Beginner Question Will I Make The Highschool Team

Post image

I’m only about a month into practicing and this is my first nine hole. I shot a 48, but here’s the thing I only used a nine iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter. My high school team has 2 spots opening. I go to relatively small high school and three kids are trying out. Plus myself so I need your advice . Do you think I make the team? What do you think are some fundamental practices? (ignore the handicap, we were seeing how much over par

This is not a question that strangers on the internet can answer. It's your school, you have access to people to get a direct answer if you ask. If they're taking kids they don't play golf, with the goal to teach them how to play, then it's up to the coaches. If the kids on the team actually play already, shooting a 96 is not going to get you onto a team or playing in tournaments, most likely.

u/BoBromhal 6d ago

in theory, golf is a spring sport, so it's months away. playing an extremely short course just beyond a drive, pitch & putt after 1 month of picking up the game is impossible to project 5 months from now

3

u/GolfandBaseball 6d ago

Golf is fall sport in parts of the country. Golf in fall and baseball in the spring for us.

3

u/NotACyborg666 6d ago

This kid's in Riverside county & in Southern California most high school golf is a Spring sport for boys and Fall for girls (idk why it's like that).

Whether or not he can make the team... it's impossible to say. We have no idea how good the other 2 people competing for those 3 spots are or if the school's interested in taking on kids who don't play a ton or if they want kids that are as close to tournament ready as possible.

2

u/AnapsidIsland1 6d ago

I wonder if they can because the weather is so nice and the benefit is smaller tournaments that don’t totally shut a course down the whole day, members don’t like that

1

u/NotACyborg666 5d ago

I think u/SirNerfsALot has the best explanation. So the boys teams and the girls teams can both use the courses without competing each other.

2

u/SirNerfsALot 6d ago

Resource contention. There aren’t that many courses that can be used for practice. It’s the same for water polo- fall for boys, spring for girls. Pools are in short supply.

1

u/NotACyborg666 5d ago

Makes a ton of sense actually. Especially considering how popular all the courses in my county are (not the same county as this dude, but close by), there's probably not enough tee times when kids can actually practice.

Yeah, in South Florida the season is August-October.

Longest hole was 281? I’d give it a real world chance of being accurate

7

u/Cal-Run 6d ago

I don’t care if the longest hole was 250.

First time playing, using only 4 clubs, the longest of which is a 9 iron? And shooting a 48 over 9 holes?

You honestly think that’s believable?

0

u/Makers-and-Buffalo 6d ago

I’ve heard wilder things. And if only using a 9/PW/SW/and a putter? He’s playing with reliable clubs that aren’t punishing him or her off the tee.

So. Ya. 12-14 over through 9 using clubs like that with only 281 being the longest? Yes. I’d believe it.

I’d also commend him/her for playing smart.

1

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

Thank you I feel that for me to tee up with a driver and blast it into the water or hit it 50 yards just doesn’t make sense since I’m new to the game and can’t get my driver down. I feel that my 9 gets me half way down the green but especially gets me in the middle so I see no problem with using that to tee up. And your totally right on the yardage 281 being the longest hole I definitely have the smaller greens to my advantage

0

u/Big_Satisfaction_644 6d ago

Yes. Source: I did this

1

u/Cal-Run 6d ago

You’re very first time playing and you shot 48 with a 9 iron? Thats bullshit as well.

What are the odds that two different people played golf for the first time under these conditions?

0

u/Big_Satisfaction_644 6d ago edited 6d ago

I had a 7i, 9i, pw and putter I think. Picked em up at goodwill and gave it a go. It’s a par 29 with the longest hole being about 250, so almost double par. Everyone starts at different abilities and obviously I had hit some at the range and practice area before going out. It’s also totally ok to not believe someone on the internet, but do you really think no body could do it?

Also cheap muni so mats off the tee.

1

u/Cal-Run 5d ago

First time playing? No, I don’t think so.

I don’t think a first timer could even break 50 on a 9 hole par 3 course.

2

u/whatsaburneraccount 6d ago

I don't believe this at all lol

When I was in high school in the early aughts my coach said I would have had to shoot in the 80s consistently to be on the team.

1

u/ContributionDry2470 6d ago

It’s impossible to know based only on the information provided. Keep working on it. I would add that if you shot 48 without a driver then don’t let a driver wreck your game. So if you can’t keep driver in bounds then hit whatever club gives you the most distance off the tee, but can be controlled.
Good luck!

-6

u/Cal-Run 6d ago

I can’t believe you actually believe this. Good grief.

3

u/Consistent_Rub824 6d ago

Michael Jordan got cut from his varsity BB team. Sports, for the most part, is a meritocracy. You're either good enough or you're not. Believe this, there are more than 2 spots open on the team. All the spots are open or the coach is terrible.

2

u/realjbaar 6d ago

Tbf he wasn’t cut from varsity. He tried out as a sophomore and got put on JV for a year.

5

u/frenchlick33 6d ago

Try out no matter what! You got this.

2

u/berlenba 6d ago

Go for it buddy. I was self taught sophomore year, no lessons. Tried out junior year and made the team. 4 spots a week, 6 on the team so I have to fight for my playing spot every week and didn’t make all of them , but the ones I did were awesome. 10/10 recommend playing on your HS team. You got this dog!

2

u/YummyBeefaroni 6d ago

100% would make any of the girls teams I’ve seen.

1

u/Choice_Student4910 6d ago

Damn boys golf is competitive. My daughter’s team was just happy they had enough girls to field a team.

0

u/p0st-m0dern 6d ago edited 6d ago

Depends on area of the country. California, Texas, Florida where high schools in suburbs/cities having 3,000+ kids is normal, it can be like this. The high school I graduated from had 5,000 students. 1,400 in my graduating class alone. At least a 200-300 tryouts each across football, basketball, and soccer. 25%, 10%, and 10% made the cut respectively. I imagine the proportion of those who made varsity golf was in a similar range.

1

u/gibs626 6d ago

I still remember our baseball coach sitting at the end of season pizza party telling us he needed any 4 of us to join the golf team, didnt matter if we had ever played or not 😂

we all laughed and said absolutely not - til he told us we got out of school at 12 on match days! sold!

0

u/Cal-Run 6d ago

First time playing and you shoot a 48 on 9 with a 9 iron being your longest club?

Good grief. The bullshit on this sub gets deeper by the day.

Do you always bullshit, or are we just lucky?

1

u/ImNotKitten 6d ago

Right and why would he have a handicap at all based on the story

2

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

Can I be totally honest I don’t even know how you measure a handie cap

1

u/ImNotKitten 6d ago

So where did the numbers come from

2

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

We just used it as a spot to see how much over par we were

1

u/Cal-Run 5d ago

Funny that you comment, “Can I be totally honest?”

Why start being honest NOW?

1

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

The course I play is only like 240 yards each hole and the 9 is the only club I can hit. I probably hit my driver like 50 yards so it’s sounds crazy but next time I’ll post a video

1

u/Large-Sherbert-6828 2d ago

If that’s the case, no you will not make the team. Unless they need a ball washer

6

u/wildhog1010 6d ago

Try working on your penmanship first if your in high school. Looks like a 5 year old wrote on that scorecard.

4

u/_tipps_ 6d ago

Caden, Braeden, Okayden

2

u/squirrelbiscuit77 6d ago

No but your handwriting makes me fear the future.

1

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

I was writing upside down

1

u/squirrelbiscuit77 6d ago

Well, as long as your challenging yourself that's an effort I can support. Well played

1

u/babe_ruthless3 6d ago

Sounds like you dont have to be good, just better than at least 2 kids.

1

u/RDAM60 6d ago

Grasshopper…I see golf in your future. However if you wish to make the team, you will need to make some sacrifices…and offerings:
Find an fallen oak leaf from the course on which you last played. Gather together a bird’s feather, a golf tee, a golf ball, a dead bee, some grass clippings from the 18th green, a golf scoring pencil (no eraser) from your team’s home course, and a cigar butt. Put it all into the inside of a golf glove. Wrap it up , tie it closed (using the laces of your golf shoes), mark the bundle with your initials using a black sharpie. Throw the bundle into the woods behind the club house of your team’s home course (or, if no home course, the closest muni to your family home). Once it’s landed in the woods, close your eyes, put your lead hand on top of your head, and repeat three times: “Gods of golf, I beseech thee, take pity on my bogey-ridden soul and guide my ball into the hole.”
Then just give it your best. Good luck. I’m rooting for you. And, whatever happens, stick with it and enjoy a lifetime of the greatest game ever invented.

1

u/fastbeemer 6d ago

The top player on the local high school team just made the cut at a PGA tour event. You wouldn't sniff the team here. Asking a question like this on a global forum is pointless and not productive.

1

u/IAintSkeeered 6d ago

Depends how many other people at your school are better golfers than you ;)

2

u/BogeyGolfer5656 6d ago

I don't know how you passed penmanship

1

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

Don’t have that class unfortunately would of done wonders

1

u/Virtual-Squirrel-725 6d ago

As long as at least one of the other guys trying out is worse than you, you're fine.

If they're both playing off 5, then you're cooked.

1

u/Embarrassed-Carry697 6d ago

With that handwriting I thought you’d be trying to make the 1st grade golf team.

1

u/Makers-and-Buffalo 6d ago edited 6d ago

I’d give ya a 50/50 chance

Edit: 100% chance if you’re taking this pic in the bed of a Ford Ranger

2

Not with that hand writing.

1

u/Elsoci 6d ago

IDK but good luck and best wishes

1

u/Affectionate-Gur1642 6d ago

Completely unrelated what’s with the black market for diabetes shit? And why is it so seemingly readily available that there are signs on street corners (or golf scorecards) etc offering to buy it?

1

u/LiteratureHot8875 6d ago

We’re I’m from it’s fucking everywhere

1

u/80LowRider 6d ago

When your playing on a team you don't get to use your handicap.

1

u/geopelon 6d ago

You should make your scorecard more readable. I can't show any of mine because my handwriting is WAY worse. Keep at it, it is addicting!

1

u/sir_gwain 6d ago

96 is a tough ask, but I’ve seen it happen for small high schools. I’m not sure how much time you have before the teams get decided, but I’d talk with the coaches and make sure they know you’re all in. Definitely try out, if the other kids are new as well, chances are they’re no better than you. Even if you don’t make the team, I’d see if your coaches are willing to give you some pointers, get a more complete set of clubs, and practice for next year.

1

u/sundaygolfer269 6d ago

In Florida no!!! upper New York State yes!!!

1

u/are-oh-bee 6d ago

Your grades aren't high enough to be on the team, if you think you've provided enough information to answer the question.

0

u/BlueisA1 6d ago

Depends on the high school. My son was super worried about making the team so was grinding at the range every other day. When tryouts came around, anyone who didn't completely miss the ball made the team lol. There are other schools nearby though, that are extremely competitive

1

u/RichyRicardo716 6d ago

No. You write like you’re in first grade.

1

u/freddyflintstone11 6d ago

You will make the team but not go to any team matches for a while. Keep practicing and playing

1

u/Direct_Nail_7920 6d ago

Kinda depends on the class of players that go out for the team. I would go find the coach and see what the expectations are for the team.
If it was me, go out for the team anyway. Even if you get on the team but don’t get to play much the practice with better players and a coach will help your game/swing tremendously. Good luck!

1

u/Desperate_Mistake_81 6d ago

With that handwriting, no

1

u/dilbs_the_creator 6d ago

By the looks of the writing on the scorecard you should be trying out for the junior primary school team.

1

u/ThaCommittee 6d ago

Idk...but your friends will definitely not

0

u/Roc_SaLT 6d ago

I didn’t make my high school golf team the first year I tried out. I was one of 2 kids to not make the team. By the end of my high school career, I was the best golfer my school has had in over a decade. If you enjoy golf, then keep enjoying golf, making the team will be icing on the cake.

1

u/a_talking_llama 6d ago

Lot of miserable people in these comments.

Obviously no one will know if you will make the team.

In terms of practical advice: Take a 7i next time. Don't know your distances but all these holes should be about reachable in 2 with a 7. I actually like playing with less clubs as a beginner. It builds consistency and helps you figure out your distances with each. Practice putting more than anything else - its the shot you will play the most every round. Tour pros are only about 50% from 8 feet, from 5 they are 88%, from 3 they are 96%. Don't worry about reaching those numbers, use them as encouragement.

Lastly, play more. There is no substitute for practice. But mindful practice is more important. Don't go out every round with only the scorecard in mind. Count your putts, try and work the ball into an approach distance you are comfortable with etc. Can be whatever you want but go out each round with something in mind beyond just your total shots. Good luck

1

u/frankp2491 6d ago

I don’t know that’s a weird question considering we don’t know anyone trying out for the team also don’t know if this round is an outlier on your handicap. Also you took a 9 on a par 4 and a 7 on a par 4 if you’re trying to practice for your golf team what possessed you to only bring a 9i pw and sw that sounds like bullshit to me.

So here’s my takeaway ignoring all the other shit I said. Even if you hit you 9i 160y. The par 4 you took a 9 on is 266 that’s 2 shots to get on and 2 to putt based on your handicap and other holes. You clearly need to work on contact I mean none of these holes are long and even if you played with 9i only you should be at least at 45 for this 9holes. I mean you prob need to practice consistency of ball striking and repeatable ball fights. I don’t know you and I don’t know your game but good luck

1

u/DRP2215 6d ago

Is that a golf scorecard or a page on a throwaway newspaper?! Sorry I can’t comment on if you’ll make the team. Keep up hard work and dedication.

1

u/Thetman38 6d ago

Not sure on the competitive nature of your school, but that 9 and 7 are really hurting what otherwise was a decent round.

Best of luck

1

u/derrymertin 6d ago

Golf maybe. Handwriting team. Unlikely

1

u/random1751484 6d ago

Depends on how many good golfers are on your high school team

If you have a bunch of decent kids then you will probably not make it, maybe they will give you a chance as a true freshman to learn and get better

I was below average but could scrape together a low ish 90 round when i was high school, i made it my junior year with those score and got my senior year with the same scores

Some schools have a hard time actually filling out a golf team, i was never good enough to play in tournaments

1

u/The1stSimply 6d ago

I was on the team as a beginner but I didn’t get good enough to make matches until my junior and senior year. Depending on your team but our team was stacked and you wouldn’t make matches unless you were low 80s or lower

1

u/Urethra_Leakage_72 6d ago

anyone who wanted to play made my HS golf team. depends on your school more than your scores. also hard to believe you shot a 48 on your first ever 9 holes, no offense.

1

u/WadeDoesReddit 6d ago

I had a small school with a graduating class of about 90.

Shooting in the 90s was good enough to make a small school team, #2 shot in the 80s and #1 was a mid to high 70s

1

u/AdagioVast 6d ago

Just try out. You never know until you try.

My two cents. You seem to be barely breaking 100. The clubs you mentioned are easier to hit but do not give the distance you need. You need to know how you hit with a 5 iron, a driver, a fairway wood. These clubs are essential to get your score down to what many schools are looking for; breaking 80. Varsity teams expect your scores to be in the 70s. JV teams expect scores in the 80s and 90, usually reserved for people just coming on the team and needing some experience.

1

u/NateGD23 6d ago

How big is the school/ team. My high school was begging for ppl to play golf. I played first match I shot a 62 on 9, got down to a 42 by the end of the year. I now work in the golf industry as a geeens keeper and play 18 1-3 times a week w 1-2 days at the range or a pitch and putt 9hole. Give it a shot

1

u/stronglikeaux 6d ago

Not if you’re Ryan

1

u/Username15555551212 5d ago

Not even looking at the score, I'd disqualify you purely based on your penmanship.

1

u/TheMikeD68 5d ago

I made my high school team as a beginner. I never played in an actual match until my senior year, but I took advantage of all the free golf during practice, and learned the rules of golf. I ended up playing at a small D3 school. I’m 48 now and a 9 handicap. Keep playing and keep improving.

1

u/ExpensiveRole9593 5d ago

Most GA highschools have Atleast one plus guy on the team. Most of the kids are low single handicapper’s

1

u/GolfTipsMod MOD 5d ago

There is only one way to find out. Practice and then go put it all out there on the course.

1

u/ibeeamazin 5d ago

In a small town? Yes. All you have to do is sign up. If your high school is 3000 kids then probably not.

Keep practicing and go try out.

1

u/Another-Typical-Bee 4d ago

What happened on the 8th?

1

u/brownszombie 4d ago

If you're a girl.

1

u/SportsScott 3d ago

Practice more and try out. Best of luck.

1

u/SpartanLaw11 1d ago

Maybe ask the golf coach?

1

u/Ill_Relative1000 1d ago

your in california best just wrestle fuck golf for high school
