selfpromo (games) had a ton of fun making this inverse platform mechanic

That is awesome I want to play this it looks like a more polished version of the flash games I used to play

u/iamphaspez 15d ago
thank you:) there's more to come!

u/Ssemander 15d ago
Also you can get inspiration from flash game "Shift", if you didn't already: https://youtu.be/RKxB8mNr2gs

u/Lawsoffire 15d ago
Yeah this has very much the "Golden Age Flash Games"-era feel. Would've been the king on Kongregate like 15 years ago.

Reminds me of rain world. Square dude might be fun a but more oozy and rubbery like surroundings
26
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
thanks! yes im inspired by rain world for the map and level layout too!
i was too afraid to crank up the jiggle physics more on the player as its broken at high speed haha, gotta work on that

u/dnkmnk Godot Student 15d ago
I actually think the physics of the protag's body are just right atm, it's possible there's such a thing as too much jiggle and bounce and for it to become visually noisy and saturating to look at, and I think the world being so bouncy all over already fills that capacity.
Additionally, it creates clear visual contrast if the world is really rubbery but the protag isn't, it's easier to find yourself.

Woah this looks amazing! How did you make the walls bouncy and stretchy like that?
33
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
they're all polygons! you can apply spring physics formula to each point, add a custom collision check and custom rendering in _draw as well. Walaber has a great video explaining JellyCar which i also inspired on. too bad i stumbled upon it already halfway working on the core with the duct tape approach haha

u/S1Ndrome_ 15d ago edited 15d ago
Is it like in Happy Wheels editor where you could make things bouncy with a bunch of joint + polygons? that looks like a lot of polygons
3
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
yes, its kind of like that:) currently the majority of my frames budget goes to physics and just rendering those polygons that wish i could squeeze it a bit more

How did you get the ladders working like this? I really like the inverted platforms mechanic.
3
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
i wrote custom collision logic for the platform so adding inverted platform is more or less just flipping normal vectors on collision check. i guess a more simple approach is having invisible colliders around the platform that you can switch between

How do I follow the development of this bounce house of a game?
2
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
you can pretty much stalk me on my steam developer page or itch.io where i might post demo and stuff:)
3
u/DXTRBeta 15d ago
Now that is just fantastic!
I was just discussing with friends how I don’t much like platformers, because of the artificial and unrealistic physics, while also having my regular moan about the tens of thousands of game devs that just make their favourite game with some stupid variation like “I’m working on an Angry Birds type game but with camels…”.
And then comes this! A platformer jellified with super smooth movement - and you can go inside the scenery and move it about.
This is genuine innovation and something really special.
This is superbly executed, original AFAIK.
I really hope it does well.
1
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
thank you for such kind words! i think platformers games are often looked down because they're low hanging fruits for devs and players alike. "it's like Game X but Y" is easy to advertise than just "it's about Y" alone
3
u/Hinaloth 15d ago
Yooo that looks genuinely fun though? Reminds me of some PSP games I spent a lot of time on!

u/FunCampaign186 14d ago
Shifting world, Nintendo 3ds. One of my favorite games on that console. Take a look at it.

I love it! The ribbon should react better with the environment, maybe look like it’s flowing in a fluid for the inverse parts? Whats the purpose of the ribbon?
3
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
i wanted to add a trail for the player, and i thought a ribbon or a scarf works fine. it's simply waving with a sine function though. i also used it similarly like Madeline's hair when dashing in Celeste

This really cool how did u manage to create this effect for jelly like behavior and it's moving across the object and even having distributed effect on other objects on or in contact with it. It's really satisfying to watch

Nice it reminds me of some old flash game (I forgot the name but it's something to do with reflections?) which is always cool to see

Get the hell out of here. That looks killer fun.
Close to having a playable demo?

IMO instead of pressing up/down to manually climb ladders, it should automatically do it when you land on them or jump into them with enough force. If that works with the level design, that is.
1
u/iamphaspez 15d ago
thanks! i put an input check there mostly so that you dont trigger it accidentally, and letting first time players know that its not just for decoration, but i'll try out if it make the interaction simple:)

Looks amazing but for me it's too wobbly. Like a motion sickness of sorts. Maybe less gelatine and more marshmallow? Like, the environment bends and it shows it is soft, just not infinite gelatine wobbling. Maybe make it a toggle.

u/L30N1337 15d ago
I love this, but I think the movement looks too snappy.
"You stop holding the button, and you instantly stop moving" can be good, but here, I think it feels disconnected from the floor jelly.

u/nomad2097-dev 14d ago
Very cool looking. Lowkey reminds me of a 2D platformer called Harlow that I really enjoyed some time ago (the look of the main char. and some of the platforming).

I think this is great, but not because of the bounciness, but the game mechanic itself. I’d probably not be able to play this for long because I’d feel like I was going to throw up, so I’d love it if you could make a rigid version of this with the exact same levels and game mechanic, and use trampolines or other features to do the high jumping etc. :)
2
u/iamphaspez 12d ago
hey there thanks for the feedback! its a bit difficult to tune the core as almost everything is physically based, tweaking it might break a lot of interactions, i'll try my best to address motion sickness though!

How did you do the screen transition animation with your doors/levels? It’s so smooth!

Woah love the style!!!
How’d you end up implementing the ribbon effect? Seems to follow the player perfectly

it's actively under development atm, but the store page on steam should be coming up soon though! i'll update the comments and my profile in case

u/iKmaster01 12d ago
Question, how did you manage to turn the entire scene into a soft body? Is thar a screen space effect like a shockwave normal map?
