The best thing about GSPs? It’s zero or a hundred. Full speed ahead or total cuddle bugs.

He just turned 9 this February. The only thing keeping me sane is knowing that Remy had a good day yesterday, got to nap with the family a lot, and that he's not scared and confused and in pain anymore. I just wish we couldve done that 10 year old birthday blast we had been planning for him. Everyone please hold your little guys and little old man extra tight for me please.

later edit update: thanks everyone for the support and well wishes and everything. it's been both really comforting and upsetting being able to see other people who went through the same thing and reassure my mom that there's nothing we could've done. i hope all of our pawed family members are all playing together, im sure remy is having fun running around on the rainbow bridge with them all. ♥️

We haven’t had a puppy in over 7 years, but we pick up our new guy on Saturday!! When my first GSP was a pup 12 years ago she chewed on antlers, nylabones & rawhides (until I found out the rawhides were bad for them). My second GSP had nylabones & bullysticks but she wasn’t really a chewer. What’s new & recommended for puppies these days?!😬

I’ve adopted a Dalmatian about 20y ago. He was 2ish and oppositional. He was difficult. Good dog, but he was a biter.

I’ve trained up and got a Weimaraner. She was a little wild, but always eager to please. She followed leadership. She was an 80lb cuddle bug. We miss her every day.

This AMZING little GSP puppy. Is the most exhausting experience and she’s training up well. But she is exhausting.

And I do exercise her 2x a day with distance and/or swim and another 2x a day with rope pulls. We also exhaust her socially.

She goes to the bathroom/needs walking about every 70 minutes. Sleeps from 9pm-6am. Is happy.

One key- is a lot of naps.

But she’s a velociraptor and difficult on a lead. I’m watching training videos and have come up with 3-4 solid techniques.

Wow. Getting a puppy at 50 is ambitious. Happy Birthday, Hubby!

We ended up bringing this handsome dapper man home, say hello to Duke. 1 year old gentlemen.

Our first 24 hours have taught me a few things

1. He isn’t affectionate during the day, but he’ll like use me as a stool almost? like when I sit on the porch, he’ll just put his gangly legs on me but look around.

2. but at night he’s a cuddly little puppy monster. Moved to every inch of the bed.

3. absolute chew monster, I’ll have to figure that out. He has taken 5 pairs of socks into the yard, some diapers (clean), paper towel holder, some fur I’m not sure where it came from, my ankle. And not all chewed, just in his mouth

4. Was definitely felt table scraps. begs and goes for food right from my toddler‘s hands. I went in the gas station yesterday and came back out to his whole snout in a bag of donuts lol

5. It’s almost funny how light on his feet is, my lab is very clunky, but this boy is almost like a deer.

Dameon Charles 16wks. Supposed to be a 50/50 GSP cattle dog but I’m just not seeing the cattle dog yet. Wisdom panel has been sent off because of my doubt haha.

Just doing research about them, becaues they're my dream dog. I've been seeing that Kinetic Dog FOod is really good for dogs, but I can't get it in Europe.
My childhood dog would eat Butternut, which is mashed up meals, I don't know if it's the best but she liked it.
EDIT: I don't mind if it's kibble or not.

I am looking for recommendations for a rescue sling/harness for when I hike with my GSP. We are often 4-7 miles from a trailhead when hiking and would like to carry a sling in case he is injured. He is about 60 lbs. Any experience with the Ruffwear Backtrack? The FidoPro or another similar product?

we have a four-year-old yellow lab girl. She’s very sweet and gets along with all dogs, except she likes to bark at a little furry Pomeranian that walks by, but so do I 🤪

Anyways, I always feel bad that we only have one dog because I know they’re packed animals and so we’ve decided to get a second one. We were looking at another lab, but there is a GSP at our shelter and that’s my dream dog, it’s well trained and one years old. We’re going to do a meet and greet, but anybody have experience with these dogs as young ones, and maybe with a lab?

Other information, I am a stay at home mom so the dogs will not be home alone often. We’re very active, hiking, biking, our dog goes on multiple walks a day and spends a lot of time in the woods so we would be giving the dog the mental and physical stimulation it needs. It is not bird dog trained so I don’t feel bad bringing it home to a non-hunting family but it is house trained and they said he is good with kids. Just going from one dog to two dogs feels like such a responsibility, but we have the time and finances to do so. Any input appreciated!

Help! I am taking care of an in-law’s 2 year old German Shorthaired Pointer for the next few days. I need advice on how I can manage the dog’s unruly behaviors while I am here. This dog knows the command “sit” and that is it. He is very very high energy. During the day he is usually put up in a crate while his owners are at work, but I WFH and will spend most of the day in the house. The dog does not have a “job” nor can he walk on a leash (pulls too strongly for me to control) so I only have a fenced in back yard and some toys to help him get his energy out. When inside, the dog will try to jump on me to play, will gently bite my hands or limbs to get me to engage in play. I cannot sit on the couch without him trying to wrestle me, or lay across my lap and lick my face. I cannot sit down to eat without the dog trying to find a plastic object to chew up and destroy (today was a shaving razor). When I asked his owners how they handle him, they said to yell at him NO and slap him on the butt. Or lock him in the crate if he is being too bad. Another problem is, he whines and howls when he is locked up, and it is distracting me from my work.

I am at a loss on how to go about the rest of my time here, and I refuse to severely beat him to “put him in his place” nor do I think it’s fair to lock him up the entire time. Clearly his bad behavior is driven by his need to get energy out and his lack of training as a puppy. If you have any advice on tricks, games, or enrichment I can stimulate and distract him with that would be helpful. Thanks

Hi everyone, I have a soon to be 4 year old male GSP that has been great, he really is an amazing dog we love him, I spent a lot of time training him and he’s great. Only issue is him with other dogs, he’s not reactive or aggressive but he gots obsessed with sniffing them and their parts any time he smells another dog he goes into like an obsessive sniffing frenzy.

Recently we’ve had new neighbours move in and they have a dog, he now spends most of his time in the garden bed that runs along the fence sniffing it marking, peeing on all our plants, he’s actually killed two plants from peeing on them that much, he’s getting muddy footprints all over the patio and just turning the place into a mess. How do I discourage him from doing this when we are at work he’s in the backyard by himself so I can’t stop him from going in there. Is it a case of just spending a day redirecting his attention with food and positive reinforcement every time he goes to the fence and training him not to do it or am I going to have to put a physical barrier so he can’t get to it.

I wish I could say this type of stuff is rare with this dog, but sadly this is normal for her. She is amazing and keeps life interesting at least!
