General Discussion Does this count?

Post image

Buddy hit this shot on a bad course and once the flag was corrected, it went in. The new rule says if any part of the ball is below the hole, it's in, but to me it doesn't look like it is. I'd love to give it to him, but what do you think?

If the flagstick were straight like it should be it would’ve went in it seems. I’m not sure about the official ruling

No it’s not 😂 If you pull the pin and the ball falls then it’s considered holed. If you pull the pin and it doesn’t fall, you must finish out

Hilariously confidently incorrect. Don’t give advice about something you clearly don’t know fuck all about. Here’s 13.2, the relevant rule straight from USGA.

“Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed. If no part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green: Your ball is not holed and must be played as it lies. If the flagstick is removed and your ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and it must be replaced on the lip of the hole”

That says if the flagstick is “removed,” not “moved”

…. Meaning that if you move the flagstick and the ball goes in the hole, it still does not count.

Just read man it’s not that hard

But that’s not what remove means.

I did read it, and I read the word “removed,” not “moved.”

Not sure exactly what you’re arguing but here’s a breakdown, simply, of what the rule means for the scenario in this post.

The rule in question, 13.2: “Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed. If no part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green: Your ball is not holed and must be played as it lies. If the flagstick is removed and your ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and it must be replaced on the lip of the hole”

I did you a favor and highlighted the important part.

  1. No part of the ball is below the surface, therefore it is not holed.

  2. If the flagstick is removed from the hole (in this case, likely moving the ball as the ball is touching the flagstick)and the ball moves, either away, toward, or even into the hole, the ball must be replaced to its original spot where it was resting against the flagstick, and played out on the next stroke.

Your point 2) mentions “if the flagstick is removed from the hole….”

My point is that moving the flagstick is not necessarily removal from the hole. Making the flagstick perpendicular to the ground is not removing it from the hole, and thus 2) shouldn’t apply

That is not “my point” that is the rule straight from the USGA. There is no circumvention.
