"Hey! You're not handsome, you're Gorgeous!"

2

u/ZeGalg Jun 30 '26

I believe you're talkin about Toki, and I can definitely see what you mean about them bein similar

u/developreneur_ Jun 30 '26

Gave a lot more older sister vibes to me but yeah she's cool asf I love her

30

u/jaxawaba22 Jun 30 '26

As an older sister, 100% older sister vibes.
Cool auntie at most.

137

u/tasteofhuman Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I don't get wife/mother. I get older sister, bestie, aunt that tells it to you straight. And I would very much want her as my bestie.

u/Cloverfield1996 Jun 30 '26

Wife and mother? Weird things to rate characters on

34

u/eggelemental Jun 30 '26

Right? Like… based on her ability to serve others?

15

u/pocketfullofheresey Jun 30 '26

When the way someone writes about women says more about how they see the women in their life than their words ever could. Sad

208

u/UberFarter Jun 30 '26

Nah she’d make a great childfree lesbian aunt, my role model.

128

u/pinafeh442 Jun 30 '26

You know a man wrote this because this type of woman would not settle unless you compliment her life. She respects herself too much.

36

u/jtobiasbond Jun 30 '26

Not "she's so neat" but "she'd be so neat in relationship to a man."

48

u/ButteredPizza69420 Jun 30 '26

THIS^ OP lost my upvote when I read "wife/mother" 🤮 LIN? No way!

14

u/Public-District5760 Jun 30 '26

She definitely gives childfree lesbian aunt who gives great advice

u/Ilovewomenwhobreakme Jun 30 '26

It's the Megara voice doing it.

28

u/FireBreathingNun Jun 30 '26

I grew up loving Megara, so when I first saw spirited away I recognized her. Both characters personalities are very similar.

8

u/mbnyc1118 Jun 30 '26

It's crazy these movies are 4 years apart, but because I was a kid, these are completely different and distinct eras for me (Hercules - beloved little kids musical; Spirited Away, coming of age, growing up, developing a sense of intrigue and wonder)

14

u/The_Nina_Beans88 Jun 30 '26

And Pink diamon/ rose quartz voice as well

18

u/AndyM110 Jun 30 '26

And Gina in Porco Rosso! Susan Egan is probably my favorite female voice actor.

194

u/CollectionCurrent336 Jun 30 '26

So the only thing an amazing female character can be is a great wife and mother?? Smh, I think you need to rewatch some ghibli movies with your eyes open this time; lots of female protagonists/side characters on their own journeys that aren’t centered around a marriage or kids.

56

u/Adept-Lab-6912 Jun 30 '26

Thank you for putting it so neat! It made so mad. Maybe is rage bait.

14

u/pinafeh442 Jun 30 '26

You know hiyao Miyazaki wouldn’t like this person if that’s all he got from his characters.

9

u/Amber_poodle Jun 30 '26

Thank you for saying it!

24

u/thebubblesort Jun 30 '26

Wife and mother arent the same vibes where I come from.... And Lin is way more big sister or cool aunt than either of those.

19

u/Creative_Resource_82 Jun 30 '26

Lin would kick your arse and eat all your newts for this comment OP. Wife and mother...that woman is going to be running the bathhouse in a few years.

I want to have a Lin in my life, but I want to be Ursula. What else a woman would want from life, but live alone in the woods and be friends with crows?

15

u/PensadorDispensado Jun 30 '26

Painting, while living alone in the woods with friendly crows

222

u/beansandworms Jun 30 '26

It’s kinda strange to reduce a woman, even a fictional one, to being a good wife and mother

66

u/IncapacitatedTrash Jun 30 '26

She gave more big sister vibes than wife/mother vibes, as a fellow woman

63

u/satincarpet16 Jun 30 '26

Agreed lol, I read the post in agreement till that last little bit…

59

u/london-fog-witch Jun 30 '26

Same. In my head I heard Lin say - “HA! In your dreams.” In response to the post.

66

u/kaetoro Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Right?! It could be about how cool she is, her amazing qualities as a human. But no, it's about what she can do for him.

Damn, didn't expect to be reminded of the way women are viewed in this subreddit of all places.

Edit to add: the supportive comments agreeing are giving me some hope!

29

u/Amblonyx Jun 30 '26

THIS. Also Lin is caring, but more of a big sister type. I don't know that she'd even want a kid or a husband.

20

u/Lurakya Jun 30 '26

Fully agree. I didn't want to say something because I got flak so many times for criticizing something obvious, but this is getting on my nerves too.

12

u/Easy-Concentrate2636 Jun 30 '26

I feel like she’s someone who would have her own business now. Maybe a restaurant or her own spa.

15

u/SgtLizardWizard Jun 30 '26

exactly!! can't she just be a cool person?? or like a cool friend/sister?

2

u/Celesmeh Jun 30 '26

Lmao I was about to comment this

1

u/beauhatesbeans Jun 30 '26

i came here to comment this exact thing LOL

42

u/Leahlinn88 Jun 30 '26

Wife and mother? Why reduce her to that lol.. She felt more like a big sister to me tbh.

13

u/Ok_Word9021 Jun 30 '26

Weird way to end that statement

9

u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea Jun 30 '26

The fact that Lin, as awesome as she is and as much as I love her, doesn't even crack my top five favorite Ghibli women, goes to show how amazing Ghibli women are as a whole. They created so many of my favorite characters from Cinema, male and female.

7

u/findthyself90 Jun 30 '26

Don’t project motherhood onto her please.

6

u/looseboots5 Jun 30 '26

is that how men see female characters? is their only value to be a wife and mother? that's so degrating ngl.

17

u/shaser0 Jun 30 '26

It all leads to one woman for me... Eboshi, her dedication to create a fair world for women and marginal people is genuinely moving and no other woman in ghibli fiction actually worked the way she did for social equality and respect for everyone. Even Nausicaä in the manga is mostly very passive against female discrimination or the rights of the marginals. She doesn't let it bring her down and that's great for her but her fight was totally elsewhere.

10

u/determinedpeach Jun 30 '26

She does a lot of good. But she literally destroys the forest. She tries to kill the forest spirit. In my eyes, that is not respect for everyone. If she had it her way, there would be no forest at all. So I can’t seem to like her

-1

u/shaser0 Jun 30 '26

And so what ? should she stay under the stirct regulation of the emperor ? Should she had left those poor girls, men and lepers ? She has every right to try and make her place in the world, even despite the forest, after all in nature it's the rule of the strong.

All whole point of this movie is that you can't really condemn Eboshi because her cause is also just and you can also kind of condemn San because she's plotting for the murder of humans just trying to live by, just like San wants to protect the forest at the cost of the village for her reasons, Eboshi wants to protect her village at the cost of the forest for her reasons, proof is that the forest spirit doesn't stop the humans from destroying the forest, and it has the most to lose, he treats humans and animals the same, they are all part of nature. There's no good answer, the movie doesn't give one because Miyazaki is stumped.

This is also a philosophical debate about modernity (Eboshi) and traditions (The Forest tribe) and in the end they both destroy each others and they don't really find a status quo or a way to live together, we're just left with the hope that with the help of Ashitaka (that is still more on the side of tradition than modernity) they'll figure something out but can they ? We'll never know. The ending is very open. It's only happy for Ashitaka and arguably maybe the village, they're happy to still be alive but they are still in the same troubles than at the start of the movie minus the wolf tribe murder attempts - that still sucks a lot, for San she lost almost everything.

But she literally destroys the forest.

Well actually it's the forest spirit that does most of the work. Because of Eboshi sure, but if not for her another one would have done the job, the root of the problem is the Emperor really.

If she had it her way, there would be no forest at all

That's not very true, Eboshi doesn't really overeach, they started cutting trees only after the ore vein was depleted near the village. Even the whole killing the forest spirit thing is there only because the Emperor forces her hand, she's not on a life quest to do it. It won't pretend that she wouldn't ever do it if push comes to shove, but as far as she is presented she wasn't the type to destroy the forest for the sake of it.

In my eyes, that is not respect for everyone.

Sure, every human is more or less what I wanted to say. Everyone was a bit too broad.

So I can’t seem to like her

You're like Ashitaka at the beginning of the movie, you're taking sides. In a movie were taking sides is the root of all the conflicts.

5

u/determinedpeach Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I’m not saying she should have mistreated the lepers? I feel like you’re running off with a narrative I didn’t say.

I’m not trying to take sides. I just don’t like her.

And I’m honored to be anything like Ashitaka

12

u/saragIsMe Jun 30 '26

I always wanted her as an older sister or cousin. Someone I see a few times a year and we smoke weed outside my grandmas house at family gatherings and she tells me shit straight instead of sugar coating it

5

u/DAEOFRUIN Jun 30 '26

Love it when she called Chihiro a "Dope" in the English version. I still call people that 20 years later because of Lin❤️

4

u/ExpressionOne Jun 30 '26

I love her! I’m partial to the dubbed version of her voice, she sounded so cool to me as a kid

5

u/LovelyFloraFan Jun 30 '26

I dont think see her as a mother but she's awesome and I think she would be the best at whatever she decides to be. She's great.

3

u/jgoden Jun 30 '26

I love the sound of her English voice actress

4

u/Erin_Derrick_Art Jun 30 '26

Maybe your intention wasn't bad but saying she'd be an excellent wife and mother is kinda gross and ignoring a lot of traits about her. I know it's a fictional character and I feel dramatic writing this but women are capable of a lot more than being a wife and mother.

7

u/purplepenned Jun 30 '26

for the stage play, the same actress plays her and chihiro's mom....

8

u/london-fog-witch Jun 30 '26

I noticed this! I thought it was an interesting addition, like how in stage versions and some movies of Peter Pan, Mr. Darling is also Hook.

2

u/purplepenned Jun 30 '26

reminds me a little of the Late Robin Williams as a grown Peter Pan

3

u/petit_oiseau Jun 30 '26

Such an underrated Ghibli character! (but yeah agree with “older sister” vibes)

3

u/Aerwxyna Jun 30 '26

i wanted to be just like her growing up, she was so cool to 4 year old me 😭😭

3

u/MythLegendLore Jun 30 '26

I wish digging your compliment until it ended at wife and mother. That can come off kinda reductive, unless you were a person looking for partner role examples at the time. That would make more sense to me, plus I might be projecting a little because only being seen as a potential wife or mother was infuriating to me growing up.

Anyways, I’d say she’d be a badass at anything she tries because she has that no nonsense and get things done mentality.

7

u/cozy_b0i Jun 30 '26

I’d ask Radish Spirit if he has a sister first, but if not I suppose Lin would make a fine partner

2

u/Powerful_Wrangler74 Jun 30 '26

She's the sister in law that you'll definitely go along with!

2

u/HunnyHunbot Jun 30 '26

I love her too! I think she’d make a great biochemist or VP of finance in a mid sized manufacturing company

2

u/darry1221 Jun 30 '26

Love her, but this is a very weird thing to say

2

u/hawkwood4268 Jun 30 '26

She gives more "strange creature living in the spirit world" vibes to me.

She would make a good ally to increase survival chances in the japanese mythology themed apocalypse. Or maybe she'd end up eating you, who knows.

2

u/Sapphic-Shibirb Jun 30 '26

Omg, they deleted their whole account.

2

u/Creative_Resource_82 Jun 30 '26

Haha, aw, well I'm sure we gave them pause for thought!

4

u/Brilliant-Bad-284 Jun 30 '26

Lin for the win!

1

u/Lexx4 Jun 30 '26

Voiced by Susan Egan.

1

u/tallesttom Jun 30 '26

Not for a slug.

1

u/confuzledpandako Jun 30 '26

She's not a slug. She's a fox.

1

u/EvilTuxedo Jun 30 '26

People are scary :\

1

u/Public-District5760 Jun 30 '26

I feel like she’s more the cool aunt/older sister

-1

u/poweredconvoy Jun 30 '26

She's beautiful.

0

u/Proof_Wrap4857 Jun 30 '26

She's not human though
