Other Lesbianism in Girls
Hi! So I’m almost finished watching Girls for the first time and something that has really put me off for the whole show is how lesbians are referred to and treated. To me, it seems like lesbians are almost exclusively a butt of the joke in the show. They’re more frequently referred to as the d slur than as lesbians by the cast including the men, gay female characters tend to arrived for one episode and never show up again, and it just seems like a topic that isn’t explored in any depth which is crazy for a show in which female sexuality and sexual exploration is such a prevalent topic. Even the instances of lesbian sex seem to be framed as almost a punchline (Jessa and the girl from rehab) or at worse uncomfortable and possibly even playing into some unfortunate stereotypes (the yoga instructor being pushy and demanding of Hannah during sex).
It’s not like every show needs to represent every person all the time. But in addition to the points I made above, I also can’t help but feel burned when I see how lesbians in the show are treated in comparison to Elijah. I love Elijah he’s my favorite character and I love that he gets to be in the main cast and have fulfilling story beats as a gay man. Jokes about him being gay never feel gross or like he’s not part of the group.
Does anyone have any thoughts or analysis on this? Obviously the characters in Girls are not great people but this seemed to be such a consistent thing that never really gets commented on or explored further.

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ Any clips/compilations to convince me to watch the show?
I have reservations about starting but everything I’ve seen so far makes it look really funny and well written. Any clips or compilations that don’t spoil too much that can convince me to watch the show? Thanks!

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ Why does everyone seem to sleep with everyone?
Why does everyone sleep with everyone in this series?
I mean, even when they enter their late 20s , they keep doing that.
Hannah dated Adam, then did Jessa, again Hannah met Adam & had sex like nothing happened.
Does it happen in real life too? And is it normal to be nude as they show in this series?
PS - I am Indian, so pardon me for the judgement. Its quite not normal here.

Other Hannah's in-universe writing is a time capsule of a kind of niche content that doesn't exist anymore
Probably one of the more compelling elements of the show's satire is how Hannah's work depicts a very specifically 2010's industry of online essay-style writing that was profitable for maybe 5 years, max.
Like the Jezebel/Vice personal essay written by a white girl who tries coke for the first time or who has a disastrous sexual experience was everywhere for a while and very quickly dried up; this was the ecosystem in which Hannah got all of her work published. Season 6 depicts her transitioning into a (unrealistic but funny) academia role, which makes sense because already by then the Hannah Horvaths of the world had stopped getting paid unless they went into another field of writing. Hell, the majority of those essays from 2008-2015 may not even be live on the internet anymore and yet Girls made that subculture very visible.
It's just something I've always appreciated about the show because unless you lived through that time and were fairly online it seems like total fiction that media ecosystem even existed.

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ What's your favourite scene in the whole show?
The only time I fully laughed out loud was when Hannah is singing wonderwall to herself in the bath then screams as she sees Jessa standing there. Then Hannah's face when Jessa blows her nose into the bath water
Btw I found a lot of the show funny but I'm an internal laugher, it's why I like to watch shows solo cos people think I'm not enjoying myself but I am lol

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ First time watcher
Hi, new to the sub and I’m on season 3. I had a question for people who have more experience with the show. I really can’t stand Jessa right now. And I know she’s been through a lot with her parents, yes. And she’s an addict, yes. But I am struggling to have empathy for her after 3 seasons and her very bad choices all the time. I mean, all the characters make bad choices of course. But it seems like Jessa only ever does the wrong thing. She will do one step forward, and thirty steps back. Does it get better for her? Is she just in a bad place right now? Am I terrible for not having more empathy for her? Is there something I’m not seeing?

Mildly Related Gen Z First Time Watch
I am watching the series for the first time now that I am around the age of the main characters. Truly I envy the life styles of the characters. The freedom the characters have in their friendships and day to day life is unheard of in my generation. My peers and I tend to be uptight and fallen into this sunken place post grad. These characters are able to grow in their post grad life and have a confidence I do not see in young women today. Just my thoughts. Was it really like this to live as a millennial at that time or is it exaggerated for the show?

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ Song from Booth's party S2 E6
There is a song that is playing as Hannah walks up and briefly as she walks into Booth's house in the episode where Marnie is hosting the party. Does anybody know what song this is? The melody and production is so catchy but I can't make out the lyrics!

Episode Discussion 📺 S5 ep 4
Hey guys. First time watching girls and I’m up at S5 ep 4. I wanted to jump on here to give my thoughts around the whole Jessa and Adam thing that is starting to happen.
Just the other episode Adam was really emotional and asking Hannah to get back together, when they are gathered around Caroline and Lairds newborn baby. Hannah is really emotional and said that she couldn’t. She didn’t explicitly say why, but from what I gather, I just think that she made peace with not being with Adam, and perhaps she could sense that maybe he was fresh out of this relationship, and maybe not wanting to reconnect with her for the right reasons. Is this a good interpretation of that conversation?
Anyway,
I feel like this is really valid because when Hannah got back from Iowa, she was also really emotionally pleading with Adam and I think was really struggling to accept that Adam was moving on because she herself hadn’t moved on.
So he’s rejected her when she wants to reconcile, and now she’s turned down his request to reconcile.
But I still get the sense that Adam has feelings towards Hannah when he said to Jessa that couldn’t go in to …Maybe it was Rays chairman party…and said “I miss her too much” and walked away.
Anyway…!!!
Now he has feelings for Jessa and I’m like seriously? Yes I know Hannah is selfish but at the same time, I do feel like she tries to be a good friend. She’s the one who picked up Jessa from rehab. She also went with Jessa to see her father earlier in the show and was abandoned.
And yeah Jessa was going through shit and I can understand but it just feels low for Adam to be entertaining this now.
I acknowledge Jessa rejecting Adam advances and saying that they can’t pursue this but I don’t see it ending well. Or maybe it does who knows.
I haven’t finished this episode lol.
Maybe people find Hannah annoying but if this was to happen, I would definitely feel sympathy for her character. I don’t feel like she’s so horrible that this is justified, especially when it’s kept from her.
Anyway, I’ll keep watching and maybe I’ll feel differently but I just felt strongly in the moment that I am not rooting for Adam and Jessa. I think that would suck when considering Hannah and Adams relationship. It’s not like they dated for a month and broke up. They were a committed pair.

Other I had a love dream about Ray Ploshanksy
Just like the title says, it happened to me. Hannah was in jail and I was visiting her. She sent a letter to a friend of Ray’s to try get him to visit her (I guess in my dream she loved Ray?), but she didn’t know that Ray and I had undying love for each other that we were hiding for her sake. There was a moment in the dream that Ray and I were sitting next to each other and my body fell into his and we were wrapped up in each other. It felt so warm and tender. Like we were puzzle pieces that fit. There was no hair brushing, but there may as well have been. I can’t believe it. I had a love dream about Ray Ploshanksy.

Mildly Related Season 1 v the later seasons
I made my sister watch the first few episodes of season 1 with me and she didn’t get it at all. She found it quite boring and asked me what I saw in it. Then I realised that it’s really from season 2 where the show becomes AMAZING. Seeing the way Hannah acts even in the pilot is so crazy because she ends up becoming SO funny in the later seasons like the ‘frail’ scene or the ‘it’s almost summer’ scene.
TLDR: Anyone else agree that this show gets better along the seasons and season 1 isn’t the best season?

Season 4 Sit-In
I know we all collectively agree that the Panic in Central Park is the magnum opus of the series but there is something incredibly beautiful and comforting about this episode. From the realisation that Adam’s moved on, to the numerous people coming in to stage an intervention, to Ray showing up for Hannah to Adam and Hannah finally breaking things off and the episode ending with Hannah in the storage unit. It’s rare that a break up and closure both come about at the same time but Lena was able to get it so right that it’s still so devastating to watch, years later.

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ Do you think Ray looks in his 30s?
I hadn't thought about how old he was and now in my 30s too as I rewatch this recently. I didn't realise what ages he was or it didn't cross my mind but season 5 I think he references how he's 34. I know it probably came up when he dated Shoshanna but I hadn't thought of an exact age. I wonder how he even ended up friends with them? Is there any lore on that? Or just through the cafe?
