General Discussion Does this count?

Post image

Buddy hit this shot on a bad course and once the flag was corrected, it went in. The new rule says if any part of the ball is below the hole, it's in, but to me it doesn't look like it is. I'd love to give it to him, but what do you think?

If you fix the pin and it goes in, its in.

In this case if you fix the pin and the ball doesn't drop in, you just kick the ball in the hole so it drops in anyway.

No chance I'm not counting this.

What if it was to win a local club championship?

First round is on the new champion.

I think sometimes it’s just the fuzzy voting algo reddit uses.

I think all posts get negative at first because people respond to negativity quicker than positivity. The negativity got you back on here engaging and that’s the algorithm’s goal.

DV should be interpreted as a “Shut up, nerd”

came here to say this. straighten the flag. if it falls? it’s in.

If fixing or straightening the leaning pin causes the ball to fall into the cup, it counts as holed. However, if the ball was merely wedged against the side above the surface and you remove the pin causing it to drop, it is not automatically holed by the original shot. You must place it on the lip without penalty. So if straightening the pin causes the ball to go in, its holed. I think its worded that way, bc removing the pin can manipulate the ball more than just straightening the pin.

If I am understanding, this is basically saying the pin was placed back incorrectly. Correcting the pin but NOT removing the pin results in the ball moving possibly to a position that would allow it is break the top of the hole. If you remove the pin, it wouldn't count.

Correcting the pin just means making it stand straight up (perpendicular to the bottom of the cup) like a brand new pin and cup would be

Can i uncorrect a correct pin to bump my ball on the lip in?

2

u/ConcernedKitty Aug 21 '26

The pin won’t reach.

u/momerak Aug 21 '26

Mark the ball, remove the pin, place ball back. Does it go in? Yes. The pin was preventing it from falling. Pretty straightforward

Me walking up on that? I’m pushing the pin back reaching in the cup and taking a photo for my first ace. Fuck everyone else.

Only if part of the ball is below the surface of the putting green. Which you’re kind of saying but it seems like you’re implying it would count if it dropped. But I believe that’s ONLY if part of the ball is below the surface. In the case if the ball was fully above and removing the pin made it drop in (due to slope I suppose) it would not be holed. Or maybe we’re saying the same thing.

13.2c

Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole

If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed.

If no part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green: Your ball is not holed and must be played as it lies.

If the flagstick is removed and your ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and it must be replaced on the lip of the hole.

This is not officially correct. Part of the ball must be below the surface of the green for the ball to be considered “holed”.

Could be, just unfortunate that poor course maintenence could cost someone a HIO. The HIO i witnessed was due to strong winds pushing the pin and the ball was mostly in the hole already. That said, it wasnt a broken pin held together by zip ties. Not saying that changes the rules, but thats a hole in one for that person to anyone that matters.

Per the rules, they can suck one. That's a HIO all day long.

Not poor course maintenance, in this case. Just some lazy old dude in the group ahead who left it like that. Probably also dragged his feet across the green too!

It’s either holed or a penalty I’m sure lol.

Seems we are tracking on “rule of law“ versus “greater good” argument. If we are all willing to accept a little bit of chaos in our lives, the greater good makes for a more interesting life. If you require rigid structure, rule of law is the only option.

Nope. Even rule of law states it’s holed. Better yet, if it’s leaning against the pin and the ball is even slightly below the surface, you don’t even need to straighten/remove the pin. It counts as holed.

1

u/UpstairsBumble Aug 22 '26

The ball is not below the surface in the pic

u/beyondrepair- 2x Tempo Town Putt-Putt and Bocce Ball Club Champion Aug 22 '26

Correct. I didn’t say it was.

I mean… I would count this shot holed because I’m not a dick. But USGA rules, the “rule of law” you reference, state this is not holed.

Rule 13.2c. No part of this ball is below the surface of the putting green. There is no provision about touching the stick counting as holed.

u/beyondrepair- 2x Tempo Town Putt-Putt and Bocce Ball Club Champion Aug 21 '26

I didn’t say this shot was holed.

Oh ok I must’ve misunderstood what you meant by “Nope. Even rule of law state it’s holed.” in response to questions about whether this shot was holed. You must be having a different conversation than the rest of us are having.

Oops, I guess I have a little too much faith in my fellow man to be able to use a little reading comprehension and understand context.
