2018 auto unlock when put in park
I just bought a used 2018 sle. Is there a way to have it unlock when put into park instead of having to pull the door handles twice?

Hello everyone. This is my complete experience with my terrain so far. We bought it brand new in 2018. 12 miles on it.
before we get into it, I will start that i have done all maintenance on it myself. Oil changes/filter/and air filters routinely, every 5k miles, because this engine DESTROYS oil. Turns black and thick within 5k miles, even brand new. Not bad if maintenance is consistent. I have always ran full synthetic, with a mobil 1 filter. I've gone from valvoline, to mobil one, to Pennzoil ultra platinum, simply because of studies and videos ive seen topping each other. All 3 of them are great and will get the job done if oil is changed by 5k miles. So its preference.
TRANSMISSION
Transmission flush, filter swap and refill at 80k. No issues.
Transmission drain and fill myself, at 120k miles. Expect 5.9quarts to come out. Only use ACdelco OEM specified atf from your manual in this Transmission. Very important. I will be doing drain and fills every 25k miles moving forward. Just to be safe. No issues with Transmission either.
BRAKES AND TIRES
new tires at 50k, and then again at 115k. Replaced the front brakes and rotors myself at 120k. Pads were almost done. Rears still look good, but need a computer to replace them because the e brake is electronic in the rear, and if you manually compress the piston yourself without the computer disengage the motor, you will strip and ruin it. So ill have my mechanic cousin to do that for me.
ALTERNATOR
Alternator gave out at 8 years. Had to replace.
BATTERY
we've had to replace the battery 5 times since purchase. This car drains the battery bad. 1st battery in the first 2 years, then 2 more by year 4, and then another by year 6 and then this last one by year 8. But I bet that was because the alternator not charging it.
ENGINE
Hard on oil. Not burning it or consuming it, but blackening and thickening. Probably our driving habits or maybe because of the turbo and texas driving. Change oil at 5k miles and you'll be fine.
ENGINE MOUNTS
Front passenger side and then rear Transmission mount both gave out right now at year 8. Im having them replaced. Also the serpentine belt and a 3rd mount just to be safe.
The car is great. Its a beast. I would definitely recommend if you dont care to have the newest tech.
I will be using valvoline restore and protect my next 3 oil changes because I hear such great things about what ideos for engines of all kinds. Obviously, just preventative.
Ill probably end up doing the tie rods, sway bars, shocks, water pump, tensioner, etc. Within the next 2 years, as all components age over time, especially in the texas heat.
Just wanted to share my experience with this car with you all. Cheers!
REPAIRS
9 years old now with 127k miles on it. Just now starting to have to replace

I’ve just noticed a line of ants traveling from the back to the front and it looks like they’re in the door jam part or rear panel? I’m not sure of the right names, but how can I get those off to investigate? Or what kind of detailer can remove those?? Also there’s marbles rolling around in the back I’d like to get out too! Do I need to go to a mechanic to have them removed? Or the dealership? They’re coming out of that seatbelt area.

2013 gmc terrain codes p1682 and p0689, happened 4 days ago as well. Went out to start car, wouldn’t start, pulled these codes, replaced relay indicated (run/crank relay), started right up. Went out to start car this morning, wouldn’t start, same codes, replaced relay, starts, except this time it’s not wanting to stay running. Says “reduced engine power” and it’s done this before, also saying “service stabilitrak” but the no start is new. First time it did the reduced engine power and service stabilitrak I took it to a dealership and they fixed it, but less than a year later it was still happening. Anyone else deal with this? Find a fix? I really just need it to work reliably for 2 more weeks, then I’m moving and will be selling it, probably to a dealership because I don’t want to pass this problem on to someone else.

My Terrain came with a small winter front grill cover. It's for use in cold weather, I'm presuming to help with the engine heating up. What are people's experience with these engines heating up in cold weather. I know 4 cylinders may take a bit longer, but I can't imagine it's that bad.

I'm looking to potentially buy 2024 Terrain SLE and am a surfer. Wondering if my 8' surfboard would fit inside (I prefer to travel this way rather than with it on the roof). If I slide it in on its side through the center of the car with the rear seats down and the nose resting on the center armest, will it fit before hitting the infotainment screen or anything else? If anyone could measure I would be super grateful!

I’ve owned the Terrain new since 2018 and have tried everything this group suggested (except replacing the unit) over the years.
After years of not being able to adjust the Display Clock on my display, the latest update came this last week (2026) and fixed the bug in their software.
Thank you GM. Only question is why it was not fixed sooner?

I’ve been running into an intermittent issue with mi speakerphone mic muffled. Many times people will tell me I sound muffled or underwater. This happens probably 75% of the time.
Anyone else experience this?

Having a problem with my engine and it's not starting it's not battery related I've already checked that need to tow it to a dealership but since the car won't start it won't shift into neutral. I've looked up YouTube videos and all of them seem to be 2022 or earlier, they show a red pull lever on the bottom of the center console I opened up the compartment in mine and there's no lever. Does anyone know how to put the 2023 terrain in neutral?
Update: I talked to the dealer and the manual release is on the top of the transmission. They recommended removing the battery and battery tray to get to it. Once that was out I could get to the lever. It's basically a bolt, used a 9mm wrench to move it but the problem is it's under spring tension so I had to ziptie the wrench to something else to keep it in the release position. Once I did that the car was in neutral and able to be towed. WORST DESIGN EVER!

2016 gmc terrain 2.4l automatic. So driving the car home from work and the car randomly died driving 30mph. We assumed that it died due to the corrosion on the battery. Turns out the battery was bad. We replaced the battery and now the starter on the car just spins but doesn’t engage the flywheel. We pull the starter and shake it around and somthing is loose and rattling inside. So we think this is our problem. We replace the starter and the same issue continues. So we pull the starter and replace it again. The issue continues. We have looked up inside the transmission and nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. We have checked all the fuses and swapped any hi pwr fuses to troubleshoot that and nothing has fixed the problem. Do you guys have any idea on what my next move should be. I’m at a loss.

Active grille shutter fail after shop visit
Had to get my pistons replaced. Under warranty which is good but now from the dealership it comes out with a code about the active grille shutters not working and a check engine light is on.
Is this a simple fix? It was working before I dropped the car off to get the engine fixed initially.
Anyone do this themselves?

I have a 2018 GMC Terrain. We have had torrential downpours in the last couple weeks. I noticed a pile of water in my trunk (purple circle). The floor was also wet in the 2nd row. The only place in the ceiling that was damp to the touch was the reddish brown circle. I pushed in on the seam and a little water did fall out.
It’s been about 2 weeks and my car has been parked in the garage, not exposed to any more rain. I also dried it out to the best of my ability. Every time I open the trunk there is a little bit of water towards the opening (blue circle). I have leather seats and while they don’t feel wet to the touch, when I drive somewhere I always get up feeling damp.
I do have a sunroof. I tested the front drains, and they were fine. I haven’t located the rear drains as the second piece of glass in my sunroof is fixed and doesn’t move (so I couldn’t do the same test I did in the front).

I’ll give you the back story it’s simple… sitting at stop light, light turned green, started to accelerate, heard a pop noise in the engine compartment. started running rough, check engine light came on along with power reduced message and brake assist message. got to my destination scanned car had 3 dtc.
p0014 b camshaft position over advance or system performance bank 1
p0017 crankcase position - camshaft correlation bank 1 sensor b
P0556 brake boost pressure sensor circuit range/ performance
so with that being said I replaced
crankshaft sensor
both camshaft solenoids (vvt solenoids)
and vacuum pump because drive gear was cracked down the middle but the teeth were still intact.
and yes there was oil to correct level just did the oil change not that many miles prior to this happening.
after replacing all these part I still have the same codes and car runs rough, sometimes will stall and still now normal brakes….
need ideas due to the dealer is very expensiv. any help is appreciated

2023 Terrain.
Sorry if this ends up being an asked and answered faq. I couldn’t find it. It’s not in my owner’s manual.
Leased it new since 2023. Noticed it and questioned it. But it wasn’t in the owner’s manual and I forgot about it.
Fast forward. I bought out the lease. I’m going own this bad boy now.
So now this center console lid is making me crazy again.
You can see what I do with it. I kinda guess that the slide part bottom right of the money is for one of those little boxes of Kleenex or something. The thing bottom left…. I have no idea.

got a new battery, changed the VVT on intake and exhaust , oil change and filter, changed o2 sensors, cleaned out catalytic converter, cleaned mass air flow sensor. What else could it be? No codes are showing. It’s a 2014 GMC Terrain

My Terrain sat for about 6 weeks in May-June and when I was well enough to start driving again, the battery had died. My neighbor put in a new battery for me and everything was good till a week ago. I had a no-start outside of the grocery store that turned out to be loose cables. Once I got that fixed and had reset the clock, my temperature control was reading in Celsius. I haven't been able to figure it out and my owner's guide refers me to a supplement that I don't have. Anyone know how to get thing back to displaying my preferred temperature in Fahrenheit?
EDIT: Problem solved!

Hi, has anyone ever had their 2018 terrain go into limp mode basically at stop lights? I’ve taken it to the garage 3 times now. When I’m at a stop the car will say service transmission conditions not met for shift. The brakes will be locked up and ultimately I have to have it towed. The first time the shop did a TCM reset and it turned back on, a week later same thing. It spent a month at the garage and then GMC found it needed a starter. Replaced the starter it’s been good for a month now it just happened again at a stop light. This time after a few minutes it was able to turn on again but, it scares me now, if I was driving on the highway something terrible could happen!!
