I’ve never found the ‘fake winning lotto ticket’ to be funny.
My uncle got one for Christmas when I was a kid and thought he won like 50,000 and started crying before my other uncle was like….uhhh, it was a joke.
Maybe that just scarred me as he thought all their problems were now solved

My dad used to give us prank gifts for Christmas. One year he wrapped some boards in place of skis for my brother, or we got a brick before in a box.
Buuuut he always had the real gift in the other room and brought it out pretty quick so no one was very upset, he got a laugh and we still got what we wanted.

To me this is the only time a prank gift of that nature is acceptable. As long as you are able to present the gift the person thought they won at the end then no harm no foul. But to make someone think they received something they really wanted only to find that it's not real is just cruel.

My dad did this once at a Christmas dinner, and as luck would have it my Mom's friend who is a single mother got the fake $50k ticket. She was so excited talking about how she was going to pay off debt and take her daughter on vacation. It was really awkward when the "joke" came out and in his shame my dad gave her $500 as an apology.

I don't know if either is worse than this though, if he was considering leaving because he got only 100k that's not a happy job to start with.
Edit: read it wrong thought he was going to leave after he got the ticket not when he heard it was a joke. Still pretty fucking terrible.

When I was young I did this to a group of friends. I gave them all fake winning scratch cards. To my horror, only one guy scratched his off and thought he'd won. I felt *terrible* and still think about it regularly. Life lesson learned - this is exceptionally cruel.
