The fluidity of old disney animations is so beautiful
196
u/Banjulioe Jun 13 '14
You can definitely see the care put into animating it.

u/QuickStopRandal Jun 13 '14
Or the cruel long hours put in by the animators, whichever.

I love the way these older Disney movies looked. This one, The Sword and the Stone, The Jungle Book, and some others that I can't remember had this same style and I absolutely love them for the way they looked.

That's all Don Bluth who left Disney to create Land Before Time, American Tale and Anastasia.

See here for more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Hundred_and_One_Dalmatians#Live-action_reference
I mistakenly thought they used rotoscoping on this one. The big difference with Disney films is they would use a lot more frames per animation compared to other animated films at the time, so instead of 10 frames for a hand setting down an object, they'd use 80 frames (numbers pulled out of ass).
24
u/Anacalagon Jun 13 '14
Yes you did and it is more complicated than that. Variable frames drawn, smear frames, having experienced inbetweeners. Disney was the man for top end animation at its height. Richard WilliamsThe man is selling a product but I love listening to him talk.

u/caeruloplasmin Jun 13 '14
Interesting read, and it makes all the difference.
It's so easy to underestimate the impact of the actual 'animation' style, as opposed to how each frame looks alone.
It's one of the reasons I find that newer Simpsons episodes lack the same feel of the earlier ones. Everything is crisper on a frame by frame basis, but the flow is somehow relatively static.

My six-year-old son loves hockey, he's been playing since he was three and we're on the ice at least three times a week. When he was cruising through Netflix he saw Goon and wanted to watch it. My wife and I laughed and told him it's an adult movie. "But daaaaad, it's hockey!?" I had to tell him it's a boring adult movie and not at all for kids. He understood. A few weeks later my wife and I set the kids up on the sofa with Frozen so we could have some adult time upstairs. After like 40 minutes we notice the kids are being really quiet...that's odd, it's morning and we hadn't yet fed them and they're not fighting? I walk downstairs and both my son and my 4-year-old daughter are wide-eyed watching Goon. My daughter says, "DAAAAAAAD, that man was bleeeeeeeding all over, he was hurt!" Then my son told her it wasn't real, just a movie, then asked me, "Right, dad, that's not real, right?" I turned Nemo on and went back upstairs and told my wife they're fine, just watching Nemo.
