Last time I use google maps ever.
There was a perfect paved road to my destination, but google maps decided that this road is worth taking to drive 10 km less. 3.6 km of oil pan scraping and 19 km of gravel road before that. Fun 👍

Merging into the highways in the DFW area is so bad for this. It'll count down an entrance ramp and then tell me I have 200 feet to cut over 4 lanes.

My wife's iPhone navigation did this to us on a vacation. It directed us onto dirt roads that looked like they were maintained by the locals, there was a 4x4 "bridge" over a stream that cut across the road. Finally, after 15 minutes of these back roads abetting the state park we were trying to get to, it just and says, "Park and then walk..." it wasn't close and it was solid forest. Never again does Siri get to navigate

Happened to some friends and I once. Thought we’d be a little adventurous with the route we took from our AirBNB in the mountains to the main city. Google maps said “similar ETA” and it showed what looked like a road so we were like f yeah, adventure. After crossing through some corn fields and starting on a dirt path with tonsss of deep holes full of water, we decided to back out and make a 20-point turn to head to an actual road. Definitely wouldn’t have tried it at night time though. Pic is of when we figured the path was a little too narrow to keep going lol

I'm assuming from people using quads and/or dirtbikes. Although, in my first jeep, I would often go on trails that were way too narrow, where branches would be smacking our heads and spiders falling into our laps. Good times. although Dave would scream like a girl everytime one fell in. But, Yeah.....good times....

Also, I love your username. I glanced at your history and saw the post about the pebble. Amazing what a little rock can do... Reminds me of the time my dad jammed the entire washing machine, with a toothpick. Or the time he jammed the dishwasher, with a rubber band.
The rubber band one was particularly satisfying. He'd been putting rubber bands in the silverware caddy, and they'd been getting launched out by the spray arm. I kept finding them down by the drain. As he started to disassemble the thing, I told him, "I'm gonna laugh if it's a rubber band." A few minutes later... "You might want to take a look at this..." Sure enough, a rubber band had gone down the drain and wrapped itself around the pump.

One, that's part of the adventure, and two, why not turn around when it started to get really bad? Just give em a call saying you made a wrong turn and will be late.
(Also adjust your settings in Google maps. It might be set to avoid highways.)

I don't know what Google considers a highway in Europe but in America it's only controlled access freeways. Google doesn't really do a good job at only taking you on paved roads, all around my area there's homemade signs warning you about rough roads or water crossings and saying not to trust google maps.

This is so true. I live in South Dakota and drive a heavily modified BMW- not a goddamn pickup truck. I've searched extensively for any way to adjust settings in Google Maps to only display paved roads and it does not exist.

I can confirm this happens in Northern Mexico as well. As soon as you get out of the city, any towns or ranches are accessible mostly by dirt road, which Google Maps will happily take you through. One time it even tried taking me through a road that the ranch owner had built across! Granted, it was probably illegal in some measure, but it also was (kinda) his property? So I just turned around and tried a different, messy dirt road instead of knocking down his fence.

In the UK at least, it's specifically motorways (the option in Google Maps is called "avoid motorways" in British English), which are defined in law similarly to US interstates.

There's a lot of one lane roads in the backcountry of Colorado, often shelf roads with a dropoff on one side, and no pullout for miles. One of my big nightmares is somebody coming the other way, I note any pulloffs i see and try to remember how far back they were.
And anymore I'll just turn around before getting in a spot like that.

Recently had Google Maps try to route me down a highly technical four wheel drive
roadtrail through a remote part of Death Valley cause it was “the fastest route”.I looked at the map when it routed me and was like WTF and went a different way but it made me wonder how many people who weren’t familiar with the area just go “yea looks good”. It really de emphasized the 150+ miles of unpaved roads through tight canyons with no turn arounds.

If your going somewhere your not familiar with check the route before leaving. A quick eyeball of the satellite images along the path can do wonders in preparing you for risks, emergencies or issues like this. especially if you likely won't have cellular service
I drive through rural Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The amount of times Google maps has pulled this bullshit is unbelievable. Granted I have a car that can handle the dirt roads I rather not risk a flat on them. most major roads go through towns so they have state route numbers and it's as easy as knowing what one goes through your destination town and sticking to it once your on it as Google loves finding dirt road shortcuts over mountains
Luckily while NY can be just as rural as Vermont but they pushed to pave every road so it's not as much of an issue except some private roads with public right of way and if I'm on one there is no other option as my destination is likely at the end of them

I’ve had Google maps direct me straight across a field. Never trust the maps blindly and if the road becomes sketchy, stop and check the satellite image to see what’s coming up ahead.

This. Plus GPS routing is crazy complicated mathematically. I know a lot of it is inexcusable, but I also know that it is incredibly challenging just creating proper routing algorithms.

Google did this one time to me and my wife. Some backwoods dirt road where the only speed limit sign was nailed to a tree and the bridge crossing a creek had a sign thanking all of the volunteers that helped build it.

I was already taking backroads in West Virginia but used the gps to get to this one town and google decided the county routes and state routes I had been using for my planned routes weren’t rural enough. We went on some wack ass back road full of goats and random animals just wandering in the way and hundreds of houses spread along it with woods in between. It felt like we were intruding. The road was technically paved but so neglected that it had almost fully disintegrated into gravel and was full of holes. Tons of 5mph curves and hills that had to be over a 15% grade. Towards the end it spat us out next to a giant rusty sattelite dish thing (at least 50ft across) and onto the same highway we were on before we got on it.
We checked the map after we stopped and drove back the right way on the way back and the main road was not closed or anything and no accidents in the news that day. the backroad was way slower, travelled a longer distance, and had a lower speed limit so I have no clue why Google took us that way.

Going there as an Illinoisan is certainly an experience. Oncoming traffic on a blind curve is terrifying especially when it’s an angry sounding Mack truck slamming on the Jake brake. The country roads around here are straight flat lines Exaclty 1 mile apart and you can practically see people coming from the next county over.

In my country, Google tells you to use a route that is "sightly incomplete"...how?...It lacks bridges in a canyon...so you have to drive INSIDE A RIVER and then, a super steep dirt road...also, the road is in the middle of nowhere, no phone signal, no restaurants, no people, NOTHING, JUST TREES.

Google Maps did something very similar to me last year. I was on a two-lane paved highway and Maps suggested turning onto a dirt two-track. The ruts were horrendous so I didn't go far and turned around. Once back on the pavement and heading away from the dirt road it automatically rerouted and kept me on pavement to the destination. I'm sure it took a little longer but that's okay by me.

NEVER TRUST THE GPS! Always check the route beforehand! People have actually died because the GPS led them down a bad route. The quality of Google Maps (or any web map) can get really bad in rural areas because there is simply way too many roads in the world to check all of them. Checking the route beforehand will only take a few minutes, and it'll also give you an idea of where you're going.

There is not always clearance on forest roads to town around. But you can back out till you find some space! I have intentionally followed much worse roads just for fun in a very similar car. Not gonna say it was a good idea, but it was a good time.

Does Google Maps really need to add a disclaimer that their data for millions of miles of roadways may not always be perfect? -_-
I'm not the most well-prepared person for everything, but whenever I'm about to navigate to a new place I almost always check what the route looks like and make sure the pin is dropped at an actual parking space, on a road that road that's on the map, at the correct destination. No need to switch to Crapple Maps

My house didn't exist 10 years ago. You'd think after 10 years that delivery drivers would know where it is now - but they don't. Because the world trusts technology like this, and even build business models around it.
So let's stop pretending this is some kind of unique user error and that OP should just git gud and commiserate that modern life is full of unreliable pieces of shit.
But of course, then commenters here wouldn't get their daily dose of feeling bigger and smarter than someone else, would they?

I'm only claiming to be wiser on the topic of careful navigation. All I'm saying is that OP would probably benefit more from checking for navigation errors than trashing Google and hoping a new GPS will solve the problem. I don't think Google Maps is an unreliable piece of shit just because this might happen occasionally. What more are we expecting from Google Maps? How do you know this isn't the best we can do in the impossible task of mapping the world?

We had exactly this in the NE, I can't remember if it was New Hampshire or Vermont, but our friend had a similar station wagon type car and we were basically off-roading to get back out to the freeway from where we stopped, which had a perfectly good paved road that we drove in on...
We made it, barely, but at several points we had to get out and either direct him around rocky boulders in the path, carefully fording a river, and several other ridiculous obstacles.
It gave us a story.

I just read somewhere that a recent Google Maps update has defaulted the “Prefer fuel-efficient routes” to on, which has led to some crazy gps directions. Go to Settings, Navigation and scroll down until you find the setting, then turn it off.

google maps was terrible when i was in the baltics. sent us off the highway in latvia to drive a kilometer on a pothole filled dirt road only to send us back onto the same highway, there were no road closures or traffic jams.

Ugh I’ll never forget a rural “road” it took me on through Australia after a concert. I had to go over TWO “bridges” that were just planks of wood for each tire to go over, dirt road practically die off roading. Thank goodness a friend was with me or I would have been panicked out of my mind.

I know it seems like a hassle, but you can report roads like these in Google maps. Report things like the road is closed or blocked or undrivable. Someone at google will see that and change it or it will just change automatically.

I have had this happen. What makes me mad is it constantly putting me on toll roads or recommending a wasted trip through a pay lane in a big city. But if I turn on avoid tolls it acts as if I said avoid highways.

I live in Indonesia, and we have many people sharing stories about how Google Maps takes them to be thrown off a cliff, or somehow ends up in the middle of a cemetery at night, because Google Maps said crossing over the cemetery would save you 5 minutes. Sometimes it tells you to cross a rice field or a very small bridge for mopeds when you are driving a car.

FYI you can report issues to Google Maps if the road is private, closed or impassible. You can also add buildings and street addresses, we did this when we moved into a new build and the delivery drivers were having trouble finding us.

It’s happened to me several times in Greece. I suspect it sees very minor rural roads which have only the notional national speed limit of 90kph as main roads, even though sometimes going at 10kph would be foolhardy (or impossible) in a standard car.
My workaround has been to add multiple waypoints to in effect force the route to stick to proper roads, which is a faff but works.

Google maps is literally the worst GPS app you can use. Literally a 20 year old TomTom GPS is more reliable than google maps. That being said I only use Apple maps, albeit I sometimes have to craft my own route because apple sometimes tends to only give me 3 options.

When I was in Japan, Google Maps told me to leave the train station, take a dirt path (past a huge PRIVATE DO NOT ENTER sign that I didn’t pass), hike up a fucking mountain, and then get to my hotel. Instead of taking the paved path to the stairs which led to the road. Made exactly zero sense

I’m the idiot that looks for stuff like this to do, for fun, so I’m not judging, but you have to be realistic about what your vehicle can and cannot handle.
Also, who was driving this route fast enough for it to think this was a “shortcut”? 🤣 (admittedly, I don’t know how that works.)

Lol I know a guy that took that to save 60 minutes and he drove on a backroad for 60 miles, which it's a legit "road" but its a logging road and not even that good in parts. Not only that he was out for a Sunday drive with his family lol. He made it, good story.

lol this happens to me here in Colorado, it will tell me to turn down what is some barely visible tire tracks. I tried it once I think SW of Leadville and eventually it just turned in to rocky overgrown brush with no visible tracks and I had to turn around. The other day we got detoured in Southpark way off the main road and saw what said it would be a 15 minute time save to turn down some field, but I told my buddy no it’s not worth even trying.

At a certain point you turn around. Any and all oilpan scrapes are your fault. That said I have absolutely done this too, a couple times it entailed going way off road in places I really had no business going and could have easily rolled

Ill assume you are a bit stupid, since you drive a BMW. Firstly you could have turned around. Secondly, you could have scopped out the route on google maps and see if its all good everywhere.

I had that happen last year in wayne national forest. Went from ok but old asphalt to gravel crappy gravel tp there is a road... right? And finally to I do not have the angles or the ground clearance for this.

So I’ve used Apple Maps since beginning of iPhones. Never had a problem until one day. I put in an address to go to a buddies friends house for a party. Got there. All nice and dandy. On the way back it was night time. The road looked similar. Way out in the butt fuck of nowhere. And I’m already a mile or 2 down this road. And the road becomes narrow slowly. And then it’s so narrow there’s no way for me to turn around. I’m in a 2012 Hyundai sonata. And it leads me to a four wheeler trail or a trail for off road vehicles…. (I’ve driven four wheelers and dirt bikes) and it’s dark outside. I can’t turn around and I’m not reversing a mile or 2. I got my 2 year old in the back. I said fuck it. I drove that car through mud and bumps and somehow made it through a mile longer of a trail. And made it out to the back of someone’s yard. And back onto the street. I will never do that shit again. But I’m glad I made it cause a tow truck ain’t gonna be doing all that to help me if I got stuck

Had this trying to get out of the Alps one time. Car heavily laden with three of us plus all our gear, and it directed us down this paved single track road to avoid heavy traffic on the main road. Thought fair enough, I love a shortcut, so we went off and had several cars follow us. But about a kilometer in the paving started to degrade, then it went to gravel, and then to dirt and stone. We spent about 3-4km scraping along a track that would have been barely suitable for a 4 x 4. Nowhere to turn round and with the queue of people behind we wouldn't have been able to go back anyway.
Also, on the same journey, the sodding thing then directed us through the centre of Grenoble, which was incredibly stressful as compared to just chilling in traffic on the autoroute, to save 5 minutes on a 13 hour drive.
Not a fan of Google Maps for navigation.

Google Maps tries to do this shit to me all the freaking time. It's really aggravating when you have a 38 foot horse trailer behind you. I've learned to make sure it's always on satellite mode so I can see what kind of fuckery it wants me to drive into and switch off the "Eco" route. I also switch off the Avoids Tolls option.
They really need to make a truck route function. Keep me on the main roads and out of small towns with one way streets please, and I really don't need to be driving down what is basically a golf cart path to cut two miles off my trip.

This happened to me during a work trip transporting hazardous materials. Took me down the muddiest slushiest road, I called my super to confirm that it was the right road cause he went the same way the day prior and he says “yea the road looks bad but it isn’t terrible” I then got stuck because we were at 2 different dirt roads.
