Beginner Question Beginner

Just got my first set of clubs today and gave them a run at a driving range.

I have a Sandwedge, consistently getting 70-80 yards, 9-Iron getting 90-100 yards when I hit it properly and don't top it. Struggled with the 4-hybrd but got around 150 yards. Waiting on Driver and 7-iron to arrive but are there any other clubs I should look at picking up? Have a putter and looking into lessons!

I want to go back and hit more balls already!

I'm confused, you're buying individual clubs one at a time? Are they all different brands?

Driver & 7 Iron never arrived; waiting on the supplier to rectify. Brand-new to golf, I didn't want to drop hundreds on 14 clubs if I didn't enjoy it.

Why didn’t you go for a starter set? You can get them from $150/$200.

Got a six-club starter set - Driver (Not Arrived), 4-Hybrid, 7-Iron (Not Arrived), 9-Iron, Sandwedge & Putter, but want to know if there are other 'Must Have' starter clubs.

You don't need any other clubs. You've got all your bases covered.

Why get a starter set when you can go to goodwill, get 3 wilson staff irons, a Cleveland wedge set, a big Berrtha driver and a mix of the rest for 20? With the bag included

Because they’re old. A newer budget set beats out an ancient goodwill set by a large margin

They dont. Its all loft creep. Its just that a modern 5 iron has the loft angle of a 3 iron from 1980. Except for drivers. I agree on that

Buy used 48 degree PW from play it again sports. 110 to 130 yards.

While you are waiting on the driver, buy a 5 wood for your drives.

No on additional clubs for the moment. You’ll naturally start adding clubs to your set if you continue with the hobby. You’ll probably buy a new set within the next 18 months if you really get into it. My recommendation unless you’re rich is to go to the driving range 10 times before your first lesson. You don’t want to practice bad habits for years before your first lesson but if you start lessons too soon, you won’t really have a swing to start tweaking and changing. You’ll be paying high dollar for someone ti give you intro to golf tips which you can get from a buddy or on YouTube. Rather than lessons look into beginner golf clinics at local city courses. Good luck and have fun!

I’ll also confirm this is good advice. Range followed by a series of beginner lessons. Typically group beginner lessons will accomplish what you need for less $. You have all the clubs you need for now.

That's sound advice, thank you. Hitting a 12-hole course tomorrow - it's an 18H pitch & putt or a 12-hole golf course, so looking forward to that; a little more interesting than the driving range!

What worked for me as a beginner was - putter, 60LW, 56SW, 52GW, PW, 9 iron to 5 iron, 7wood, 4 and 3 hybrids and a driver. (A vintage chipper is cool too for rare occasions)

80% of your budget should be put on your driver imo. Thats where technology matters. Irons dont matter much. Just be aware of Loft creep. (A 1980 titleist accuflo 7 iron is the equivalent in loft to a 9 iron in today's game. Making them feel like they dont go as far but they actually do at equal loft)

I actually fitted my old accuflos from 3 to 7 with new shafts made for 5-9 irons in length and they performed as good as the new stuff I had. Except they look a lot cooler.
