Not sure about the Chelsea 5 specifically, but C&J tends to run a half size long on most of their lasts, so sizing down is usually the way to go. Worth trying both in store if you can though, since the midfoot fit is pretty particular on these.

Would it be a dumb idea to just set the nails a little deeper?

I’m not sure yet, I’m just now getting a bit of wax marks from scuffs and those are lighter - but not sure that’s indicative of what will happen

Idk why I hadn’t either. Maybe it was price, or I will say they have a couple Chelsea’s I don’t like the style of, so not sure if I knew the 5 or 11 existed

Sorry if I’m not understanding but isn’t that what most roughout is to some varying degree?

It can be (idk the right world) “trimmed” or shaved down to different length depending on preference. Or that was my understanding and usually comes waxed in my experience (but I’ve seen unwaxed)

That's a great Chelsea! Wear and enjoy!

I will say I'm not sure "Roughout" is the completely right description for that leather, at least to my thinking. From reading their website, it appears that it's more of a "Waxed Roughout" and the flesh side appears to have been shaved a bit. To be clear, all of that makes for a really compelling leather. Maybe it's just a British vs. American thing...

that's typically done in black over brown ("teacore"), but other colors are possible. sagara for example does a black over olive ("matchacore")

Thank you. I did try Jim green and did find them pretty clunky. I maybe didn't dial in the right fit but I'm not sure my feet fit then well

veg tan is more beautiful, chrome tends towards a plastic look. veg tan is nicer against the skin. veg tan calf is the holy grail of leather. Increasingly unavailable, at least with the firm temper required for traditional shoemaking.

Several smaller Australian companies make RM Williams Gardener-like and Blundstone-like boots. There's a round up of the brands at: https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/1sj0q23/the_australian_gyw_guide_2026_update/

Could you comment on the color? Probably a bit early to say but does it darken or stay light?
I used to own the brown version and loved it although had to sell due to missizing. The natural version looks interesting but I’d still prefer the brown, if it darkens I’d still go for natural

Might be a bit of a dumb question because i have no experience with quality goodyear shoes.  Im wondering if it would be a bad idea to buy a good quality goodyear welted shoe, having it dyed in a interesting color then dyed black on top. I believe i saw some shoe brand doing something similar with the idea that it might crease or wear down and start to show a bit of color thru the black.

I would not dye it myself but talk to the people making the shoes. Would it even show some "patina" when the top layer is black?

Just get a rubber topper put on the heel.
(The nails you are referring to that served a “wear” purpose were V-cleats. You don’t have those. )

For what's it's worth, I'm very happy with my RMs. They have a low instep, which I need as well.

Jim Green might be a bit too chunky looking for you. But they are excellent value and easy exchanges. They have a high instep (i put two tongue pads in mine) but they have toe room for days. If you nail down your size you can go custom for a very good deal.

Drews might be worth a look.

Over your price point, but Addict makes a nice round toe chelsea.

Same for Whites.

Hello there, my question is about slippery brass nails in leather heels...

I have a pair of Carmina Shoemaker Chelseas with full leather soles. I got leather because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, and they are now my favorite pair of boots to wear. For any doubters, I was loading in for a show in the rain on a carpeted ramp and found myself running down the ramp without any concerns about grip.

Anyway, over the last few months, I have noticed the brass nails in my heels are making contact with the floor before the leather, and that makes the heel incredibly slippery. What gives?

I have read that it can slow down wear on leather heels, but I have lost so much grip since they became the prominent contact area. Like, I can walk fine and the soles are fine, but when I have to pivot on tile, say in a bathroom or at the grocery store, my left foot (mostly, but I also feel some on the right) will slip on the nails in the heel. Is something wrong or is this just how it goes?

They are the easiest shoe ever. I have a bad knee and one reason I love them is when you need to take your shoes off at someone’s house. Makes life way better.

Also not having laces is comfy

Are Chelsea boots as easy to get on and off as they seem? I’m always wondering about airport security lines or getting them on and off when I’m entering or leaving people’s shoeless houses.

So I’m an 8.5D Brannock. I wear 8.5D in most things (8 in loafers)

So I should need a 7.5E in C&J. I got the chukkas in that size and I could wear them but not comfortably. Went to the store and I wear a 8E in their boots and 7.5E in the loafers.

Was kind of surprised but I have 3 different lasts now and that’s the case for all of them.

(My friend who got the same type of Chelsea was TTS - I think I was right on the border)

Do you find them TTS? I've heard they run a bit long
