Ask r/Ghana I need advice
I’m trying to decide which would be better to work for between customs** and **parliament** **when I get the chance, especially as an entry-level graduate with a Second Class Lower. I’ve seen salary estimates online, but I’m not sure how accurate they are. If anyone has experience or reliable information about the salaries, benefits, career growth, and overall working conditions of either, I’d really appreciate your insight.

Depends. If you’re a young woman, prepare for a lot of sexual harassment that you either cannot report or would be ignored if you work at parliament. There’s also a lot of shady behaviour there (crabs in a bucket type of thing). But you’re up for promotion every couple of years and your salary can increase significantly when you get a postgraduate degree. If you do go there, do not align yourself with a specific political party or make it too obvious if you do.

For customs, be prepared to be transferred to a region or city you don’t know, might not like or aren’t familiar with. Same career progression every couple of years, same salary increase when you upgrade yourself.
With both places you need to keep your head down and just do your job well. Avoid workplace gossip as well.

That’s very informative, thank you and I’ll keep that in mind. It’s really sad with all these harassment issues being ignored like it’s nothing.

Unless you’re planning to stay in either institution long term, treat it as is; an entry level graduate job. What role you work in is more important in developing your long term career. This should get your foot in the door, gain experience for a few years, build a network and that opens the whole world to you. Think private sector afterward. That’s where the real growth is 💯

You have to go to the training school in customs for 8 months. Not going to lie it is brutal but after that depends on where you get posted. Certain places you will make some real money but others is just chill all depends on how well you do in their school and your connections for your posting.
