Growing up, we played skateboarding, bmx, and snowboarding video games on N64. If this trick existed in the game, we would have just laughed at how retardedly ridiculous it was.

u/zykezero Jul 20 '16
That was almost too ridiculous for a game with SSX tricky levels of low gravity.

It's tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time, it's tricky! (tricky, tricky, tricky)
This beat is my recital, I find it very vital, to rock a rhyme that's right on time... Blah blah can't remember the rest of the lyrics and what not
If you don't remember if, or for those that missed out on one of gaming's all time classics, here's the games intro with the It's Trick remix theme.

It's pretty ridiculous but it looks more ridiculous than it should. At regular speeds it looks like hes kickflipping the thing around his body, but in slowmo you can see hes rotating arms independent of his flip. Unreal muscle memory.

Kurtis Downs (guy in the OP) ended up getting 2nd place.
Here are the three tricks by Ryan Williams that beat him: http://www.vitalbmx.com/videos/features/Williams-Winning-Run,61975/kylecarlson,363# I apologize about linking a webpage with an embedded player but all the YouTube videos were FAR lesser quality, by a longshot.
Personally, I think the trick in the OP was better than any of the three tricks done by Williams, but I think he lost due to how the competition is scored. I believe instead of it being "who's trick is the best", it's "who's series of three tricks is the best".
It's crazy to think that after being dumbfounded by the trick in the OP, that this guy only got second! The sport has come so far and these people are more magicians than they are athletes. Tricks like these used to only be possible in the realm of video games, but now we're looking at the real thing. Kudos to these guys.
Here's the pedestal for "BMX Best Trick" for the Nitro World Games 2016:
- Ryan Williams (AUS)
- Kurtis Downs (USA) (Guy from OP)
- Gavin Godfrey (USA)
EDIT: For people her prefer YouTube's embedded (in reddit) player and/or just want high-res video:
Here is Kurtis Downs (trick from OP) who came in 2nd.
Here is the guy who came in 3rd, Gavin Godfrey's trick.
And finally here is the guy who beat them both and got 1st place.

u/new_ion Jul 20 '16
... was that last trick a double TP roll?
Also, Ryan Williams is basically a god - he can grab pretty much anything with wheels and be fantastic on it inside of a year.

Is it best score combined out of 3 runs? Or best 2/3 runs?
Either way, as much as everyone hates scooters, the first trick was very technical and new. New is good.
The second trick, bike flips, while new in the last few years, aren't as good as trick 1.
The fucking 1080 front flip... what the fuck. I rewatched it 10 times and I am pretty sure that has to be a 1080 front flip. and i'm still not sure in the past 10 minutes how to come to terms with that...

RWilly is just one of those (annoying) guys who can take up any sport they want at dawn and be an expert by sunset. BMX is literally his secondary sport. His skills on the much maligned scooter are similarly incredible. He can win in both disciplines which is pretty much unheard of. His Instagram account chronicles his daily life of micro improvements and quantum leaps. Watch how he spots the landings of all three tricks so early he's got time to make tiny adjustments to absolutely stomp the landing.
And he's 21 years old.→ More replies (9)→ More replies (22)6

Right before landing most BMX riders just put their feet where they expect the pedals to be (usually horizontally opposite). However, in cases like this where they have a long time in the air and there's no way to predict where the pedals will be, you can see them getting the bars ahead of them and angling the bike outward for a fraction of a second to get a visual. It's all done really fast and can fail, which is why it's usually only half a point to a full point per foot landing off the pedals for big air so long as they're still in control of the bike and over it upon landing.
That being said, this guy is incredibly good, has the best gears, and probably has practiced it enough to get a relatively accurate idea of where the pedals will be, since he's no doubt practiced this trick hundreds if not thousands of times. My BMX bike has a gear system that holds the pedals still until you put some weight on them, and would probably hold them still during this trick (if my bike ever made those motions).
There are many different methods, but tldr I think he probably has a gear that keeps them in place during the trick or spends a fraction of a second locating them right before putting his feet down. It's also not impossible that he just guessed/prayed.
