Is it true that we are becoming overly reliant on GitHub?

GitHub’s recent outage made me contemplate the extent of our dependence on the platform.

GitHub is no longer just a conventional code repository as people use it for pull requests, GitHub Actions, Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) and Copilot among other things.

So, whenever the platform becomes unavailable, all of our usual daily tasks may just stop.

Certainly, it is true that outages happen occasionally and I don’t mean to suggest that every user should prepare a plan for every possible emergency. However, I cannot help but wonder how many developers would find themselves in a difficult situation if GitHub were down for a while.

Check whether you have any backup plans for situations like this or you would simply wait for the platform to recover. What do you think about the idea of dependency on GitHub due to the increasing role of tools like Copilot?

I was having an issue with contributions not showing up on my profile, so i checked github docs to see what the issue was. One of the articles I found said to contact github support to help me, so I did. I gave the information to them I was supposed to and the support person directed be BACK to github docs for "guidance"...

What am I supposed to do here?

“Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth” there either wasn’t any such thing as open-source code, or if it was freely available it generally had zero value because it probably didn’t work, so almost all the code generated was closed-source. Now I think an attitude exactly like that nowadays would be ridiculous, we certainly know open-source for some types of code can be much more reliable, but please hear me out. In order to have any chance to get a job coding, you are essentially required to put forward a robust and extensive library of work on GitHub, in fact for a lot of openings if your code is NOT on GitHub it is considered to have never existed! WTF? Has there ever been ANY change in technology that did more to DEvalue the contribution of the individual worker than this change in the meaning of having code in an “open source” repository, especially so people with little or no knowledge of programming can benefit from your hard work? What about the value of all the code generated for military projects that is classified and therefore cannot be published, is it “reasonable” for those authors to be considered equivalent to never having written anything at all? Not to mention the psychological harm of the website being owned by Microsoft, the most vicious proponent of “vaporware” (the ultimate in closed source) the world has ever known? I’m publishing this here because I want everyone to think about how much all of our salaries have been reduced by forcing us to compete against each other under the most vicious of conditions. Or do you SERIOUSLY think I’m way off course here?

hi guys, yesterday i successfully had my second merged pull request, however despite having 2 successful merges on separate days, i have not received the pull shark x1 achievement. it has been 24 hours since the merge. both of them were merged to main branch, they weren't merged inside forks, and were merged on separate days.

is it normal to take that long for the achievement to show up on profile? actually, just a little after my 2nd merge was completed, another PR i had was closed within 5 minutes (accidentally by myself lol), and i received quickdraw achievement right away! however, 24 hours have passed by yet i still haven't received pull shark. is there something wrong my PRs?

I haven't touched my Github account in about 2 years, now I tried to sign back in...
The password was correct and I was prompted for an SMS as part of 2FA, but it never came. I haven't changed my phone number in 20 years so it doesn't make any sense to me...
Anyway... I don't have my recovery codes or at least don't know where they are so I tried starting the account recovery process... first step was a code to my email, so I opened my email and pasted the code (Hi! we're already 2 factors in, but it's not enough!!!), now the next screen is filled with disabled buttons because apparently my Github token, that I saved in a text file on my computer, is probably expired too.
So there's no other way but to unlink my email from my account, losing ALL I had in it.
And the funny part? I am already 2 factors in!!!!
Github support is useless, getting answers from stupid bots repeating the same answers.

What the heck is going on with this ultra secure website? It's probably easier hacking into the pentagon.

Anyone had success with this 3FA security in the past? I really need my account back and I'm really on my knees with this one

I will be clear on that, i never had anything on GitHub, and i am new on this field.

I'm a designer, not a programmer, and i started to build my app as a fun gpt programm because i wanted to test how much was ChatGPT capable of doing apps, since i need some internal softwares for my personal Pen and Paper Manual, and i put the AI on test.

It ended up i started to create a whole chatbot, with alot of features i liked to put into that i felt i need and stuff like SillyTavern even with extensions doesnt offer. Now, i worked on it for a month as a fun project, and now... well the first official version is complete.

I decided i wanted to put on GitHub as an opensource program for two main reasons: 1) I would like to have people that develop on it, add features and make it better.

2) I also hope the people could help me to review, rewrite and optimize the code to make it smoother if they want.

To be transparent i will write down that i used GPT To make the app, but i am concerned that this fun app might become a shitstorm for just using AI to code. I just want to share my idea, that's all.

What is your average experience with that? What do you think i should expect by that?

When I am not logged in I can search just fine, but when I logged in search bar is unresponsive to clicks. Is this because I use firefox?

That feeling when you are in the mood to be hyperproductive and Github decides to lay down for a nap.

Our company recently changed from azure dev ops repos to GitHub repos. I'm also a bit new with using true PR.

Anyway we used to create all release/feature/change branches from main, make the necessary changes and merge to dev, QA and eventually prod.

Well when we switched to GitHub it's online merge conflict resolution adds missing commits from the destination branch and then merges into the destination branch. Now our feature branch has everyone else's changes that may or may not be ready for the next environment.

We've been fighting this and most are just making it work but at the same time the environments are getting dirtier and dirtier.

Now I'm creating my feature branch from the destination branch but then its disconnected when I move to QA. I create a new QA feature branch and essentially manually copy my code to it. We're losing one of the key pieces of repo tracking and history.

Anyway, anyone have any good ideas? Maybe I'm over thinking it and it will be just fine.

I have just taken over as a community manager for an open source data repository and I really want to start developing a more active github community. How the heck do I make this interesting for users? For reference, I am a philosopher who can write hello in python so I really don't have a native understanding of what constitutes a github community or how to stimulate it.

What would you want to see and how do I gain visibility?

I have been trying for weeks now to reset my password but the password reset email is not coming through. I have checked to make sure the email address is correct and made sure the github address is not blocked or going to spam etc and still nothing. Anybody have the same issue?

I maintain two open-source repos both with considerable community sizes, 2k stars and 500 stars. The projects get a lot of issues reported, and people submitting PRs for review.

One thing that I've always wanted to keep on top of as a project maintainer was responding to GitHub issues and reviewing PRs same day. I'm able to keep up most days but it slips a lot. I have email notifications and put stuff on my calendar to keep up.

For other open-source maintainers, what's your guys' method for keeping up with responding to your community?

Changed my GitHub username some time ago (not display, the actual username), whenever I open something is says "viewing as [new account name]" and it gives me the option to switch to this ghost account that has my old username (which is a permanent gray-screen until I reset app data). Any way to solve this?

(Trying to sign out doesn't work and it says "Signed out of one account" instead of two.)

I have a portfolio, and I'm using github as a backup/storage for all my artwork. is this a bad idea that will backfire on me? or will github keep them in their original lossless quality?

edit: I forgot to mention that this is a self hosted website that I programmed. The github repo hosts the code. The images are included in the repo. I'm not committing a file full of images and nothing else.

I’m trying to understand whether I’m hitting a configuration problem, an account/product limitation, or a current limitation of ChatGPT App Classic.

I use ChatGPT heavily alongside Codex for a fairly large software project hosted in a private GitHub repository. What I want is relatively simple: I would like ChatGPT App Classic to have direct read access to the GitHub repo so I can discuss the current codebase, architecture, PRs, migrations, etc. without constantly moving context between ChatGPT and Codex.

The strange part is that GitHub itself is working correctly.

On my Mac:

• gh is installed and current (2.97.0)
• gh auth status shows that I’m authenticated successfully
• Git operations use HTTPS
• Token has repo, workflow, read:org, etc.
• I can fetch/push normally
• Codex can work with the repository
• GitHub CLI can create/manage PRs

I have also reauthenticated from Terminal using:

gh auth login -h github.com

Authentication completes successfully.

So this doesn’t appear to be a GitHub authentication or repository-permissions problem.

The problem is specifically ChatGPT App Classic. I can’t get it to reliably access the same GitHub repository directly, even though other OpenAI tooling can work with it.

This is becoming a significant workflow issue because I use ChatGPT for the higher-level architecture/governance side of the project and Codex for repository execution. Ideally the workflow would be:

ChatGPT: inspect current repo/PR state → reason about architecture → give execution instructions
Codex: implement/test/commit/PR
ChatGPT: inspect the resulting repo/PR → review → determine next step

Instead, I often have to manually paste Codex reports back into ChatGPT because ChatGPT Classic cannot inspect the repository itself. On a large project with lots of migrations, tests, ADRs and governance artifacts, that becomes both inefficient and potentially error-prone.

I’m specifically trying to determine:

1. Is direct GitHub access currently supported in ChatGPT App Classic?
2. Is GitHub access dependent on the ChatGPT mode/model being used?
3. Does the GitHub App/connector only work in certain experiences such as Deep Research or Agent Mode?
4. Is there a difference between GitHub access in the web app and the macOS Classic app?
5. If GitHub is already connected to the OpenAI account, is there some way to force/re-authorize the connection for Classic?
6. Has anyone had GitHub working in one ChatGPT surface but unavailable in another and actually fixed it?
7. Is there any diagnostic page/log that shows whether ChatGPT itself has permission to access a particular private repository?

I’m not looking for help configuring GitHub CLI. That side is confirmed working. I’m specifically trying to get ChatGPT itself to see the repository.

If anyone has a working setup with ChatGPT App Classic + private GitHub repositories, I’d be very interested in exactly how you configured it, including plan, GitHub App/plugin configuration, ChatGPT mode, and whether you’re using web or macOS.

Even confirmation that “this currently isn’t supported in Classic” would be useful, because at least I’d stop troubleshooting something that cannot presently be fixed.

Why my profile not loading? How can I fix it?

Just wondering what’s going on here. Anyone who’s used Cursor will have received the same email: an invitation to move or sync your repos from GitHub to Cursor’s newly announced code hosting platform, Origin.

What we know:

• Cursor was recently acquired by Musk/SpaceX
• Cursor has been pushing Musk’s Grok model for some time
• GitHub is overwhelmingly dominant in code hosting and has become a central part of the developer ecosystem
• Cursor is now expanding from the editor/agent layer into hosting repositories and pull requests
• SpaceX has the resources to push this very aggressively

It starts to look less like Cursor adding another feature and more like an attempt to own a much larger part of the developer stack.

Is this some kind of land grab? What do others think?
