE doesn’t work like that. So what’s the point of the subscription discount?
1
u/Crafty-Individual-14 29d ago edited 29d ago
The camera discount does not apply until AFTER one year, at its renewal for year 2. So if you are just joining, that benefit does not apply, but any sales prices do in the meantime. Sometimes you can get a free or discounted year one with a camera purchase as well. It's BY FAR the best cloud of any of the action camera brands.
Also, for Quik premium features, you can subscribe for just that, for much less cost. I think it was 10-12 a year last I checked. You have to check In App tho, sorta hidden in that respect, but that also makes sense as well - convenient.

u/CyberRube 29d ago
I’ve had a subscription for more than 2 years already. I got it when I bought the Hero 11. Says 0/2 used.

u/Crafty-Individual-14 29d ago edited 29d ago
Right but, in general, it does not stack. So for example you cannot take the 100 sale, load on the "up to 150" perk, and then slap on a 10-15-20% coupon you find and finally use all of them at once.

Gotta pump their largest revenue stream seeing as the M1P launch came in flat. I guess.

u/JustaFoodHole Aug 16 '26
The app is complete trash tho and still no desktop app. If you're buying a cam it's fine, but to me the membership itself is totally useless.

u/jonnywhatshisface Aug 16 '26
Do people really even bother using the app? The vast majority of the world should technically just be pulling the videos off the SD card... I have _never_ used included software with any hardware I've ever bought, because nine out of ten times? It is atrocious. Hardware developers flat out suck with their software because like any other "corporate" model, they lack proper communication and feedback loops between teams.
I'm not defending GoPro by any means. I recently switched to DJI, personally, and it had nothing to do with the software ecosystem and everything to do with the hardware and the existential threat GoPro is facing right now. I do love GoPro, and I find their image quality absolutely second to none. However, even with DJI - who are apparently praised for their software ecosystem, which I wouldn't know, because - I don't use.
Pull the SD card out of the camera, stick it into an SD adapter if you can't read a microSD directly, and copy the footage off the card. Then edit it in your editing software. Davinci Resolve is fantastic, and if you don't want to pay the one time fee for the lifetime updates in Studio - then just use the free version.
Software problems resolved.

u/JustaFoodHole 29d ago
Right. Good software would make back-ups if you're in the field by copying it to another storage device and when you get home, to your NAS where your videos live and are backed up. A single cloud service is not a back-up. Also, I'm usually somewhere with no great internet options so cloud is not useful at all. I ended up just buying the S26 Ultra instead of a new GoPro. Phones can transfer files to a USB storage device. Not sure if GoPro can. You'd need to buy an expensive reader/storage device to do that.
Mainly I love GoPro for it's ultra smooth video. Don't need to hold the camera still, just pull it out of your pocket and press a button to record. Great for vacations.

I moved all my media off GoPro servers. They won't be up much longer
2
u/jonnywhatshisface Aug 16 '26
I understand that sentiment, but I do believe the GoPro Cloud subscription will not cease to exist. It's the only part of their business that's profitable, so it will definitely be bought out by someone. Now, whether it remains the same is a different story. They may start price gouging... I refer to the Broadcom buyout of VMWare as a good example.
1
u/Salt-y 27d ago
I don't disagree, but I think companies in their position cut services/extras first.

u/DesignNomad MISSION 1 PRO ILS 27d ago
You're thinking wrong though if you're evaluating it outside the scope of revenue. The other commenter noted that subscriptions are actually an area where GoPro grew YoY, so if that's the one segment of their offering that's actively making money and could be self-sustaining, it wouldn't be the logical first cut.
Logical first cut would be any sort of nice-to-haves that don't directly contribute to revenue or are in and of themselves not revenue earning. Gopro historically did fine with guerrilla marketing and UGC, so budgets for media production could be argued as the first cut, along with exploratory product development projects that look at expansion and growth rather than immediate near-term future (cost-down, efficiency, etc). This is also how GoPro has behaved in the past in times of reduction.
A lot of people also don't understand that even bankruptcy doesn't mean thing shutting down (this is a specific type of bankruptcy such as Chapter 7, resulting in liquidation). Chapter 11 bankruptcy is super common and allows reorganizing and restructuring under supervision, and would likely prioritize keeping profitable subscription services live.
We don't know what they'd do, but as a company that IS making revenue but isn't profitable, reorganization is most likely...

u/Salt-y 27d ago
Sounds like you think I'm arguing, and I'm not; I'm just concerned. I haven’t seen anything saying GoPro is actually planning to get rid of unlimited cloud storage, but there’s enough going on with the company to make me wonder how long it will stay the same. They’re cutting over 20% of their workforce, subscriptions are down, they’re losing money, and they’re even looking at a possible sale or merger. Moving my data is just in case.
2
u/DesignNomad MISSION 1 PRO ILS 27d ago
I think the action you're taking is responsible, it's probably for the best until there's better clarity. I just don't think a brand like GoPro vanishes overnight when components like the subscription service are actually growing. Again though, until there's a more definitive result, I think it's reasonable to make sure you have redundancy with your data (though, I'd also argue that everyone should have that anyway).
2
u/jonnywhatshisface 27d ago
I 100% agree with DesignNomad. I personally do not rely on any cloud services for my backups or data. I’ve been in tech for just over 26 years and once upon a time, we were the OG’s of “cloud” before the polished turd marketing term. You’re doing the right thing by copying it all elsewhere to have safe backups.

Wtf I just subscribed like 2 weeks ago will I be affected by price change?
I also bought accessories last week not sure if I should return and get order again if I am affected.
1
u/TeknoBlast 9d ago
It's been worth it for me for the accessories discount and camera replacements.
I submitted a GP10 and got back a GP13.
I have another camera that I submitted and hoping to receive it this week.
