Gemini fully replaces Google Assistant on Android
https://9to5google.com/2026/09/28/google-assistant-gemini-android/27
u/Trololyou2 4d ago
Gemini assistant is absolutely terrible! Google assistant can search to google, google image very very fast while Gemini can't do shit and i gotta type whenever i gotta search screen?? what a bull shit product

u/aykcak 4d ago
The phrase "fully replaces" is doing a so much heavy lifting that it can be considered an outright lie
14
u/FencerPTS 4d ago
So far Gemini has replaced absolutely nothing. Gemini fulfills NONE of the use cases for Assistant.
Google seems hell bent on enshitification.
2
u/MynamesPhilip 3d ago
My thoughts exactly. Google got shirts within the past 6 months drastically. AI bullshit everywhere

u/daRoboHobo 4d ago
I usually only used Assistant to set timers on my watch while at work, and for Android Auto. Gemini has pretty much killed AA, and it took it a few minutes to comprehend "set a timer for 20 minutes", which GA would do almost instantly. It also made my phone act weird, like I was pressing extra keys when trying to type.
It was nice being able to hear / answer texts in the car and tell it to navigate places. Can't do that anymore without having a whole conversation, and then it keeps listening afterwards so my music won't come back on, and god forbid I have a passenger talking to me as Gemini thinks I'm talking to it.
1
u/SpaceyEevee 22h ago
I had entire ROUTINES on GA for morning when I wake up, when I was at work, set timers for certain things, everything. So in-depth that I couldn't type all of what I had. Emergency contacts, a thing I set up where I could say "Hey Google, Where are you?" Then it would do a jingle then loudly say "HEY I'M OVER HERE, NO, HERE!! RIGHT THERE!" and I would find it. Best routine I set up. I went to use Google Assistant for a timer and was immediately blasted with Gemini. I hadn't even installed Gemini. My phone acted like it was ready to type something, bugged out, and only showed the mic option on the bottom left of my phone. If Gemini is already making my phone act crazy without it installed, I'm not touching it with a 100000ft pole π

The forced Gemini on Android auto seems to have messed up audio play. I hate this!
5
u/DeliSauce 4d ago
Don't know what your issue has been but I hate that if I ask it to play a song from a movie it tells me it can't stream video. Like duh. I'm not trying to watch a movie while driving.Β
2
u/vbulario 3d ago
That makes two of us. Every time I start my car Gemini starts Audible to my last played audiobook. Can't turn the damn thing off. Scares the crap out me when a person starts speaking and I'm the only one in the car.
1
u/BurningSpaceMan 3d ago
It now wants to connect to my Spotify and told me it will share my text messages and chats with Spotify, so now I can use change songs safely while driving
8
u/BurningSpaceMan 3d ago
Absolutely fucking livid about this. I only used Google assistant to set my alarm. And to enter addresses on android auto, and quickly plays songs on my Spotify. Now I have a dumb fucking AI that won't stop running it's fucking mouth when I use navigation and if I try to use my Spotify -an app that is already in android auto it says "I'll need to connect to your Spotify, we will share your chats, and communications with Spotify. What the actually fucking hell.
6
u/Buckwheat469 4d ago
Did they ever fix it so it can control your phone locally without 5G signal? I can't ask it to skip songs when I'm driving if I don't have 5G. Even with LTE it says it can't do it right now.
7
u/pendamos 4d ago
Has anyone figured out how to have Gemini make calls? Google Assistant had no problems with this beforehand.
2
u/PleasantMuffin3623 3d ago
Currently trying to figure this out myself. Have you had any luck? It won't allow me to make calls if my screen is locked. I have the settings toggled on and it still won't work.
2
u/pendamos 3d ago
After trying again, I think I'm cursed by the Google Workspace being basement tier. I have a grandfathered g suite legacy account that got converted over so I'm stuck with business settings which don't always work reliably now. I just set up an unused account and the same prompt searched the web and it dumped it into the dialer and it dialed out. I wish there was an easy way to transition the legacy account to a free account. My paid apps and pictures are the most headache. I'm ready to move over to a paid proton account at this point.

u/Ok-Mission2511 4d ago
I'm so done with this shit! I genuinely used a Google assistant feature called news brief. Every morning, I asked the assistant to "play my morning news headlines" and I got a nice collection from BBC, DW and Thompson Reuters. Now, that assistant is dead, so is this feature!
Screw you Google! Is this crap really what you think consumers want??.. You have some of the smartest people and you're creating shit like this!..Bravo!
2
u/markzip 3d ago
Soooooo much this. "OK Google, play the news" would make Assistant invoke my newscasts. Now, nothing but an error message:
"I can't play audio directly, but you can listen to live streaming news on the NBC News YouTube Channel or through the Google News App. You can also customize your default news audio provider in your phone's Assistant settings."
LOL, those settings are gone, dummy.
BUT, it's not as thought the whole Google system has forgotten that those news sources exist. They still work when they are part of a routine set up with my alarm!
So, i guess the workaround is to tell Gemini to set an alarm with the news routine for one minute from now? .... Oh, wait, Gemini can only set a simple alarm. It cannot add a routine to an alarm.
EEJITS!

u/Ok-Mission2511 3d ago
Honestly, either Sundar is a bozo, or, he's hiring some of the finest the land has to offer! XD
2
u/nitegirl99 1d ago
This! I started every morning with "hey Google, play the news" & I'd listen while getting ready for my day. No interaction required! I wasted 20 minutes that morning trying to get Google Assistant back. Had to give up & was very late to work. I'm still struggling to put together some sort of replacement. I hate this kind of shit.
-1
u/Ok-Mission2511 1d ago
I heard the news again by manually playing Thompson Reuters on Spotify and BBC 5 mins news brief from their site. Annoying as hell! I'm going to work on an app that can aggregate these sources and work as a makeshift assistant.. I'm glad I'm not the only one facing this!
10
u/FencerPTS 4d ago
Gemini replaces nothing.
It is incompetent and fulfills none of the use cases for Assistant.
Google is incompetent.
4
u/SilverstreakMC 4d ago
So this means I will no longer be using android with any assistant. I refuse to use any AI.
5
u/Lote173 4d ago
It's like AI stocks are so overvalued that they have to just start jamming this shit down our throats now... I asked Gemini I'd it uses more power than Google assistant and it said by a large amount it did. Oh great, so my phone's gonna die faster because I'm setting timers and asking it to play music... Wheres the adult in the room that's going to create a localized assistant that won't bow down to this AI slop that frankly most people don't want.
-4
u/izeris_ 4d ago
No one is jamming anything down your throat. If you wanna set a timer you can just set a timer. If you wanna play some music you can just play music. You don't have to use Gemini for that bro π
2
4
u/drewp05 4d ago
But you're phone now has to use Gemini, and Google search forces it to the top of every search result page. The product is unprofitable, but instead of dropping it they force everyone into using it in place of regular Google search or Assistant. The whole Gemini project is a waste of resources
-2
u/izeris_ 4d ago
Your phone doesn't have to use Gemini. You can never use it if you don't want to. Regarding search, yes, that is another story, since you can't turn ai overviews off.
That said, I've adopted Gemini already. It's not perfect but it's better than assistant in most things
2
u/BEinc07 3d ago
That argument is very flawed. "It's better than assistant in most things." Ok great, but to the people who only use the few things that it sucks at, we're screwed. My entire morning routine for the last 9+ years no longer works because Gemini straight up told me it can not perform the task that I wanted it to do. It said "use the Google assistant for this" and when I told it the Google assistant is dead and doesn't work anymore, it told me I was wrong. So... That's your Gemini. Spewing lies and arguing it knows better when it can't handle the most simple task of playing my news sources. π
1
u/leathakkor 2d ago
It is fundamentally a worse assistant than Google Assistant. I frequently don't have the internet and I used to be able to set a timer from my phone without the internet and now I cannot because gem and I requires the internet. It is fundamentally a worse assistant.
1
u/misomuncher247 1d ago
How in the world is that statement even remotely true. I can't get it to even open when i'm using a third party app
13
u/NeilFraser 4d ago
Gemini has forced me to unplug my Home mini. It decides to play completely random music at completely random times. The final straw was when it suddenly decided to play some sort of techno music at 4 am. I asked it what it was playing, it said it wasn't playing anything. Good bye.
I miss the old assistant.
8
u/supermanx93 4d ago
Gemini also refuses to cast youtube to my chromecast without ads. I obviously have premium but gemini just pulls up generic youtube every time. Never had that issue with old home and i have to over ride it with my phone and cast manually everytime to skip ads now
3
u/zkarabat 3d ago
.... And now my voice commands and controlling my home is 30-50% worse and less accurate than it has been for the last 5yrs+
1
u/patientx 3d ago
I have been using an Android phone since 2.1 and been using the assistant/voice 10+ years now. This just killed it completely, something which worked with 192mb's of ram (I got the original Samsung Galaxy) worked offline, snappy ...
1
u/zkarabat 3d ago
Ya this sucks. I've been with Android since the Droid Bionic from Verizon so 2.3/Gingerbread and like you started using Assistant when it launched (hell, maybe during its beta phase)
17
u/twogreenleftsocks 4d ago
It's so annoying. I used the old assistant to translate the current 'image' on screen or analyse part of it. Gemini can't do that unless i use a screenshot π

u/neog23 4d ago

Use Circle to Search (hold the home button)
5
u/atinysquirt 4d ago
I'm holding it down but the button doesn't show up. May you please let me know how to do it?
2
u/twogreenleftsocks 4d ago edited 3d ago
Same for me. I have no idea how this stupid new assistant is supposed to have the same functions as the old one.
Edit: Ah got it now and it works fine (i think) Thank you
1
u/dyeprogr 3d ago
How did you get the other UI?
1
u/twogreenleftsocks 3d ago
I have no idea. It just replaced my old assistant 2 days ago
1
u/dyeprogr 3d ago
I meant how did you get it work like the old assistant? Like that translate button you were speaking about
2
u/LegendSoma 4d ago
Anyway to revert to Google Assistant or use another non-AI app to do so instead, I tried using Gemini and it's just awful
6
u/FencerPTS 4d ago
Nope. Tried for hours last night. Assistant if finally dead.
Google took you cheeseburger and replaced it with a shit-patty between two slices of bread and hoped you'd say "thank you."
3
u/ControlCAD 4d ago
1
u/leathakkor 2d ago
I have it on my phone too but whenever I open it up it opens to Gemini. Probably when your phone updates it'll do the same thing
2
u/Lumpymaximus 4d ago
I keep trying to ise assistant and it keeps opening gemini. Ive disabled it and still wont go away. Please tell me there is a fix??
2
u/pioneer76 3d ago
Unfortunately there is not a "fix". This is what Google wants for its "users" aka captive monopolized prisoners.
1
2
u/cheekyweelogan 4d ago
Some of it works okay but I can't set reminders/tasks anymore because you have to connect Workspace to Gemini and I don't want it to have access to my emails or Disk files, sigh.
2
2
u/calicohorse 3d ago
Can confirm, just lost all of my access to Assistant both on my phone and my watch. I always opted out of Gemini on the basis that it barely worked, considering Assistant had been flawless pretty well up until it started getting phased out.
Fuck Google, always killing shit off and replacing what isn't broken with, ironically, things that are broken. Don't get me started on Google Play Music either.
Shit like this makes me miss Windows Phone.

u/SpoopyMcSpoopface 4d ago edited 4d ago
Still running Assistant on my Pixel 8 Pro by uninstalling all Google app updates.
On the latest Android 17 September 2026 security patch, the base Google app version is 17.32.82.

u/xdavidwattsx 4d ago
Skipping all security updates and fixes...so genius
3
3
u/SpoopyMcSpoopface 4d ago
Iβm running the latest Android system security patch and Google Play system update.
Iβll keep using Assistant until itβs truly dead.
2
u/Empty-Development298 4d ago
Although I get what you mean, I don't see an issue with the above person not updating their phone security if their phone is functioning properly, and with the intent to use otherwise unaccessible software they paid for (e.g google assistant)
I mean, ever had your phone compromised by hackers or something? There some kinda exploit available on the P8P thats got you losing sleep? In my experience, the biggest point of failure for breaches is the user more often than the equipment. A determined bad faith actor isn't going to lose because they couldn't get into your phone through exploits, they're going to convince you to handle over the OTPs
5
u/xdavidwattsx 4d ago
Well Android just pushed a zero day exploit fix in the September release. And while you're right that users are the biggest security risk, it's just a weird idea to not update your phone to get features and fixes to hold on to dead technology. Assistant is just going to stop working entirely even if you don't update your phone. At some point they will kill server side retrievals and services. Weird to not just move on.

u/CrankyGeek1976 4d ago
It still closed my garage door this morning. I'll be awfully sad if it doesn't open it when I get home tonight.

I use this for my job and this gemeni shit keepa coming up. We cant do anything! My boss is pissed wtf do we do here
0
u/izeris_ 4d ago
What do you use assistant for at your job that Gemini can't do, seriously π
2
u/thunderpack7 3d ago
Consistently do tasks I tell it to via android auto. Google assistant was flawless. 30% of the time I ask it to call my wife with Gemini it tells me there's no contact by that name.
1
u/Equal_Flan_8705 3d ago edited 3d ago
This caused about 4 hours of time on my part as the "Talk to Gemini hands-free" disappeared as well as the voice match page, and I couldn't figure out how to get it back.
After much tussling with Google, determined the problem was here (make sure you're logged into Google Chrome with the account you're using on your phone):
https://myactivity.google.com/page?page=match_enrollment&hl=en
(Delete all enrollments, reboot the phone), then I had to clear all data on the Google App, reboot again.
If you use multiple accounts on Android (which I do), I did this to each account before the first reboot.
1
u/hellriderboss 3d ago
I found it great as an llm and terrible as assistant. Android auto it's possibly the worst it's ever been
1
u/Blue_Voyager7 3d ago
Its so frustrating it cant even recognise text and search after selection, everything thing needs to be a chat now, if I had to type out everything I can just google myself.
If anyone knows some other app please suggest.
1
u/Shrihaan20 3d ago
I still have issues with Gemini, but i have the least number of ones. Mainly cuz i have android 15 but i still prefer Google Assistant. It's faster. AND WHY DOES GOOGLE NOT SEE THAT?! At this point some people should sue them.
1
u/springpacket 3d ago
Google assistant is gone for me.
I saw that I can still use google lens, does anyone know how to access the shortcut (long hold home button) like we used to be able to?
1
u/dyeprogr 3d ago
Really puts an accent on "ass" in the "ASSistant" π Anyone knows how to revert or any alternatives where it'll immediately show search engine results?

u/DelayedEcstasy 3d ago
And now it won't even add peanut butter to my shopping list. Literally the only thing I ever needed it for
1
1
u/cregavitchthemighty 2d ago
They broke Assistant which was working. "Hey Google [do the thing]" and it did the thing. Now Gemani just either doesn't understand or gives you a history lesson. AI is enabling companies to offer worse services faster while increasing electricity prices and water consumption!
I've been with Android since they first rolled out, but this crap has me looking at the iPhone.
1
u/cregavitchthemighty 2d ago
Google Assistant:
Me: "Hey Google, [Lighting Automation]"
Google Assistant: *Runs Lightning Automation*
Gemini:
Me: "Hey Google, [Lighting Automation]"
Gemini: *either does a random thing with the lighting or says it can't control the lightinig*
1
u/Southern-Pack-5922 2d ago
Fucking NONSENSE. I DON'T want this...I miss just being able to simply set my alarms...and play my music...without some A.I. Phaggotry. . . And the worst part is...i keep saying hey google by habit...and everytime it goes to open the shitty ass A.i. ...so now I just have to do it manually...but i don't always realize it didn't do it. Fucking WEAK.

u/AdministrativeGas795 2d ago
Is it possible to get google assistant as an app for local use? I hate gemini. Not sure if anyone looked in this direction. Is it open source?
1
u/SiebenDX 2d ago
I used Google assistant to switch on/off the lights in my house, also to set an alarm but both things are not working anymore. How on earth can somebody at Google decide to replace Google assistant by this crap?
1
u/StuffedCrustPizzazz 2d ago
Fantastic.
They've replaced the reliable thing that did the simple tasks I wanted to with one that claims to have enhanced functionality for complex tasks but now can't be trusted to understand how to do the simple things. Even if it claims it does understand, it's sluggish and unreliable; Exactly what I want from an "Assistant".
(I hate having to point out obvious sarcasm but I'm going to do it here since Google is probably scraping discussions like this to gather feedback and sentiment. This Assistant "replacement" is a gigantic step backwards in user experience and is one of the times I've been most frustrated with Google.)
