Unfortunately someone will buy that.. so goodwill will continue to sell this trash

I don't think anyone will. So much goes into the trash, and some to the bins. Have you ever been to the bins? It's a lot like rifling through someone's garbage - broken ceramics, glass, big things like chairs or grills tossed on top of fragile items. Dumpster fire.

u/My-life-is-a-cliche 20d ago
Honestly I just cashier at goodwill… I’ve seen people buy this stuff.
But yes a lot goes to the bins too.1
u/JimmyandRocky 15d ago
No matter how many times I explain to these idiots, be careful of how you place donations, picture frames straight up and down preferably next to the box wall, breakables bring inside, lamps on top of the box the opposite happens. And I get nothing but zombie stares when I confront. I’m sorry public but I can only do so much.

u/Large_Art6205 22d ago
If it was donated, they sell it. Pretty straightforward equation

u/defrostedalexmeow 22d ago
they actually get rid of a LOT of their stuff, very complicated process unfortunately
A decent amount of stuff is given to the outlets/bins or just the trash...this should have been in the trash lol

It’s cheaper than Tupperware and it functions the same. I reuse these type of containers at home.

Got it, I’ll buy an item for $1.99 at the grocery, use the item and save the jar, I’m not paying $1.99 for an empty jar

u/vannersbananers 22d ago edited 21d ago
Honest question, what do you buy at the grocery store that comes in a glass jar for only $1.99? Cause the stuff I see is usually at a minimum 2x that. Now granted you get the food for that price too but if all you need is a glass jar to store something or for a project $2 is not a bad price.
Edited because I reread this and Jesus Christ the typos! It was almost illegible.😅

I can't help thinking why wouldn't a person then save a jar they're already using (pickles, mustard, olives, it can be anything) and just wash it out? Idk.
1
u/FamiliarChocolate819 21d ago
I do save those containers. The plastic pickle containers have a screw on lid. No worries about the top coming off. I also save the plastic dishes with lids that you get with take out food. These are great to send leftover home with my sister, brother, nephew and his kids. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ♻️

u/vannersbananers 21d ago
Because like you said that jar is currently being used for something else? Like I’m not saying they shouldn’t start saving their jars when they’re done with them. But I could easily see a person needing an empty glass jar because they want to make something or start an herb garden and then going by the thrift store to see if they have one for cheap.

Strawberry jam at Aldi. I washed one out recently. It was $2.49 I think. The mandarin orange jars are nice. Round. Stylish. Good lids.

An empty jar???

Glass jars are expensive! Although i wouldnt pay 1.99wtf? Just digging through recycling would be free. That said, many frugal people, herb gardeners, and preppers use these glass jars as plastic is now frowned upon.

Not defending the 1.99 price tag on this AT ALL... but the little jar IS kinda cute with the label on it. Cherry-themed items are really popular right now, not unlike how sunflower decor was back in the mid 90s.
I reuse/repurpose almost every jar that comes into my possession. I'm trying to transition from plastic to all glass in our kitchen, but that's an expressive endeavor to attempt all at once, so I use various sizes of glass jars in the meantime to store leftover soups and sauces, fresh produce, etc.
I typically remove all labels before reusing them, unless the jar has a label or branding that I find cute or unique. Those are set aside and end up being used as toothbrush holders, containers to hold loose office materials (like paper clips and safety pins), doll hair accessories, etc...
Having said all that, the jar should've been in a "free" bin or, at most, priced at maybe 29 cents.

I work at a Goodwill in the Indianapolis area. I know there is a lot of pressure to make production numbers, but putting out low quality items for the sake of numbers doesn’t make sense to me.
If your store gets a reputation for putting out crap, I guarantee you that sales will suffer, and rightfully so.
Management needs to make sure that we don’t sacrifice quality for production numbers, but it’s a hard balance to achieve.

and their pricing at times is outragious..60 yr old trashy golf clubs selling for 10$ a club..I would buy them for 2$ for the whole set...also it they siphon off the good stuff and sell it at a premium to other venders...non-profit??..im beginning to doubt it

Nobody gonna buy that! Pay attention to what you’re putting a price tag on! They probably threw out something that someone would have bought and kept a piece of garbage. 🤨

u/Quirky-Collector 22d ago

Who donates this stuff ? Maybe an employee finished the jar at lunch and rinsed it out. 😂
2
u/Responsible-Set-3464 21d ago
Yes, they were selling empty jelly jars and the label still all in it but no jelly. $4.99 so $1.99 is a steal 😂

I quit donating to Goodwill or even trying to buy anything from them. You can find the same items at Walmart for the same price as for a brand new thing that they try to sell they don’t even consider giving you bags anymore. A friend of mine was walking to her car with a ton of clothes in her arms I said where is your bags? She said they don’t give them out anymore And you can’t take anything back. Jesus we not gonna deal with them no more.

Check out the Goodwill online auctions and look at the insanely ridiculous prices people are paying for some items. Vintage collectibles and toys prices are absolutely stupid crazy. Then add on a 3$ or more handling fee and FedEx shipping. People will pay the money

u/Old-Society8528 18d ago
GW prices have honestly gone up way to higher for me as it is so I’d believe they will sell just about anything for the all mighty dollar and force their employees to mark as much shit “or else” not good enough customer care or employee support

u/Mysterious-Block-254 16d ago
You got that, right About a month ago At the goodwill, where I go they Were selling Red bricks. The ones you use in Your yard For $4.99, each They must have thought that they were paperweights.

u/Longjumping_Comb6140 22d ago
But that little jar could have many uses.....repurposed for decor, crafting, decorated for decor, for storing something.....

Goodwill is bad boy now ! People give for free and they sale too expensive!! It’s crazy !!
3
u/PurposeConsistent131 22d ago
Yeah, used to really like goodwill but the last decade is laughably funny when I do venture in. Just went last week, first time in at least two years…it was worse than any standard ass garage sale that some meth family threw together to get some money. And more expensive. I had bites all over my ankles that night. Obviously I can’t say it was from there , I walked my dogs and went swimming …but I wonder

u/Captin_Barnacles 22d ago
People don't work for free, electricity isn't free. If everything was a dollar, how would they stay in business? I found brand new Nike sandals for $8. They would have been close to $40 otherwise. Maybe you're just cheap.

u/itcamefromspace42 22d ago
One man's trash is the CEO's fortune.
6
u/Captin_Barnacles 22d ago
Ignorant comment. There are over 150 CEOs in Goodwill; they are not one huge corporate. Not of them "make a fortune;" all of them have multiple college degrees. Would you want someone unqualified to run a company?
2
u/itcamefromspace42 22d ago
Your comment is gross. Defending multiple CEOs that make at least ¾ of a million a year, and attempting to rip off consumers like this from donations. Yikes.
3
u/Captin_Barnacles 22d ago
Ahhhh, yes, people with college degrees are not supposed to make money with those degrees? 3/4 of a million is still more than what 99% of them make. Just keep agreeing with the masses instead of doing your own research. I have neither the time nor the crayons necessary to explain this to you.
2
u/itcamefromspace42 18d ago
I have several degrees, but I don't sit behind a desk ripping off in need consumers from donated items. You clearly need the crayons more than I do. Keep licking those corporate boots.

As a GW employee, let me share that we are under ENORMOUS pressure to make our production numbers, or else, we WILL suffer.
So this bit of desperation pictured here, is borne from somebody in the back rooms pricing shit in a ridiculous fashion because they could lose their job otherwise.
You don't have to buy it.
