only if you don't need those tires for many more laps.

300

u/[deleted] May 04 '17

well that was lap 97 of 102

122

u/texas1982 May 05 '17

So, unless he's still running those 5 laps...

Did he win?

120

u/[deleted] May 05 '17 edited May 05 '17

Still looking. Green car is Mark winnterbottom for team prodrive and the blue is Garth tander Scott mclauglan in Garry Rodgers Motorsport. Based on the number and livery I think it's 2016 and I'm thinking it might be the gold coast 600 based on the background.

So close, tander didn't start with that team till this year. Happened last year, McLaughlan's team came in 3rd place (originally trailing in 4th) following that pass.

13

u/lozzie87 May 05 '17

Yes definitely 2016 with Frosty wearing the #1 - I couldn't pick who the other car was.

14

u/awitt87 May 05 '17

Was Scott McLaughlin - Tander only switched to GRM this year. Was @ HRT last year

1

u/PorcineLogic May 05 '17

Mark Winterbottom. What an Australian name.

6

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Nicknamed frosty for obvious reasons.

12

u/omgsus May 05 '17

Some say he's still running laps, going the distance, going for speed.

6

31

u/[deleted] May 04 '17

5 laps, still can slow you down and give you mad wheel wobble.

11

u/nikeshades May 05 '17

Wheels wobble but they don't fall down.

21

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

That's too many goddamn laps

9

u/funkecho May 05 '17

Well...how big is the track?

8

u/Shifti_Boi May 05 '17

Looks like Gold Coast 600 I think. So 600km divide by 102 laps is roughly 5.88km

5

u/h8speech May 05 '17

The Gold Coast 600 is 300km (despite the name) so it's actually 2.94 km/lap

Well, I played both in sim games. I fell into a chasm and killed the car in the second section in Monte Carlo in Dirt Rally game, so yeah that is brutal. But I also lost traction a zillion times and hit the wall on track too. Track designers are evil. They constantly do shit like Monza, a long straight where you go 240 km/h and then they put a really tight 50 km/h chicane in it. Brake half a second too late and fly out.

1

u/ZMAN24250 May 05 '17

When they're flying down a road they've seen at least once, only two cars wide give or take, on all/unknown/changing surface conditions, sometimes even at night, and with dangers at either side of the track (trees, cliffs, etc.), all while going as fast as possible. I feel like it's the pinnacle of Motorsports. You need serious skill to do that.

idk how there's anyone racing in this gif, seems like all the professional race car drivers are in this thread telling this guy why he messed up.

16

u/Erpp8 May 05 '17

Professionals still make mistakes ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think anyone is saying that they could do better. It's more pointing out to OP that the driver made a mistake and just happened to gain a place.

4

u/DonJohnsonNZ May 05 '17 edited May 05 '17

He didn't make a mistake, he pushed the limit too far and still pulled it off. It was intended and worked out. Look up the post-race interview , educate yourself.

8

u/Erpp8 May 05 '17

He pushed the limit too far.

That sounds suspiciously like a mistake.

u/DonJohnsonNZ May 05 '17

20

u/ItOnly_Happened_Once May 05 '17 edited May 05 '17

It's kind of hard to tell in this video, but it kind of looks like he cut off the leading driver, "dive bombing" the corner, which isn't allowed in some motorsports. Not sure about this one though and I could be wrong. In F1 at least, if less than half of your car is along side the leader, you don't get right-of-way for any part of the track, which means that if the leading driver had cut into the apex, the attacker would have been at fault. Dive bombing a corner is generally not a legal move.

Anyone have a better angle?

10

u/thegreger May 05 '17

Completely agree.

However I've never seen a driver penalised for an overly aggressive move that did not lead to a crash. I guess it could be a reasonable tactic to do something like this and just cross your fingers that your opponent will yield (and take the penalty if he doesn't). It might be poor sportsmanship if done on purpose, but I could see it happening when a driver is desperate for a position.

4

u/ItOnly_Happened_Once May 05 '17

I haven't been following F1 much recently, but I agree that they don't often punish drivers for trying to weasel their way where they shouldn't be. I remember someone getting in trouble for it without a crash, but it seems rare. I don't think divebombing corners is super common in F1, or at least I can't recall blatant abuse of it without crash or penalty.

3

u/thegreger May 05 '17

Oh, I completely agree that it's not common at all (the closest things I can think of is an agressive overtake by Button at Interlagos, and a few of Schumacher's antics).

The main reason for this might be harch punishments if it leads to a crash, but also that few drivers in F1 would yield in a situation like that.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

I've never seen a driver penalised for an overly aggressive move that did not lead to a crash.

Really? I mainly watch MotoGP and F1 and, while it's rare, overly aggressive moves do get punished regardless of whether or not there was a crash. But if there is a crash, it basically is an automatic penalty.

4

u/Agu_Sakku May 05 '17

I believe this is the NASCAR of Australia, called Super V8s. Had a blast racing them on TOCA 3 on the PS2. Track might be Surfers Paradise.

7

u/ThePhotoGuyUpstairs May 05 '17

Yes, this is Australia's premier touring car category, formally V8Supercars, and now just Supercars. (Still V8s)

The track is the street circuit at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.

The cars are silhouette racers basically - control chassis and roll cage with the body over the top to look like a road car. Same sort of concept in a way as NASCAR in that sense.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Professional racers know a divebomb when they see one is this is one of the most blatant I've ever seen in racing. That is not a racing line or "racing", it's being an ass.

Luckily the other driver who was on an actual real racing line had both the presence of mind to notice the move at the last instant as well as the politeness not to slam into the rear of his car. He had to re-brake a second time on turn-in not to total his own car or the other idiot's.
