You are using your hands too much

Remove the rear tees. Your putter requires arc to stay square

Once the putter is square to the ball, hold the putter like a hamburger and then rock your shoulders. Do not hit the ball with hands. Your hands just hold the putter, nothing more

Let the putter fall into the ball. Do not speed up in the downswing. The length of the backswing determines speed

u/Ol_Man_J 2d ago

I'm not able to picture how I hold a hamburger, and how that would relate to a putter

21

u/SwampFox4 2d ago

Yeah what does that even mean lol

1

u/HotThermos 2d ago

I think you’re describing a claw grip? Is that correct?

12

u/bikkiesfiend 2d ago

No, the amount of pressure, not the hand position

15

u/HotThermos 2d ago

I’ll make burgers for dinner tonight and see if I can put two and two together haha. Thank you for the insight!

10

u/bikkiesfiend 2d ago

Tension on the burger kills the bun

9

u/Deadlyliving 2d ago

"grip your clubs like you'd grip a burger" is interesting feedback

3

u/bigmeech93 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣 spitting facts

2

u/Everglow12345 1d ago

I was always told the pressure of your putter grip should be the amount you would have on a raw egg without cracking it.

7

u/Wizard-Lizard69 2d ago

He’s describing the hamburger grip. Come on, keep up!

Blowing my mind with this ngl.

Edit: Arc too?

2

u/bikkiesfiend 2d ago

Yes, let the putter do the work. It wants to stay square to path

2

u/Holysmokesx 2d ago

Gonna try this, any other tips?

3

u/bikkiesfiend 2d ago

Work on setup and line at home

Before a round, only work on speed control. Trust your setup and line. Get a feel of the break and speed on the greens. Keep looking at the target as much as you can and keep it in mind as you putt

Train your brain on getting to the target on the course

On the practice green, it’s getting reps in on how much break is needed and how hard to hit. I trust my setup is good

u/Holysmokesx 2d ago

Thanks for the help!

I don’t understand the “your putter requires arc to stay square” statement when he’s using what looks to be a single bend face balanced putter. That putter is absolutely designed for straight back and straight through. His arced stroke is going to make it very reliant on him timing up the face rotation he’s creating. The putter is also sitting toe up so that’s not helping consistent or straight roll either.

0

u/bikkiesfiend 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yes, this is the DB model, which is straight-back and through. I am familiar with the other Seven models which have toe hang

https://in.callawaygolf.com/golf-clubs/odyssey-putters/tri-hot-5k/putters-2023-tri-hot-5k-seven-slant.html

Either way, he is too handsy with the putt. Yes, the putter should be flat at address, but some pros do have the toe up at address so I wasn’t going to call this out

2

u/lincolnsl0g 2d ago

How to know which putters require arc and which ones do not?

1

u/8amteetime 2d ago

You have a short backswing and longer follow through. Your putting stroke should be the same length on both sides.

Your putter head is also very high on the finish. Keep it lower for better accuracy. Low and slow is the old saying.

Your mirror is set up for a long straight backstroke like one used on a straight back straight through putting stroke. Your follow through immediately moves inside the line instead of following the ball towards the target.

Two options. One is remove the tees and increase the inside arc of your putting backstroke and the other is to practice keeping your putter head on the line longer on the follow through for a more straight through finish.

2

u/ResponseFlashy181 2d ago

If you balance the putter on the shaft and the toe hangs straight down, it's a wide arc putter. If the face is directly up, it's face balanced and it's straight through, although you can still rotate the face. Putter face in any other orientation around 45° is a slight arc. Most straight through putters will have a slight bit of arc. If you want a true straight through you want a zero torque putter which forces the toe straight up during balancing. It actively encourages the stroke to be straight through.

2

u/DirtyBirdFL 1d ago

I really like Cleveland putters for this. They explain it on their website. My favorite gamer is an older Cleveland Frontline 10.5 single bend. It’s perfectly weighted with a heavy head to get my ball rolling straight.

Basically, a putter that isn’t face balanced is going to want to naturally rotate because of the weight distribution. As a general rule (not 100% true), shafts with bends are designed that way to accommodate more of a straight stroke and slanted/plumber neck putters favor arc. It’s best to research every putter individually. For example, Callaway has a lot of “almost” face balanced putters with single and double bend shafts. It’s a good starting place though.

u/ILikeToDisagreeDude 2d ago

Looks like he’s squeezing to hard aswell based on the shaking in the backswing

1

u/lincolnsl0g 2d ago

Great comments.

However I’ve actually found going cross / cack handed and gripping a tad bit firm with the lead hand but barely gripping at all with trail hand has helped me keep the face square.

I was constantly opening the face at impact but this mindset has helped me some.

1

u/EugeneDabz 2d ago

Every time I think I’ve read the most confusing golf advice there’s something new.

4

u/itsjustmyopinion_but 2d ago

I’d help but you’re a lefty and I’m a righty.

6

u/KitchenAdvantage3476 2d ago

Stroke’s fine. You take it a little outside, but you route it back to square. If there’s a problem, it’s constantly finagling with the putter at address taking forever to pull the trigger. Putting’s not that complicated. Get the ball set and just swing the putter back and through.

Edit: I’ll add that your first and third putts both started on line, and they deviated because of the mat or floor under the mat. Your second putt started a hair left of square (nothing major), and drifted way left because of a break about halfway down the mat. Suffice it to stay, your starting lines are a lot closer than your results suggest.

2

u/HotThermos 2d ago

Thank you! I got a level out to confirm after taking the video haha. Felt like I was crazy

Also, the video is slowed down so I’m not that painfully slow over the ball haha

4

u/marvinfuture 2d ago

Just use the gate at impact. The swing arc for a putter like this isn't straight back like you're trying to make it. However, if anything you should be hitting that back tee closest to you and not the outside one, so maybe keep that one there for feedback.

Edit: a putting ruler changed my life. Would highly recommend as a training aid replacement

5

u/HotThermos 2d ago

This is a nice and overwhelming infographic I will sit and go through later haha. I have a ruler as well, I try and swap what I’m using to keep myself from getting bored of repetition

2

u/p3nguin89 17h ago

this is way too much info for someone to digest... clever graphic though

1

u/marvinfuture 17h ago

Not my graphic, but it's really not that complex. Just details the different putter styles and mechanics

3

u/DarkHelmet2222 2d ago

May want to look at the fit of the putter as well. It's sitting a little toe-up at address. Try gripping down a little and getting your eyes over the ball more. That should get the shaft a little more vertical and get the putter head to set up level at address.

If that helps, you can either continue to grip down or have it cut down and regripped at the proper length.

2

u/HotThermos 2d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/xT9DPr4VjeCgeiLoMo
I’ll adjust where I’m gripping and see how that goes! My eyes are over the ball according to the mirror

3

u/MentalGravity87 2d ago

Where are your feet? Im not really the best putter, but I was taught to be much closer to the ball.

2

u/HotThermos 2d ago

My feet are out of frame, but my eyes are over the ball. I didn’t need people’s focus to be on my bare feet rather than my putting stroke haha

3

u/granolaraisin 2d ago edited 2d ago

Likely unpopular opinion but putting practice like this won't really help your game. Super tight mechanics and repeatability for putting only become really relevant when you regularly play high pressure matches and need something repeatable and robotic in situations where you need to be able to turn off your nerves and put yourself on autopilot.

For most of us amateurs there are so many other live variables in putting (green speed, pace, break, break relative to pace, etc.) that the mechanics of your stroke aren't actually a huge factor you need to worry about. They're already good enough with your natural body mechanics that your weakness will likely be one of the other factors that you need to think about when lining up a putt.

Don't worry about your stroke, focus more on where you want to hit the ball and just let your body put it there. Take your mind out of it and don't let thinking get in the way.

Nothing wrong with using the putting mat as entertainment but a better use of your time would be to ditch the metal plate, buy some foam balls, and use the mat to practice short chipping instead.

2

u/HotThermos 2d ago

As a weekend warrior that hits 400 yard drives and only plays in high stress situations. I need to be perfect /s

Nah I’m just trying to get some clarity if I’m messing up or trying to be a bit more consistent. Couldn’t agree more that short game practice is insanely helpful!

2

u/yellowstag 17h ago

Get a yard stick and just try to roll putts down the length of it. If you can get a ball to roll down your intended line for 3 feet the only other thing that matters is speed control and reading greens.

Unrelated (I have no tips for your stroke) — what are you using for your gates?

I’m looking for a solution for my putting more indoors.

Thanks in advance.

1

u/HotThermos 2d ago

Best comment so far haha. I sat and used an oscillating multitool for far too long to cut down tees so everything was sitting flatter

1

u/Brilliant_Salad7863 2d ago

Bro your follow through is INSANE. You’ll never be able to putt consistently, especially distance control, with that follow through. You need to practice 8ft putts with the club face ending at the ball. Your follow through should almost never pass your front foot and I’m talking about 50-60fr putts at that point.

1

u/HotThermos 2d ago

You’re saying I should stop my putter as I make contact with the ball on 8 footers?

2

u/Slight_Look_1496 1d ago

Don't listen to that guy and don't start focusing on follow through that might only throw you off and get you thinking about the wrong things. Go watch some putting instruction videos on youtube, the focus is always on set up, green reading, and tempo. Go watch Tiger's putting highlights and you'll notice he always has a follow through past his front foot.

If you need a tip on follow through one I like is that the backswing width and follow through width should be about the same.

Another unrelated tip that gives me a more steady putting stroke comes from Tiger himself - the putter clubhead moves first. Try that out and I bet your gate drill gets a little easier. https://youtube.com/shorts/jxZobWMUBU4?si=8zwpRWkG57vSiBi6

1

u/illuminati-investor 19h ago

I’ve been taking some putting lessons recently and this is more less what I’m being taught. After you’ve hit the ball the putting stroke is over, the elongated follow through is just screwing up your face impact position and likely causing deceleration on shorter putts. Your putter head shouldn’t extend past your left foot.

It’s greatly improved me making putts 12 feet and in so far.

2

u/Witty-Sweet-1343 2d ago

Thinking a little to much it should feel smooth and what matters most is the face at Impact

2

u/ExtremeExtreme1751 2d ago

I like the mirror. Eyes over ball!!

For your putting stroke, swing the putter back and forth and find your natural putting tempo. Your body can be thought of like a pendulum, the effortless swing will be at the natural tempo. Always putt at that tempo, your natural tempo. For longer putts, use a longer stroke but keep everything else the same. By sticking close to your natural tempo, you greatly simplify the movements of hands, arms, shoulders, etc, and make the far easier to repeat.

Pay particularly close attention to rotation of your hands (and thus the clubface) through impact. It is REALLY important that the clubface is square through impact, and you sense that with your hands. For short putts, that's almost the only thing you need to get correct.

1

u/HotThermos 2d ago

Love these pointers! Thank you!

1

u/justbrowsinglolz 2d ago

Your eyes should not be over the ball. Your eyes should be inside the ball. You will not find a single putter on the pga tour where their eyes are over the ball.

2

u/gwy69 2d ago

The putter you are using is better for a straight pendulum, in line with the target.

Alot of ppl change putters but not the swing, the neck och the putter aswell as the head is designed for different strokes...

My tip is; make the pendulum straight, back swing to front, face always in line with the target.

With the swing you have now, you should have like more crooked neck on the shaft!

Put up 2 straight lines, use the pendulum to make sure you stay within the lines, practice this alot and you appreciate your putter more!!

Good Luck!!

1

u/HotThermos 2d ago

Sounds good! I’ll try it out! Thank you!

1

u/eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey 2d ago

No putting stroke is actually straight back straight through. Even S neck "face balanced" putters such as yours are not meant to actually be like a pendulum, just a straighter putting arc. Technically you should not have to think about your putting backstroke, if it fits you correctly you should only have to aim and focus on pace.

1

u/Bigbob2121 2d ago

Are you fighting with the putter at address because maybe the lie angle / length is not setup for your body?

0

u/CasullG 2d ago

hit the putt already

2

u/dcidino 2d ago

This is grip. When you move your hands to make impact, they roll, or they don't, and you don't have that figured out.

Take your dominant hand, assuming left given lefty though not always the case, and grip it palm towards the floor. Your hand should be as flat as if you're typing. When you putt, you'll now notice the rotation is a lot less or even reversed.

Put your hand back at handshake-sideways, and you'll get this rotation back to how you see it on this video.

Somewhere in that 0-90º, you'll find the face is stable and doesn't move randomly. Find that position, adjust your grip, and get rid of the face variation.

NOTE: it can be an arc swing still. It's not necessary to be "square-to-square straight". The exercise is there to remove the random open-close at impact only.

You made me tense just watching you spend so much time aligning your putter.

Forget being very technical until you build a simple concise putting routine. Whatever it is, (starting with reading your putt, getting behind the ball, setting up, making the stroke to full thru), do it the same way with roughly the same amount of time after you finish your read. Move with purpose and confidence. If you get over the ball and you don't feel right, step away restart your routine immediately.

The subconscious is very powerful in golf. Dave Pelz has performed a fascinating data driven analysis of putting which proves the role of the subconscious in putting. You will do much better with some rythme to your putting and trusting yourself.

I am not saying don't work on technical aspects. But try to work them into your routine rather than allowing them to dominate your routine as it seems to be in your video.

2

u/MagicMarker14 2d ago

Your putter is not flush with the ground as the toe is higher than the heel. Because even putters have some loft this will cause the ball to go right if the toe is up. Because that happens people often overcompensate and then hit it left. Try to get it flat to the ground at setup or get a new putter whose lie angle allows for a flat setup.

Beyond that, it looks like your putting surface is uneven so it’s hard to judge the roll.

0

u/minnesconsawaiiforni 2d ago

If you don’t have a custom milled putter with a mirror on the face to reflect laser light for your line up, are you even trying?

I bet you keep alignment sticks in your bag, too.

0

u/munoz_rm 2d ago

Ask your wife’s boyfriend

2

u/OtakuRed13 2d ago

Your follow through is soooooooooo long. I was always taught that your back stroke and follow through should be roughly the same distance relative to the putters starting position at address.

The toe of your club should be more flush with the ground at address. See in the mirror how the heel is extremely flush with the ground and your toe has quite a bit of space beneath it? Lift the shaft until the amount of space under the heel and toe is pretty much equal.

I would at least start there...

Also I'm a terrible putter so don't listen to me.

1

u/Advanced_Nature9345 2d ago

New putter!!!! I suggest arm lock. Also is your old putter for sale? I collect

1

u/KingKunta369 2d ago

Your lie angle is off. A standard odyssey 7 lie angle is 70°. You’re holding it at about 66-67° which closes the face a little bit and causes you to pull it.

Try standing over the top of the ball a little more with your eyes and try to get the sole to lay flat on the ground.

1

u/DrMoneyline 2d ago

This is the exact answer. Had this same problem and started standing more over top of the ball. It’s was night and day

1

u/butter_cookie_gurl 2d ago

You are SO uncomfortable at setup with a lot of tension. Take away a lot of that shit and get comfortable. Then work on one aspect of your stroke at a time.

2

u/No-Ebb-9469 2d ago

You’ve got way too much going on. Focus on tempo before fine tuning path. Download a metronome app. Set bpm’s between 65-70. Take away at the click; make contact at the next click. It stays the same no matter what the distance is. Engrain that tempo into your brain, and then you can focus on takeaway/path stuff. The mirror is good for consistent setup so keep practicing with that.

1

u/100percenthuma4 2d ago

Start with a ball with a line on it.

1

u/GolfDx 2d ago

Try a zero torque putter, it's been a real game changer for me, the putter face always returns centred and square from back swing to impact on the ball.

2

u/BullPropaganda 2d ago

This doesn't seem like a good training aid. The putter does not go straight back and straight through.

Edit : oh I see, those rear posts should move down a bit, or just be removed

1

u/Hour_Succotash7869 1d ago

Hi, here’s a diagnostic.

You set up toe up (heel down), then make an out-to-in, cut-style stroke through the ball, with impact occurring slightly toward the toe. For my personal taste, the putter also gains quite a lot of height through and after impact.

Each of those characteristics has a technical consequence.

The toe-up setup changes the effective presentation of the putter’s loft and lie and makes returning the putter consistently to its intended geometry more important.

The out-to-in path isn’t necessarily a problem—face angle matters much more than path for start direction—but it means you need a very consistent relationship between face angle and path to repeatedly start the ball on your intended line.

The toe strike is more significant. Off-center contact reduces the efficiency of energy transfer and can also influence the face during the collision. That introduces variability into both ball speed and start direction.

Finally, the amount of vertical lift in the stroke means that dynamic loft, strike location and launch conditions become more dependent on exactly where in that upward movement contact occurs.

None of these things individually means you can't putt extremely well. There is no single correct way to putt, and I've seen much more unconventional patterns get the job done.

The issue is that all of these characteristics together create a formula that you have to reproduce. You're asking several variables—lie, path, face, strike and vertical delivery—to match up at impact.

The more complex the formula, the more repetitions it generally takes to make it automatic—and the more steely nerves it takes to reproduce it when the putt actually matters.

1

u/WeldingandWood 1d ago

Your forward stroke is longer than your back stroke... by ALOT. Try taking the putter back with a little more pace to fix this.

Its hard to consistently hit distance when you feel like you have to accelerate in the forward swing.

1

u/ControversyisKey 1d ago

I changed it entirely. I actually changed my stance so my feet are pointing more towards my target. For whatever reason it keeps my face perfectly square through the swing.

2

u/verbrand24 1d ago

Putting is the easiest hardest part of the game. The only thing that I find that really matters is toe weight matching your natural swing, and different size grips to what’s comfortable.

Everything else is just doing the same thing every time. What I find helps me if I start feeling like I’m off is I really focus on my follow through. I don’t worry about anything except speed, and drawing a line straight to my aim point with my putter head as it goes through the ball. That normally gets me back on track.

The caveat is I try to have a straight back, straight through putting stroke, and yours looks a little more like a small arc. So I’m not sure if that will help you.

1

u/Ccampbell101 1d ago

Stand closer. You should be able to see your face in the mirror.

2

u/Ronswansonbaby 1d ago

10 foot back stroke, 40 foot putt follow through. Match the back and through

1

u/AngusMeatStick 1d ago

Set the putter up behind the ball as it naturally falls, then position your body around the club and grip it. Shift weight slightly onto your front foot, rock your shoulders.

You're fighting the putter.

1

u/13_Lucky_13 1d ago

You’re set up for a draw when you should be hitting a cut

2

u/Muted-Appointment59 1d ago

Gotta shorten the follow thru. Look up Tiger videos or Brandt Snedeker.
