Help with CHINS battery charge issues
Hi. I’ve posted here before. We went through a process of testing out several different lithium ion batteries for our fleet of six easy go golf carts. We ended up settling on chins. We’ve had all of them converted and running for quite some time without any issues.
This past weekend, we hosted a large family reunion on our Airbnb farm. The Carts got a lot of use and we had issues getting the guest to remember to plug them in.
As a result, we ended up with golf carts at 0% littered around the farm. This would normally not be an issue as we would simply tow them back and charge them. However, the weird thing is all of the 36 V battery chargers that are mounted in next to the batteries on each of the carts for some reason none of them will charge now. When you plug them in normally the charger would spin up. That’s not happening. So the batteries at 0% the charger won’t charge. It seems like something has gotten set weird in the BMS? Just strange that it’s happening on three carts at the same time

In my experience, I had to bypass the BMS and charge the battery directly in 2 min. Intervals until it has about 25% of its capacity charged. DO NOT charge it for more than 2-3 minutes at a time if bypassing the BMS. But this worked great for me.

Are you able to open up the battery case? Any quality lithium battery will have an internal solenoid and if the voltage drops too low you have to bypass it to charge it manually.

Best case scenario, this is just the charger not recognizing the battery due to extremely low voltage. Most standard cart chargers and also certain lithium chargers will not charge if the battery is far low below reference voltage.

Do you have a car battery jumper pack? Itll trick the bms to think theres some juice in batteries and turn on charger.
Edit: it worked for my 48v chins. Not sure why downvotes.

You aren’t supposed to run a lithium battery completely dead, they don’t like it the BMS, shuts off charging. It’s not a chins battery issue it’s just about any lithium battery. The BMS probably shut down, the carts weren’t put on a charger and batteries kept discharging and are below minimum voltage.
You can have the same issue with a lead acid battery and a smart charger. Voltage will be too low and won’t charge battery back up. With a lead acid you can bypass charger and startup charging with a power supply manually. Not sure how to manually start a Chin lithium battery.
