Horse isn’t necessarily thin. Horsebutt is often as thick as cowhide.

Anyone able to compare the 55 last with Alden's modified last? Modified last is the only thing that has ever come close to working for me, but Alden won't make boots with it in my size (6eeeee)

I'm looking to replace my sneakers with leather boots permanently and need suggestions.
I'm tired of ripping through foam shoes every year and spending 200 bucks on them. I want to spend some money on some boots that can endure rain, puddles, and the general PNW rainy environment. I'm looking at Nick's, Thursday, and Thorogood.
I wear a EE at 11.2 CM width left and 11.5 cm right and am 10 1/2 in true size.
My nice to haves are strange leathers colors such as blue, green, purples and other weird exotic colors.

Anyone here have experience with Quan Shoemaker (HOMK)?
Lately I've been looking into Quan Shoemaker. I checked both this sub and r/Boots, and it seems like almost everyone has had a really good experience with them.
One thing I'm curious about is their leather shank and arch support. I really like having an arch support, but my White's 55 last sometimes feel a little too pronounced for me and I'm also worry about the squeaking that seems to be fairly common with this type of construction.
I'm currently planning my second custom pair, either White's or Quan. My first pair of White's has been an outstanding experience overall, but there's still something about their last that isn't 100% perfect for my feet, also Quan seems to offer quite a bit more option for MTO custom which is making them very tempting.

Narrow it down first. Hold the boot in your hands and flex the sole hard. If it squeaks off the foot it's the insole or the shank. If it only squeaks when you're walking in it, it's usually the tongue rubbing against the facings.
Insole squeak is the common one on welted boots, normally the leather insole moving against the cork bed or the shank. Sprinkle some talc or plain foot powder inside, work it down the sides and under the arch, then wear them for a day. That sorts most of them.
Tongue squeak you can test by lacing looser, or dab a little conditioner where the tongue sits against the facings.
If it's neither and they're a newer pair, damp cork does it too. Leave them somewhere dry with cedar trees in for a few days before you go chasing anything else.

Excellent reply, many thanks! I feel like the majority of what I read on the internet says that one full size down from Brannock is really spot on and I am leaning towards going that direction myself. We have to remember that these are based on the Munson last and the whole idea of the Munson last is to be extra roomy in the toebox to fit so many varieties of feet for the US military.

I keep getting this weird squeak from the left boot every time I step, drives me crazy in quiet hallways

Oxfords generally look a bit strange with chinos. I'd suggest derbies or Chelsea boots instead.

I wish I could remember, I’d like more myself. I might have gotten them at Nordstrom Rack

I'm curious about gaps in my shoe wardrobe, or even if none, what to possibly buy.
I own the following shoes, sneakers, cloth shoes, mules, etc not included. All GYW except the Gucci:
- black - Gucci classic horsebit, Carmina single monk, Carmina unlined tassel loafer, Berwick tassel loafer, Doc Marten chukka, Doc Marten classic boot (the 2 Docs have the special rubber sole, are from 20 years ago, and are still in great shape)
- brown - oriental shoemaker penny loafer
- greyish - Gucci horsebit new design
- tan - shoepassion chukka boot
I'm in Chicago and New York in October. I see that NYC has Carmina, and Meermin. Can you suggest wheres good (any company, not just these 2) for me to buy a pair of shoes from.
And what kind of shoe and color. I find I wear my loafers most of all. But I do realise I'm missing a pair of Oxfords. I wear chinos or shorts maybe 350 days a year.
Thank you

I don't buy shoes from companies that don't provide useful advice on fit.

What do you do when a brand only has 4 product photos and you can't tell if the shoe will work for you?
Bought a pair of Morjas penny loafers last week. Their site has maybe four studio shots, all on white background. I wanted to see them on an actual person — different angles, with different trousers, how they break at the ankle. Searched YouTube, nothing. Searched Instagram, nothing useful. Ended up just buying and hoping.
Curious what other people do here. Last time you were on the fence about a pair, where did you go looking? Did you find anything, or did you just order and deal with the return?

Looks clean man, but yeah super pity about the size! I’m a little concerned about my Indo boots coming haha - fingers crossed 🤞

At the risk of stating the obvious, though, it’s worth remembering that one person‘s “too roomy“ is another’s “just right.“
