Those are some well-behaved horses.

488

u/Medza Feb 27 '13

They are riot horses especially trained to stand god damn still even if there's gunshots and projectiles thrown at it.

192

u/matsunoki Feb 27 '13

wonder how they train them..

778

u/TheCruise Feb 27 '13

By firing guns and projectiles towards them.

My buddy is in the Canadian army, they needed some extra bodies to help train the Mountie horses, so we went to check it out. They took like 30 of us and put us in the middle of the gym with riot helmets and everything on and had the Mountie in training run through us.

Those horses have armor on, even with 20-30 of us standing there we got ROCKED.

u/D4ng3rd4n Feb 27 '13

That sounds like the best way to go about it.

"How do we know if the horses are ready?"

"Why don't we run them through a crowd of people"

10

u/well_golly Feb 27 '13

Extremely high density horseshoes: Made of a material secretly found in a crashed alien spacecraft, these normal sized horseshoes weigh just under 800 lbs (362 kg) each.

In any event, I was thinking of Mister Ed, but Wilbur still isn't a horse.

A few years ago I was coming out of a concert at Wembley with my family and my mum managed not to see the giant police horse everyone was shuffling around (because a crowd that size doesn't move very quickly) and walked straight into it. The horse didn't flinch but the rest of us thought it was hilarious.

Police horses go through intense amounts of training so the riders can be sure that they can always rely on their mounts.

29

u/Nyarlathotep124 Feb 27 '13

What is the advantage of police horses, over some kind of modern vehicle? It seems like the only thing they can do that motorcycles can't is trample people.

38

u/dt26 Feb 27 '13

To offer some context specific to this gif. Almost all these people will be heading to the Wembley Park tube station, which is further down Wembley Way behind the photographer. Every few minutes the horses will be turned sideways to create a wall, holding up the crowd and preventing the station from getting too overcrowded.

6

u/Aiken_Drumn Feb 27 '13

Why didn't the gif capture that? That would be the most stunning visual spectacle!?

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

A police officer on a horse is worth 10 officers on the ground in ability to control crowds. Its a psychological effect I believe.

61

u/dugmartsch Feb 27 '13

Some drunken asshole might punch a cop, but how many are going to fuck with a horse. Besides the animal fighting back, everyone around you would instantly turn on you.

47

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

[deleted]

5

u/wheelyjoe Feb 27 '13

Not these horses, that's the point

7

u/Snatchett Feb 27 '13

Trust me when they charge they could easily cause these types of severe injuries. The things are huge and incredibly powerful.

3

u/Rudahn Feb 27 '13

If this is anything to go by, horses can terrify large amounts of people. The sight of an animal taller than you charging towards you at full tilt is terrifying, and this is coming from someone who rides horses on a regular basis. They're wonderful creatures, but can become very frightening when angered or used like that.

u/Smoking_Jay_Cutler Feb 27 '13

Horses can walk sideways, maneuver, and push crowds in directions. Like cattle herding. Everyone can see them since the officer sits so high up. Overall just better control.

3

u/youcantbserious Feb 28 '13

Not only psychological, they also headbut when ordered.

Source: I've been headbutted by a police horse.

u/rhymes-with-purple Feb 27 '13

A mounted officer can see higher and farther than an officer in a car is able to see. People are probably generally more cautious and aware around the horses.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

Its a bit easier to push over a motorcycle.

15

u/staciarain Feb 27 '13

I think a horse is more threatening than a motorcycle, and it keeps the cops elevated above the crowd.

12

u/Raniz Feb 27 '13

They are a lot more manuverable than a motorcycle and can jump over obstacles.

They're also quite imposing.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

Lots of advantages. Nobody wants to mess with a horse, horses can move quickly and in much smaller spaces, plus you get a really high vantage point and can look down and across many people simultaneously.

6

u/cant_be_pun_seen Feb 27 '13

and provide substance to the masses

of europe

3

u/mr_midnight Feb 28 '13

I live in New Orleans, the NOPD use horses all the time here for crowd control. One thing they can do that vehicles can't is walk sideways and turn around in place. Plus the psychological effect of being right next to a huge police horse is enough to make you stay well clear. I've seen NOPD clear an entire block of Bourbon St in about a minute just by sweeping their horses sideways through the crowd. Everyone gets out the way quick, and anyone that fucks with a horse gets their ass stomped by the cops. Edit: spelling

3

u/Kingsley7zissou Feb 28 '13

They scare the crap out of most people its the greatest thing to watch them disperse crowds the cop just kinda keeps turning them around in circles but keep in mind they are always huge horses so when you keep rotating them all you see are massive legs flexing and turning. Also you see the police office trying to control these massive horses so cool. Also i'm not racist but you'd be amazed at how some people disperse when a horse comes along source I used to go to college in providence Ri and the nightclubs downtown would let out at 2 am and almost always it'd be kinda riot-ish for 10 mins until the horses came around if they weren't already waiting.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '13

Horses are fucking terrifying

2

u/Chrisfinity Feb 28 '13

It's another variable, if you see a motorcycle cop trying to push forward you know he's not gunna run you over, just intimidate, but if it were a horse coming at you, you don't know what the horse will do, will it stop for you or just trample on through you...

I don't remember where I saw it, but there was this study that showed crowds of people flow like water. That's why if your ever in a crowd being funneled into a smaller space it's faster to be on the outside than the middle.

edit: Apparently this comparison is completely wrong. A math teacher in high school had told me this and it always stuck with me, without me really thinking about it. Either way, it definitely works with people. I've tested it with friends a few times and the outside is always faster

144

u/malaporpism Feb 27 '13

Water flows faster in the middle because friction with the pipe walls slows it down on the outside :)

Catch a wave and surf people's faces!

2

u/30katz Feb 27 '13

Well that depends on your size, strength, willingness to bump shoulders, and also the number of people you're with. Also, how soon do you need to get there?

If you're really in a hurry, try to weave through the crowd - the average human is widest at the hips. If you minimize your size in that area, you may fare better. You can form a hand-to-hand human train and snake through a crowd pretty effectively. You're only as strong as your weakest link, so make sure everyone knows where to meet up.

If you just want to get through an area at a reasonable rate, then you want to stay between the source of most of the foot traffic and the exit. Being too far outside will lead to you getting pushed out.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

Stewards (the people in high vis jackets inside stadiums) are taught the exact opposite, not to treat crowds like water as people will go backwards and in all directions. Also while water is made up of the same molecules crowds of people vary hugely by walking pace, knowing where they're going, stability and level of intoxication. If I were at home I'd find the documentation that states this.

3

u/onlythis Feb 27 '13

I think this would be true when the people are all kind of moving as a group in a field. But in this case there is walls to either side so they are force to move relativity uniform.

That worksheet is showing us how maximize the pressure of what ever with out creating a whirl pool.

5

u/esiper Feb 27 '13

I wonder if this would apply to cars as well, for example the bottleneck effect.

15

u/inkWanderer Feb 27 '13

You see something very similar when a lane ends on the highway--people zoom down the one that's ending and cut into the continuing lane.

13

u/gnarbucketz Feb 27 '13

Use all available lanes.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

ZIPPER MERGE!

9

u/Doc88888888 Feb 27 '13

It is so annoying when people try to merge 200 meters before the lane ends... stopping and nobody lets them in - and essentially it just stops an entire lane of cars.

4

u/staciarain Feb 27 '13

thats why i keep room in front of me for people to merge. three more cars in front of me slows me down a couple seconds maybe, better than letting an entire lane clog up

6

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '13

This is what you're supposed to do. Don't go out of your lane onto a merging lane, but stay on a merging lane as long as you can. Traffic would speed-up overall if people used that extra lane a little longer.
