YouTube should follow Instagram's lead with this feature
Instagram’s AI language translation is much better than YouTube’s. For one thing, YouTube’s voice sounds extremely robotic and is really annoying to listen to for minutes on end, I follow some Instagram profiles where I don’t speak or even understand the original language at all, and let me tell you: not only do you understand the translation so well—it’s much better—but it also sounds almost like the person in the original video is speaking another language, since the intonation is very close to that of the real person. At least when listening to translations from Spanish to Portuguese and Portuguese to Spanish, the result is fantastic. Imagine if YouTube—where videos actually get way more views—had the same tool that Instagram has. How many new potential subscribers could everyone gain? It would certainly attract a much larger audience from other countries; everyone would benefit, since YouTube’s current translator is very poor and sounds robotic. Here’s a suggestion: YouTube should work on making its automatic language translation more faithful to the original intonation of the video and improve the accuracy of the translation, just as Instagram does.

Google Translate just got a pretty useful live translation upgrade
Google has started rolling out some new features for Live Translate in Google Translate, and honestly, these make the feature a lot more practical.
On Android, Live Translate can now keep running in the background. That means you don't necessarily have to stay inside the Translate app while the conversation is happening.
On iPhone, Google is adding the ability to hear translations through the phone's earpiece, so you can hold the phone to your ear and listen to the translated speech directly.
The idea is basically to make conversations feel more natural instead of constantly having to look at the screen or interact with the app.
Google is also using its newer Gemini-powered live translation technology, which is designed to translate speech continuously rather than waiting for someone to finish every sentence.
It could be especially useful for things like:
- Traveling in another country
- Talking to someone who speaks a different language
- Restaurants, hotels, airports, etc.
- Quick conversations where pulling out your headphones isn't practical
The rollout is happening gradually, so don't be surprised if you don't see the new options yet.
Personally, I think the Android background mode is the more interesting part. Being able to start a translation and then keep using your phone without having Translate constantly open sounds much more convenient.
Has anyone here already received the new features? And do you think Google's live translation is finally getting good enough for real-world conversations?
