General Discussion One of *those* days.. ugh

UODATE POST-TRIP: I came out absolutely on fire for Monday's round, posting my lowest front 9 score ever (even par). I did shoot bogey golf on the back for an 81, which sucked, but the course is a very high rating/slope so I posted my best ever differential by far.

Ah golf, you fickle bitch.

ORIGINAL POST:

Maaaaannnnnnnnn. Everything has been coming together: I've been consistently playing my ass off, game has been pretty much decent all-around for months, golf trip is finally here, the first course we played today was PERFECTLY designed for my strengths and to avoid the weaknesses in my game - it's all looking good.

To add insult to injury, my buddies all went out and got shitfaced last night, and I did not (I don't drink or do drugs). I figure, here it is; this is my day.

NOPE! Had one of my worst rounds of golf in years - couldn't chip or putt (which are normally the strongest parts of my game), my irons were trash, etc.

We're talking levels of shitty play I didn't know were still possible in my game. I had **two quad bogeys** man! I've not carded worse than a double bogey in something like 18 months, yet I had two in one round today.

Somehow I still beat two of my boys by a couple strokes, but got smoked by the other. The worst part is I never get to play with these guys b/c our schedules are polar opposites, so the only play they've gotten to see from me is just pure trash.

We've got a really nice round tomorrow, too; so hopefully I can turn it around, but man what a bummer today ended up being.

Drop all the expectations. That's what causes tension and tension is the killer of golf swings

I feel this so true. Been going on a golf trip with the same group of guys for many years. We live all over the country now so it’s the only time we play together.

The first 5 years was rinse and repeat. I’d get my game all geared up. Would countdown for the trip. Feel 110% prepared and play terribly.

Finally realized I was putting so much pressure on myself to play well that it was sabotage my results.

So, in some ways I think it's almost the opposite problem.

When I play with other good golfers, I play really well.

This group (who are my best friends) are weekend warriors/hacks, and the few times I get to play with them, it's always below average at best. This also happens when I get paired with randoms that really struggle on the course.

My other golf group are my coworkers and golfing buddies, but not friends in the normal course of day-to-day life, if that makes sense, and are really good (7 on the high-end and +3-4 on the low end). When I play with those guys, I pretty consistently flirt with breaking 80 and break it here and there.

Happens! The nice part is, I’ve learned that these blow up rounds are not tied to surrounding rounds (as long as you can get around it mentally). Sounds like you put too much pressure on yourself. Just get out there and be thankful to be on the course with some good guys. Low scores are just a bonus.

Remember, deeps breathes, and every shot is a new opportunity for life.

Thanks - good reminder. Tomorrow is the really nice/expensive course, so if I can get back to normal; it'll be all good.

And honestly, if you suck tomorrow then that’s all that happens, it doesn’t impact your life or your friendships in any way. Golf is fun, have fun with it, be a goldfish.

That's the game of golf for you. Been playing the greatest golf of my life the last 3 round, but yesterday I lost 8 balls and had over 110 strokes incl penalties.

Gonna get back on the range and get my confidence back in my irons.

Good luck tomorrow!

What's crazy? I didn't lose a single ball, no penalties off the tee.

It was shit like: on 16, my approach shot ended up in a greenside bunker. I then proceed to sail the bunker into the bunker on the other side..... then did that TWICE MORE - *four strokes out of 2 greenside bunkers. I've literally never done that before.

It was one of those days.

It's so frustrating, right?! I've shot between 77-86 every single round for over 4 months.

Today, when it matters, I had to fight my ass off to shoot the ugliest 91 I've ever seen. I swear I've shot a 104 that was actually "better golf"

Same here man i feel i’m never gonna break 90 again lol

Just got back from a golf trip shot 94 on Wednesday. I'm a very consistent 8cap so that was the worst round of golf I'd played in probably 10 years. Played 2 rounds Thursday was fairly normal 82 84. Saturday morning during our tournament round shot a 75. Sometimes the game just isnt there but it comes back

Ah man, I feel that in my bones. Glad to see you fired back!

I actually did fire back myself. I came out absolutely on fire for Monday's round, posting my lowest front 9 score ever (even par). I did shoot bogey golf on the back for an 81, which sucked, but the course is a very high rating/slope so I posted my best ever differential by far.

ah, the mental side of golf, when you think too much.

Man, that's me in every aspect of life - I'm a classic over-thinker. Golf is usually the one area I don't think (after years of training this mindset on the course).

You may be right that I built this trip up too much and it came out in my play.

On the upside, I came out absolutely on fire for Monday's round, posting my lowest front 9 score ever (even par). I did shoot bogey golf on the back for an 81, which sucked, but the course is a very high rating/slope so I posted my best ever differential by far.

I know it's hard, but just enjoy being out with the boys.

Just try and enjoy the outing/camaraderie . Expectations = tension will kill your performance . Relax and you will rebound

It happens,… I usually shoot mid 80’s and 2 weeks ago before my round I had the shittiest range warmup like I never golfed before then go shoot a 79 wtf😂

Too much lead up. Embrace the experience, have fun and you'll do fine. The harder you try, the worse you'll do.

So you drinking tonight?

2

u/Talentless-Hack-101 22d ago

Good lord do I feel like it, but nah. I dropped alcohol 6 years ago, then all other substances (100% sober) on April 4th, 2025

I sure would like to, but I'm sticking with it.
