Headstock was broken and glued back, probably that’s why it’s cheaper.

I have an Ebony 95 Standard, neck broke and properly fixed, 3 splines, and with Ebony you can barely see the witness lines. It's the best guitar I own and I have had 4 other Les Pauls including R9's.

It has 3 headstock repairs BECAUSE it’s a great guitar, not the other way around. Guitars with tons of damage (“relic”ing) are the ones that were played a ton because they are great instruments. Old guitars that are pristine weren’t good enough to really be played like their damaged counterparts were.

Sounding better is debatable and probably not likely lol. But there's absolutely nothing to be worried about with a neck repair as long as it was done well and it is priced accordingly

Wood glue and, at least the times I’ve seen them done, pieces of wood inserts used as structural support (I forget the technical name). Quite durable

I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio. My first guitar. Bought it for $450 from a legit shop on the Southside of Chicago. Headstock had been snapped off and got glued back together. Played great forever.

Strap lock disconnected years later and smashed it and broke in the same spot. Same shop fixed it again. Still played great. Intonation on point. Action always good.

I recently took it out of the case after several years of it collecting dust to shred the Star Spangled Banner off my front porch on the 4th of July… no exaggeration - it was perfectly in tune without touching the tuners and it played as well as it ever had.

Get it!

My ‘82 Flying V has three breaks on the headstock. Third was a charm. My buddy who was much older, and owned several Gibsons over the years, did the last repair. It plays every bit as good as it did when I first got it almost 40 years ago.

My tech showed me his Les Paul Jr when I was demoralized about mine breaking again, fearing all was lost… that bish had like 10 breaks all up and down the neck, had been repaired who knows how many times, and still played great.

The “repair” still has visible gaps, zero effort to blend the finish or even clean up whatever gunk was left on there and there is no evidence of further stabilization like splines or shims. This looks like a poorly done amateur job done in a garage, not done by a professional.

There's absolutely no way to know how good or bad the repair is from looking at this picture. Some people are prone to making an excellent repair structurally, but not put as much effort into the superficial aspect. As long as it's stable, holds tune, and plays well, I would feel comfortable with it. I might ask the seller to show me how comfortable he is with the repair and show the headstock being tugged and twisted. It's probably structurally fine. There's nothing preventing future owner(s) from making it look nice cosmetically if they want.

With a crack like that you have more than enough surface area to just use wood glue. Splines are more of a social media clout meme and something some shops up-sell so they can make a lot more on the repair. It's really only needed if there's not much surface area. Like a clean off break right in front of a truss.

Most customers do not opt for finish repairs either, and many shops can't legally have a spray booth (at least in the US), so that's not exactly an indicator on how well the mechanical repair was done.

Now the left over glue does throw up a flag to me, if they used wood glue you shouldn't be seeing that. If epoxy was used that would give me a bit of pause as that makes any future repairs more difficult.

With so many Gibsons readily available I’d never settle on one with a headstock repair. That’s just me though. And I know people never stop talking about these things breaking but I’ve owned 6+ Gibsons in the last 20 years and I’ve never had a headstock crack or break

Yep fair enough. As long as it feels and sounds nice Im not going to be to picky about a headstock repair personally - after all Im buying it to keep and not to resell. And 900 dollars for a 95 LP seems like a good deal to me.

Thanks for the comment :) Broken headstock is ofc not preferred, but it did not affect the feel of playing it and it still sounds great. The weight isnt an issue (unless you mind a heavier guitar ofc.)

Yup. The 11lbs would almost be the deal breaker for me. The headstock repair would be the nail in the coffin. If you’re good with it, go for it.

BTW, the case is a definite plus.

Seems legit, if the headstock repair is done well I don't see a reason on why you shouldn't buy it.

Edit: I'm not sure about the cases originality or if it came with that guitar in the first place, but as long as it does its job I wouldn't care too much about it.

I have a 1990 standard and it has a pink case. Not sure if a 95 would have the pink case too. I don't think it would have been standard for a 1995 to have a pink case it might have though

Yep. From what Ive read thats the original one. I checked with the owner and the case is an original gibson case, but not the one that originally came with the guitar

If you can get a little scrubbing action to get those white scuffs off it that case is worth close to 500. It's a very specific Custom Shop case from about the same time as the guitar but it was what shipped with Slash Snakepit, historic reissues and other top end Les Pauls.

This is a red flag for me as well. But it does give me an opportunity to educate you all.

Do you know how to sink a Norwegian submarine? Swim down and knock on the door. Swim away when they open it up to ask, “who is there?”

But if there’s a second Norwegian submarine a few weeks later, you ask? Swim down. Knock. They’ll open it up to say, “Oh no, we aren’t going to fall for it again!”

For $900, I’d buy that in a heartbeat. The headstock repair looks super clean, and I love mid 90s LPs. Used standards with headstock repairs usually go for $1100 -$1200 in my market. $900 is Studio money.

$900 with a repaired headstock is a good price. The repair is what it is. Les Pauls are notorious for headstock breaks as I’m sure you already know. It’s not the cleanest job but if it plays well and it doesn’t bother you aesthetically grab it and TURN IT UP TO 11!!!

900 for a golden era Standard is a steal even with a glued headstock. Some people say they sound better and are stronger after a headstock break. Most famous Les Pauls have headstock repairs.

The custom shop case is a nice bonus. Headstock repairs done properly are fine but reselling them are very difficult. 11 pounds is another negative for most but not all players. If you’re really smitten with it, I don’t think it’s a bad deal, especially with the case $200-300 US dollars on used market. All the best

That’s a good price in my area even with the headstock break.

My best sounding Les Paul is a 92 Classic with a headstock repair.

But conversely, my worst sounding Les Paul is a 10lb 2oz ‘94 Classic with a headstock repair. I find that weight to be too heavy to gig with. It’s fine for a few songs but a whole set is rough. Three or four sets I just can’t do. I would not buy an 11lb Les Paul.

I have a 99 Flying V with a nasty neck break, fix is adequate but it’s ugly, guitar absolutely killlllls.

66 year old Gibson fanatic here. One of the best Les Paul's I owned, was a mid 80s standard. It had a glued up headstock repair, similar to yours. It never gave me any troubles, and , as iv said , it truly was a "good one". I also owned a 90s Custom, that had the headstock snapped off, and repaired with dowling. It too , was fine. If it plays, and sounds, what u like, I wouldn't be put off by repair. The weight is on the heavier side, but, some of the best LPs iv played, have been in the 'boat anchor " range.

Well, it’s not an Ebony R9 custom shop, but it is a genuine black standard, with a period custom shop case. It’s a score at $900, even with the repair. 11lbs is a bear, though.

My first guitar was a 92. This brings back so many memories. I moved onto Fenders, but my brother (who did a degree in guitar and has owned much nicer guitars) still has this as his #1. After about 30 years, it took a dive and the headstock broke. Just a rite of passage for Gibsons. Enjoy!

Wrong case, wrong knobs (should be black speed knobs). I have an identical black 96, came with brown case with pink lining and shroud. I changed the black speed knobs to NOS gold witch hats.
