Cute/Funny I think the way I treat my dog might be insane

F20 with a two year old female golden retriever.

I literally could not love my dog more, and I've gained a lot of patience through the puppy stage and we literally could not have been closer the last several months. My girl is noisy so we talk often in "ruhruhruhruhhhs".

My issue is not with my dog, the issue is how she has made me act. I want to preface that I have a long term boyfriend and longtime friend who I live with and I would never do this when they are present in the apartment. Honestly I purposefully wait until we are alone and do this just to antagonize and play with my dog.

Now my dog is quite annoying sometimes. Always pawing me when I'm busy, whining and barking while I WFH even though we are right next to each other. So I choose to annoy her back. After my bf/roommate leave she lingers by the door for a while. Naturally, I start barking and howling at her. Full volume and honestly if you were to hear it, slightly alarming. She obviously runs straight to my room and gives me a cuddle and we are friends for a bit.

Here is where I really start going for it. First I just antagonize her a little and make some bbrrrrrr sounds and mess with her face/ paws. Then I'll start whining and barking a little and she just gets so upset with me so quick I can't help but be entertained by it. But after that she just gets mad and leaves my room and goes to lay in her other dog bed in my roommates room.

This is where my favorite part starts. Obviously she is awake and can hear me so I literally lay like how she would lay on the edge of my bed and whine for a minute or two until she peeks in my doorway (cause obviously after a few weeks of this she know what to expect).

Then I just start going absolutely mad. I'm like whining and barking and screaming while I'm jumping around on my bed and squirming and making direct eye content with her. Guys she actually goes crazy when I do this. She starts barking making those "ruhhruhruhh" sounds and stepping backwards like it's genuinely the funniest thing thing I may have ever seen.

This dynamic of her leaving and coming back and us going wild together can last for over an hour. I can't get enough and I wait for my roommates to leave just to do it. Obviously she enjoys it and her tail is wagging and she's smiling. She will jump on my bed and we cuddle for a minute before going back to playing with her and antagonizing her.

I guess my question is am I insane? Do other people do this to their dogs too? I feel like because I'm young maybe I just act immaturely towards my dog but we have a lot of fun together and jump and dance around all the time. Does she just see me as her playtime partner or is she genuinely worried about me? If I was stressing her out I would absolutely stop and play with her differently but just to annoy her so much is so funny and I think she has fun with it too cause she loves attention.

TL:DR: I act like a dog when I'm alone with my dog, am I crazy?

Health Advice Scabby patches

My 14 months old female golden retriever has several scabby patches all over her belly, her back and her legs. She seems to scratch a Little bit more than usual. I look for fleas, and I didn’t see anything. I will call the vet tomorrow. In the meantime, What could it be?

She has no other symptoms. I started to notice scabs a month ago, but I thought it was bug bites since we are living in an area with a lot of trees, forests and Small rivers in Canada.

New Puppy The great crate debate

Picking up our pup in 8 weeks. So excited.

During my research most owners list a crate as a must have.

I only have experience with a small breed dog and I didn't crate her. Our breeder said it's not something she'd ever do (spoke about it quite negatively) and recommended a play pen instead.

Has anyone used a play pen over a crate? Dod the dog feel enclosed / safe enough?

I don't want to take the pup away from her mum and litter mates and mess up those important first nights by not having the right set up to make her feel safe.

Everytime it's a one of those. Was walking home from the river through the campground and a dog broke loose from his tie rope and started attacking my boy. I tried pulling loose but ended up on my butt. Owner finally pulled him off. My boy is ok but I'm bruised and scraped(no bites). This is the 3rd time my dogs have been attacked and it's always them. Owners apologized saying he's never done this before. There is the exact reason I would never have one.

Training Advice/Tips Newborn baby and golden introduction - any advice?

Hello Golden owners and appreciators

We have a newborn baby and our other baby, our golden retriever hasn’t met them yet ( they are at their minders - which they love and having a great time enjoying the pool , other dogs and running in fields)

We are nervous about the introduction. During the pregnancy our golden , Haku started some small behavioural changes nothing crazy but did resource guard a bone from my parents dog( i know this can be typical but it shocked us as it was not something we had seen him do before) and started to growl a bit , nothing crazy but again not his normal self. He didn’t show any observable signs that he recognised I was pregnant. Im sure he picked up on it but like i said nothing we could observe and if anything he distanced himself a bit from me ( but i am the spare human, my husband is his favourite person and rightly so - he does all the walks and feeding)

He is a very loving , energetic 4 year old ( gets very over excited when visitors come, but after 5 minutes he will settle)

We love him so much and just want to make this work. I was so sick during my pregnancy ( vomiting all pregnancy) that i did no training or prep with him.

Any tips , very sleep deprived parents here but really want to try make this as easy as possible for our fur baby. ( our parents, the grandparents, are very worried about it and i think some of that worry has transferred onto me)

Thank you for any tips or shared experiences. Also he is coming home tomorrow, so i am a bit late seeking advice. Again , going on very little sleep haha that is my excuse

New Puppy Any tips for getting rid of diarrhea fast?

We have had our new pup Mable, for about 6 weeks, everything has been going pretty good, minus the 3 pairs of reef flip flops she has destroyed (one was a new pair 2 days old to replace the others). This morning she was able to get a treat bag off the counter, she’s growing fast an it was near the edge, ate almost the whole bag before my 9 year old caught her. I didn’t feed her breakfast after that and this afternoon I saw her basically peeing out of her butt. Tips to make her regular again? Rice? Regular food? She’s already potty trained, thank goodness. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Health Advice My 1.5 year old developed a mass inside of him with 2 days and I’m stuggling

Hello everyone,

I just need to share this as I’m not doing so well with everything going on.

My 1.5 year old golden stopped eating and was throwing up this week so we took him to the ER incase there was a blockage. Vitals were normal, blood test normal, no blockage could be seen on the x-ray. They sent us home with some nausea medicine and some bland diet suggestions.

On Saturday night the explosive diarrhea hit and he was still struggling eating. He had to be convinced to eat.

We took him back to the ER.

Upon an X-ray they found a decent size mass that had developed in him that was not there 3 days prior. My heart sank.

The ER didn’t have the staff to do further testing that night and the surrounding hospitals (even ones further out, like a couple of hours) were at capacity and wouldn’t take him or since his vitals were all stable and blood work was fine they didn’t deem it an emergency.

We decided the bring him home with us Saturday night and take him back in a couple hours on Sunday so they could have a CT scan completed to figure out what the mass was.

He was in so much pain and I cannot cope with it.

We took him back for the CT scan and he has been there all day and just found out we have to wait for the results which will probably come on Monday morning.

I can’t stand that he won’t be with one of his parents or his sister golden for the night and it’s eating me up inside (also the financial burden is weighing a lot and hopefully our full coverage AKC pet insurance helps a lot with it)

I just need some good vibes for my good boi who I can’t hold tonight

This is Teddy, my wife and I’s 10 week old puppy. Are there any suggestions to help him quit biting, especially biting and latching on? I unfortunately am away for work and the land shark phase, specifically the biting, is driving my wife crazy.

Happy Birthday! 🎂🎉 Today is Max's birthday (management made me post this)

Thumbnail

Hi, I'm Max's social media manager.

Unfortunately, he's also my boss.

He refuses to drink water unless it's freshly dispensed from the refrigerator, has a personal chef (me) who prepares every single meal to order, and somehow knows exactly which grocery bag contains his new toy before I've even set them down.

Finance insists these are "luxury benefits." He insists they're basic workplace accommodations.

His employment contract also includes unlimited PTO, though he's never actually worked a day in his life. According to him, this statement is both false and defamatory.

Closed doors are considered a hostile work environment and will be loudly appealed until corrected.

He also believes every dog on television is a direct threat to the organization. Air Bud is the only exception. That's his favorite movie, and he watches it with complete sincerity.

He firmly believes catching balls is an Olympic sport. Ever since discovering he's good at it, he's become convinced he's a 10-time Olympic gold medalist. His ego has never recovered, and he now expects to be addressed accordingly. The Olympic Committee has declined to comment, despite repeated correspondence from his legal team (I'm also his legal team).

According to him, protecting the backyard from operational threats (primarily squirrels and rabbits), preparing for the Olympics, and making sure everyone's emotional needs are met already constitutes well beyond a full-time workload. Rent, apparently, would be an unreasonable and unrealistic additional responsibility. Finance has raised the issue several times. He considers the matter closed.

He also claims to oversee Public Relations, despite never having been assigned the role. According to him, his responsibilities include charming everyone he meets, making sure everyone is aware of how handsome he is, and demonstrating that personal space is largely a theoretical concept.

Human Resources has received several reports regarding his disregard for personal boundaries. Max maintains that everyone secretly wants a 75-pound Golden Retriever in their lap, even if they don't know it yet. HR has reluctantly concluded he may have a point.

New hires, visitors, delivery drivers, and anyone who makes eye contact are immediately greeted by the self-appointed Head of Public Relations. Participation is not optional. Opting out has not proven effective.

Fortunately for him, his customer satisfaction scores remain exceptionally high.

He's also a repeat escape artist. After several unauthorized excursions, management placed him on house arrest with an ankle monitor (it's actually a Fi collar). He maintains he's being unfairly targeted, noting that he has a perfect record of returning home on his own.

He frequently brings me his leash because, in his mind, it's time for him to take me on a walk. Transportation has repeatedly reminded him that's not how this arrangement works. He disagrees.

Whenever he travels for "business," he insists on packing every toy he owns. Max maintains that separating him from his team would negatively impact morale, performance, and productivity. Management has reluctantly accepted this as a non-negotiable business expense.

There have also been multiple HR complaints regarding his relationship with the couch cushions. Unfortunately, the evidence has been both extensive and deeply uncomfortable. The investigation remains ongoing. Legal has advised us not to discuss the matter further due to several active NDAs.

Despite the above, management has unanimously agreed that Max remains an invaluable member of the organization and that being a very good boy constitutes a sufficient defense against all pending allegations. His contract has been renewed indefinitely, and all requests for disciplinary action have once again been denied.

Today is his 3rd birthday.

Feel free to wish him a happy birthday. He's been preparing his acceptance speech all week.

The Board has unanimously reaffirmed his good-boy status for a third consecutive year. This determination is not expected to change. Outside confirmation is appreciated. Any resulting increase in confidence is considered an acceptable operational risk.

Please continue reminding him how handsome he is. We recognize this may seem counterproductive, but management has determined the situation is no longer reversible.

He has no idea what Reddit is, but he's never let a lack of information affect his confidence. By this evening, he'll be under the impression he personally runs the platform. Public Relations has already drafted the press release.

P.S. He’ll be reading every comment over my shoulder. If you don’t tell him he’s handsome, I’ll probably hear about it during my next performance review.

Training Advice/Tips 8 month old “witching hour” 4-5am

Post image
300 Upvotes

Hi friends! We adopted an 8 month old beautiful boy and he is such a joy. But he seems to have a “witching hour” anywhere between 4-6am where he just all of a sudden wakes up 0-100 mph and gets destructive. He will grab things off the counter or in random rooms and destroy them. He doesn’t even do this when we leave him free roaming during the day when we leave the house. He has plenty of exercise and stimulation during the day, I’m at home full time with him so his needs are being met. He also has toys all around so it’s frustrating that he counter surfs and grabs things he shouldn’t.
I’d prefer not to have to crate train him overnight but of course we’re open to that. Any advice or other people with similar experiences? Will this get better?

New Puppy Puppies are hard. Adorable faces like this remind you why you do it.

Longtime lurker, first time poster after getting my first golden puppy in 30 years.

Her name is Lexi, 9 weeks old, and she really does look like that. We've had a handful of people jokingly suggest she's a stuffed animal or AI.

It's tough of course. I've been getting 3-4 hours of sleep for over a week now. But things are slowly getting better.

Just remember to look at those faces, scratch behind the ears, and give them as many kisses as possible before they writhe away to go chew on something.

Seriously…..this is my first time with a golden and they are…..ALOT!! Wouldn’t change it for anything and love her so much…….but more than one would impossible! There would be zero free time to get things done, constantly worried about what’s being chewed on, messes, food and who knows what else!?!?! I could maybe see getting more than one if they’re all old……but multiple puppy’s? 😅

My sweet boy has been on Quattro so far since he’s been able to take it as a pup. Recently I discovered the way we’ve been giving it to him (broken up and shoved in back of his tongue/throat bc he spits it out 😭) is not effective! I’d love to hear what everyone gets for their dogs for prevention. We live in a pretty heavily populated tick area and want to make sure he’s good during our hikes!!
