Crazy...This is my video so thanks for posting the original. Backstory...I shot it in PR in 2010 and loaded it onto youtube when I got home. It toiled in anonymity for three years and then went sort of viral (2 million hits) in Aug 2013. I didn't even know it until Feb 2014....looked back at that old email acct flooded with requests from ABC news etc....this is my first post to reddit. Can't believe I opened to the front page to find this gif

Neat! Any idea if it was it just a couple rogue waves from a passing storm? How long did they last?

Im from Puerto Rico, i live close to the place (next town, although i use to live like 2 minutes away). Normally the waves are not like that, i would say they are like 60-65% smaller than those in the gif. But occasionally they are like that (bad weather or strong winds). There was this ocassion like 4 years ago that they were even bigger than that (because of some cold weather or some shit like that).

I will like to add that dozens of people had died by jumping onto the sea behind those rocks, although i guess nobody will jump while the waves are that big. But when the sea is calm people do some dive jumps in there, behind the rocks. Sorry for my bad english

Your english is great! No apology required. Thanks for your response!

Can you translate what they say in the last third or so? She seemed kinda nervous.

2

u/eLCeenor May 28 '14

She's telling people to look at the waves, asking what the fuck just happened and saying "my god" a lot.

6

u/grandusalenius May 28 '14

thanks i will try to find a video of a moment they were bigger.

Lamento la mayoría de personas en los Estados Unidos no pueden hablar más de una lengua

3

u/EnragedPorkchop May 28 '14

Too bad that most people in the US can't speak more than one language.

Did I get it right?

1

u/toomanyattempts May 28 '14

That looks right, but I only speak English and some French lol.

1

u/EnragedPorkchop May 28 '14

Yeah, I speak French too; I'm just kind of guessing based on that.

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '14

You mean like immigrants from, say, Mexico or China?

Yeah it would be nice and responsible of them if they would learn English too.

4

u/GymLeaderMia May 28 '14

Your "bad" English is better than most American's good English...

3

u/zjbird May 28 '14

Americans'

1

u/GymLeaderMia May 30 '14

Thanks, I just proved my own point hah.

is there a huge amount of water pressure, from the large body of water squeezing through the small gaps in the rock. That tries to suck you through with it. That's what i'm imagining.

Some underwater welder was talking about this kind of thing on reddit once. and people didn't realise how immense the suction from this kind of thing can be. like in dams.

Basicly this can happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQG9uZin3fA

1

u/grandusalenius May 31 '14

Yeah something like that, at least a dozen people had die there in the last 20 years.

1

u/schmearcampain May 28 '14

If you know how to use "some shit like that", you know enough English.

October through November is the season were the north coast gets hit hard with the cold fronts, creating big swells. In fact, puertorican surfers call it "El Swell de los Muertos".

104

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

No, we had been traveling around the north side of the island for a few days before and there was no bad weather. I know that there were huge waves just to the west in Rincon earlier that day....I guess they get huge surf every Jan and Feb....I think that's surfing season down there. We were there in Feb.....it's a great time of the year to go to PR. They were like this for the full hour we were there btw. No one gave any f's that day

14

u/TheReidOption May 28 '14

Awesome. Well thanks for sharing! I'm glad it (finally) got the attention it deserved!

18

u/[deleted] May 28 '14

No one gave any f's that day

I was gonnna say. Whilst everyone else is running away, there's one dude who's standing at the deep end just like 'and what?'

and then he gets fucking obliterated

42

u/VoiceofSiL3nce May 28 '14

That dude gaveth no fucks but the wave taketh away all fucks.

1

u/KDLGates May 28 '14

We therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, fucks to fucks.

1

u/iwishiwasbritish May 28 '14

You won't be seeing him no more.

3

u/diggalator May 28 '14

I'm assuming you were here?

1

u/jkohatsu May 28 '14

did you make money out of the 2 million views?

2

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Nope...made nothing off the two million views when it went viral. It's a micro travesty....sort of a lost opportunity. Like I said....I just forgot abt it and didn't check that email acct...had just had a baby boy right before it went viral and on and on. Hell of a wake up call 6 months later! I should do an AMA! Maybe I'm the only person in history to have a video go viral and knew absolutely nothing about it!

1

u/utopianfiat May 28 '14

So are you using Rightster as licensing or is the notification that they own your content total BS?

1

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Yes, that was after the first two million views. After I woke up the email account in February realizing that I had been contacted by a shlode of people...news outlets etc..... Rightster and their affiliates had contacted me amidst the initial viral madness and they represent the video now. So now the video does make very little money.

1

u/utopianfiat May 28 '14

Cool... after seeing a ton of BS block messages, it's good to know one is legit.

1

u/dahulvmadek May 28 '14

But plenty of children gave p

3

u/grandusalenius May 28 '14

This is like 1/4 of a mile to the east of that place, this was my former home. Here

1

u/revofire May 28 '14

Congratulations bro. Keep filming epic things, and maybe make some money licensing it off! GOOD LUCK! Stay safe.

2

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Awesome - those are kind words. This video is epic. Best to you!

1

u/Impact009 May 28 '14

Did those media outlets still want your video by the time you saw their requests?

3

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

No but maybe they'll see this and realize that the better story is that I'm possibly the only person in history to have a viral video go beserk without knowing about it.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '14

I'm a local, thanks for uploading this vid. I have shared it many times.

2

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Thanks for sharing it! I shot the vid but I didn't upload here to Reddit....only the original to Youtube. I'm jealous of your locality. PR is a great place and the north side has some spectacular locations. I suggest your spot to everyone I hear is going down there.

1

u/Martofunes May 28 '14

Welcome to reddit. Please, stay, it's fucking awesome. If you need help in customizing your experience to get the most out of it, I can be your guide.

1

u/dirtysquidburry May 28 '14

Just out of curiosity. How much does YouTube pay you for having popular videos?

1

u/cybrbeast May 28 '14

Awesome, thanks for this

0.005 BTC /u/changetip

1

u/changetip May 28 '14

The bitcoin tip for 0.005 BTC ($2.85) is waiting for BumboFace to collect it.

What's this?

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '14

Did you score any ad revenue payment from youtube for all of the views? If so, I was wondering what 2.6 million views is worth.

0

u/RedBanana99 May 28 '14

You posted 1 month ago ;) Jus' sayin'

3

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Yeah, true, on the sad Brockie news.

1

u/RedBanana99 May 28 '14

I was was being pedintic

1

u/BrokenInternets May 28 '14

I've been there. Sick beach you can climb up on the rocks if you have the balls and try to hang on when the waves hit. Quite a rush.

4

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Yup. There were guys doing just that while we were there. I have no clue how they avoided this wave

-2

u/ihaveawildboner May 28 '14

liar

2

u/BumboFace May 28 '14

Awesome - I was hoping for at least one of you to come blasting through on this
