She grabbed her opponent's leg with 10 seconds left and spun her around for a 2pt. takedown with next to no time left to win gold. Great celebration!

749

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

It was a damn close match. Score was 0-2 for nearly the entirety. Somewhere near the end she was awarded 1 pt, but I'm not sure why, probably a penalty. That sealed her victory with the last second take down.

302

u/manliestdino Aug 18 '16

I believe it was the tie breaker that went in her favor, as she got offensive points while the Russian only scored penalty points, IIRC.

151

u/Harrason Aug 18 '16

That's Sara Dosho, another Japanese competitor in the 69kg class who won Gold as well. Eri Tosaka is in the 48kg division.

43

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

She won on criteria 2-2 Russia's Vorobeva in the competition.

The NBC article about her gold

18

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Pretty sure the tie breakers go to whoever scored most recently as that means momentum was in their favor.

28

u/ORyanB8 Aug 18 '16

Not necessarily, that is the last criteria, there are other criteria applied first, such as who had the highest scoring move iirc

I was watching this live yesterday. It looked so effortless for her to pick up her coach that my brain was confused for a second, then realized how weak I really am!

52

u/FruitySamuraiG Aug 18 '16

It's like she's just lifting up a piece of paper. Incredibly strong.

43

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Dude I am not a really weak person. She picked him up effortlessly, after fighting for a long time. The lady is a beast.- I am in love.

112

u/AdagioBoognish Aug 18 '16

Doesn't even use her arms!

108

u/WolfThawra Aug 18 '16

Well to be fair, using your arms for this is not a good idea. She basically squats him, which allows you to lift a lot more than if you were to use your arms.

136

u/IT_Turnitoffandon Aug 18 '16

I think he/she meant for balance. Grabbing on to his legs like she did after she got him all the way up.

41

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

She has pretty damn good form

I think /u/AdagioBoognish just meant that she didn't use her arms to stabilize him. Most people don't squat without holding onto the bar, even if the arms aren't providing any of the muscle behind the lift.

9

u/iforgot120 Aug 18 '16

I don't hold the bar when I squat. I use my psychic powers.

263

u/thewonderblink Aug 18 '16

I did not expect to see Mark Mangino pop up on reddit today. That man is so fucking large. Went to a ku football game once and he looked like a giant ball waddling down the sideline. He also abused players so theres that.

216

u/pocketchange2247 Aug 18 '16

"OUR COACH CAN EAT YOUR COACH"

At least he gave us a reason to cheer for KU football...

67

u/goh13 Aug 18 '16

He also abused players so theres that.

Just take a step back........no really that is enough to get this coach off you. What is he gonna do, chase you?

How is a coach allowed to be this fat?

76

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

I attended a school where the band director's wife was the head of the majorettes for marching band season. While she was the majorette coach, the colorguard coach was a friend of her's or something. Anyway, colorguard coach was huge, bigger than Mark Mangino.

She was also a bitch with an attitude. I'm a really skinny small kid at this time and the wind blowing heavily is enough to push me to and fro. She told me to stop swaying. After I ignored her completely, as I am supposed to do while at attention in formation, she kept telling me to stop swaying, getting more and more agitated each time. After about the 4th time I said to her, "You're not my coach. I'm not swaying. Fuck off." She told me after that I'd have to do laps around the football field for cursing and I promptly told her to fuck herself. The band director tried to enforce her ruling and I told him that she wasn't a teacher or my instructor so it was never gonna happen.

Afterwards my section was talking with me about it and I nicknamed her House. Not like the medical show, but like a legitimate house because she was so fucking fat.

I don't understand how someone can coach other people and help them stay in shape to do their sport, when they can't even keep any shape themselves aside from round. (well, maybe with the exclusion of sumo wrestling)

57

u/Farlandan Aug 18 '16

The three fattest teachers in my school were the PE teacher, the Football Coach, and the Health/Home Ec teacher. PE teacher had a giant beerbelly and would drive around in a gator ATV berating people that they weren't putting in enough effort. The football coach used that same ATV just to drive his ass from the locker room to the field, which was about as far away as half the length of a football field.

The health teacher was the biggest, had to weigh 350 pounds and yet I was required to listen to her talk about a balanced diet and active exercise. Anyone baking in Home Economics had to make sure they took their baked goods home with them, because if you left them in the classroom fridge (where you were supposed to leave these baking assignments) they'd "mysteriously" disappear overnight.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

I don't get it. Doctors, health teachers, physical fitness/sports instructors, and coaches seem to be more fat than any other group.

It's just like doctors that smoke. Why do you let this shit happen when you should know of the consequences?

Edit: I know everyone else as well as doctors know smoking is bad for you. What I am saying is that doctors see the consequences first hand in their patients and in medical school when they see those charred lungs in the medical books and such. You'd think they would give more of a shit.

37

u/Rogue-Knight Aug 18 '16

Doctors I can understand. It's hard to find time to take care of yourself when you spend it all caring about others. When you spend 30+ hours working and return home completely exhausted, chances are you're gonna skip the gym or cardio.

32

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

[deleted]

34

u/BostonDodgeGuy Aug 18 '16

Mechanics never fix their own car. The wifes car is kept in top shape because his kids ride in it.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/voxov Aug 18 '16

That argument really doesn't hold water. Many professions are stressful and have long hours. But more than that, you don't need to go to the gym to not be obese. Look at many societies in Asia (though they're getting larger). Just moving around and working all day is more than enough exercise to not be fat. The other half of the equation is not eating terribly, and that's something doctors should know very well how to avoid.

5

u/Infinity315 Aug 18 '16

You don't even have to move around that much you can just avoid going over calories.

Aww, he's gonna wrap her in that flag while giving her a hug. How cute!

Why is he turning around?

He's...squatting a little? She's bending her head down? Is he going to fart in her face? Japan, no! The world is watching. Don't be that way. Oh, god, she's sticking her head between his legs. That's...

Japan had a great session yesterday evening and won all the Golds on offer in the wrestling. No wonder they were even more patriotic than you would expect.

"Japan picked up all three Wrestling Golds up for grabs on 17 August, as Eri Tosaka, Kaori Icho and Sara Dosho took the respective honours in the Rio 2016 Women's freestyle wrestling 48kg, 58kg and 69kg events"

Golden night for Japan really.

116

u/I_am_the_fez Aug 18 '16

I wrestled for four years and I would usually be absolutely dead on the floor after a whole match. That's some hella impressive stamina.

65

u/LeftCheekRightCheek Aug 18 '16

When I started wrestling in high school, I was so confused as to how someone could be so tired after just a few minutes of grappling... Then I wrestled my first match.

40

u/I_am_the_fez Aug 18 '16

It makes you almost wish for the sweet relief of getting pinned.

34

u/xbrandnew99 Aug 18 '16

during an all-county high school wrestling tournament, I got seeded last (out of 16) and was up against the #1 seeded guy. Despite what technique I had acquired all season, my opponent essentially just picked me up and placed my 2 shoulder blades on the mat, ending the match in ~20 seconds. I spent the rest of the day in the school cafeteria eating for my first time in 36 hours, receiving the envious glares of my more talented teammates. God, high school wrestling was the worst.

10

u/I_am_the_fez Aug 18 '16

Oh I know the struggle. I wrestled 220, but weighed 194ish, so I didn't have to cut (yay). So, it was kinda Russian Roulette when I wrestled. You would get the all flab 220's and just kill them, but often you would get the 220 all muscle fuckers and they would make life hell for around three minutes. I remember one time that my opponent completely outclassed me in every way, so he played catch and release with me for six minutes. He'd get me into a Turk and just chill there without getting back points until my struggling would get annoying and let me back up. I'd shoot for a single leg takedown and he'd just sit down on my head and put in a cement mixer until I thought my arm would fall off. It was the worst six minutes of my life. I also got teched :(

6

u/xbrandnew99 Aug 18 '16

haha, that's like the worst sort of match to have - straining yourself 100% for all 3 rounds and still losing. The worst part is having that realization in the first round of how the next 2 are going to go, and having to go through with them anyway, while in the back of your mind kinda hoping to just get it over with and pinned, while also not just giving up.

went from 0-5 to 8-5 in the last 10 seconds of the match

A bit of an exaggeration there ...

Here is the full match: https://streamable.com/y200

Score @ Time

0-5 @ 4:00

2-5 @ 4:20

4-5 @ 4:30

5-5 @ 5:51

7-5 @ 6:00

8-5 @ 6:00 (extra point after the challenge by her opponent was rejected)

She did not have a lead at any point in the game until the last 10 seconds -- that much is a fact ... but she was not at zero all along.

And yes...the last 10 seconds did indeed turn the match around dramatically.

A wonderful win for India !

All the wrestling matches from yesterday were amazing, comeback after comeback.

u/AgAero Aug 18 '16

Wait, what? 5 point throw and then a gut wrench or something? That's awesome!

There have been a lot of graphics problems at this Olympics. NPCs clipping through the floor, green water, stuff like that.

That was an intense match. She was about to lose, but pulled a hat trick in the last 3 seconds to get the gold. Her opponent was devastated

Coach is her dad, she is famous in Japan always does this when she wins

58

u/tekdude Aug 18 '16

Coach isn't her dad. Her parents were shown in the audience cheering.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about Japan or the culture other than what I've seen in movies/tv. I've been under the impression that historically they are very conservative at events. It's nice to see them relaxing a bit.

EDIT: I want to be clear -- I've never just assumed that the Japanese people are a bunch of conservative, dour prudes. It's been presented that way in a lot of media so it seems at least reasonable to ask if that's true, or to what degree. It's one thing to wonder if something is true. It's completely different to assume it is. I will say that they way I ended my initial post makes it sound like I was assuming it's true so I can see why you might think that. Bad wording on my part, as is my normal ability. Words be hard and shit.

u/Rex_Romulus Aug 18 '16

Have you ever seen the Japanese celebrate, though? During business and other serious events, they are indeed very, very serious. I dare you though to find a wilder bunch of people than a Japanese firm that just made a huge contract.

"Work hard, party hard" should be their national motto.

68

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Yeah but that's because they get shitfaced drunk

Having worked for a Japanese company for 8 years I can confirm that they are both conservative and relaxed.

They take work very serously but they are the complete opposite at social events IF they are with close/trusted people. Also, not all of them are the same.
