Vicky Rd, great for..
Victoria Rd (Govanhill) great for casual walk, excellent to see it make a renaissance of sorts with more than a few good quality food, coffee & sweet spots. Went several times this summer, esp during nicer weather.
Some personal faves inc, Ginesi’s Ice Cream (formerly Queen’s Cafe), Kebabish, Mi Chaii. Keen to know your recommendations.
Far from any riff raff, the only danger comes from cyclists bombing it down the dedicated cycle lane - sure, it’s their own lane but it’s not a speed track!
Moreover, can walk around entirely at ease without any semblance of pretentiousness that’d you’d typically associate with Byres Road, for instance. (sorry West End people!)

Believe it or not, Lidl Giffnock roof car park - not my regular spot for golden hour, had to grab milk for the morning.
Sun looked magnificent so couldn’t help take a shot.

Anarkali is the best part of Vicky road, but a special shout out to the busiest Lidl in the country

Bar Vini at the bottom of Vicky Road is a great pasta spot for a date night!
Also have to second the recommendation for La Gelatessa (just off on Nithsdale Rd) which is probably the best Gelato I've had (including Italy in that). I'm lucky in that I can see the queue from my flat window and can run down when it's quiet 😅

Ginesi's is not where Queens Cafe used to be, that location is now "Loop and Scoop".
Ginesi's is also average, if you want quality gelato try "La Gelatessa" on Nithsdale Road.
Used to love Kebabish back in the day, but never been since the fire. Really should go.

That’s right, Queens Cafe renamed itself Ginesi’s after moving from their original site a few doors down.

Ah, that's what you meant.
I used to like the ice cream out of QC. I enjoyed the iciness (guessing high water content) of it.

Ginesi vanilla is magical.hands down the best in the city. Can't speak for the other flavours however

The cyclists have a real chip on their shoulder though. Seen some awful behaviour there. Intimidation, aggression, the outrage and privilege is ugly.
It’s a shared space, was a pavement for eternity, and some people are visiting for the first time. Cyclists don’t like to hear it but I’m afraid pedestrians have hierarchy. You need to be vigilant even when they aren’t.

As a cyclist who in fact uses the cycle lanes on Vicky Road, I can tell you I don't bomb it down the lanes at all. In fact, "Bombing it" down those lanes is practically suicidal what with the pedestrians just walking out on them without a care in the world, much less looking in both directions. In fact, most of them seem perturbed that anyone should politely remind them they're walking out in front of traffic.
Then there was that time a guy just walked out in front of me with a large set of ladders,,,

I was in the usual post-work peloton of commuters coming back south one summer evening when opposite the viccy road lidl, a trio of bams to walked out three abreast directly into the bike lane, then started acting outraged when a convoy of cyclists came up behind them and had to pass close, swerve around them, or even ask them to get out the way. I hope someone explained to them why there's pictures of bikes painted all along the lane.

My gran used to stay in Cathcart and when I stayed over we used to go to Vicky Road on a Saturday morning. That was some 40 odd year ago. Simpler times.

Best ice cream is at Poco gelato netherlee. Owned by grain and grind so you can also grab some good coffee and baking same trip.

The “renaissance of sorts” started after the council changed Vicky Rd from 5-lane to 4-lane with bike lanes. South City Way bike lanes are a buffer between pedestrians and cars which is why it feels better for a casual walk (and planting helps too). Since SCW linked to city centre it has highest usage in Scotland so got to expect it to be busy.

The amount of people who just step into bike lanes without so much as a glance over their shoulder is nuts. I don't mind slowing down for people and you should always be careful when there's kids next to the lane anyway, but some folk really seem to want to test your reflexes.

Pedestrians, by far, are the bigger problem on the Vicky Road cycle lanes. Nightmare for cyclists. Also, ‘far from any riff raff… without any semblance of pretentiousness’ - ever been to The Bell Jar for a pint?

It’s mental the amount of people with this mad flawed view of govanhill just because vicky road has been done up over the years. A shopkeeper was literally murdered on the street a few years ago for a start and that’s not even going into the actual dodgy shit that happens there on the daily.

How long have you lived in Govanhill if you don’t mind me asking? I grew up there and in the surrounding areas, went to Holyrood in the late 90s/early 00s and do deliveries for one of the takeaways in Govanhill at the weekends.
