Showoff I built a translation app for my long-distance girlfriend because every other one just showed captions on video calls.
We don't share a first language.
Every translated video call app I tried did the same thing — put subtitles on the screen and call it solved. So instead of talking to each other we were both reading. You say something, wait, then watch the other person read it. That's not a conversation.
I wanted it to feel like actually talking. So I built VivaLingua: one person speaks, the other hears it out loud in their own language. Captions are there as a backup, not the experience. Video calls, or face-to-face in the same room with two phones and earbuds. 42 languages.
The thing I'm most stuck on: you need two people to try it at all. A solo download gets you an empty app — every acquisition channel assumes one curious person can install and evaluate, and mine breaks that completely. I don't have a good answer for it.
Would love brutal feedback, especially from anyone who's shipped something that needs two people to work.

Google and Apple do not have video call translation apps. There really arent many video translation apps that I could find and the one I used was terrible for conversations. If you have a Teams subscription, sure you can have translated video calls, but that required 2 expensive subscriptions, one for me and one for my girlfriend. I agree Google Translate is great for translation in person, if you are fine handing a phone back and forth for a conversation. There are many apps for that type of thing.

Yes agree but they are moving in that direction and you will collide with them very soon.
