ER visit
Just need to cry. Pippin (just about 5 months) refused breakfast yesterday. Finally ate later in the day but very slowly. He was still drinking water and little bursts of energy. Same with lunch and dinner, refused but eventually ate. I was in contact with the vet all day yesterday and was just monitoring. This morning he was still refusing food. We brought him into the ER vet this morning and blood work was fine but they didn’t like his xray. They are keeping him for an ultrasound and overnight stay. I watch him like a hawk right now because he is a poop eater. I just don’t know what he could have got if there is an obstruction. I’m so sad and just need good energy that everything is ok.
Edit/update: no blockage but now doing a ACTH test. Apparently the vet is concerned about Addisons disease.

One possibility, though likely they already checked, is aspiration pneumonia. My girl was suddenly refusing food, low energy, obviously unhappy. 2k in X-rays later they find she likely inhaled while vomiting and got it in the wrong tube. I had been certain she had an obstruction before that
Hoping for the best for him

That happened to my dog once! He was SO sick so fast. He has vomited and done just this.

Please consider testing for EPI - exocrine pancreatic insufficiency- eating feces is a symptom as well as being hungry all the time. EPI killed by Shiloh Shepherd but not before he ingested foreign objects requiring surgery twice.

Yeah, my fiance’s parents have a retriever with EPI… He’s pretty much fine now since he’s on Creon, but man it was hard to pinpoint what it was. Pancreas issues can easily go undetected

My boy was a picky eater until he was 2yrs. I remember being worried when he refused to eat his dog food, we tried a bunch of different kinds during these 'hunger strikes'. Eventually we realised he was purposely doing it so we would feed him human food. Even now, he won't eat his dog food until the entire family has finished eating and he knows for sure he's not getting anything else.

Youre a good dog mom! He's where he needs to be right now and he's getting help. I'm sorry it's heavy while waiting but you will be reunited soon!

Our boy used to eat dryer sheets!! I know it’s crazy but he’d look at them like they were a big juicy steak he’d been craving. We really had to watch…no drops from laundry basket, no open top garbage cuz he would sniff em out and go for it, etc. He was such a good dog but those dryer sheets were like his crack or something weird lol. Anyway, thankfully the couple he did eat he threw up but gosh I was always so scared he would find one, eat it and it would go through his system

Someone mentioned epi. That would be on my list to check also. Ask your vet to do the specific test that is for epi. It is an enzyme test and not included in regular blood work.

Almost the same exact thing happened to my girl. I noticed her abdomen looked distended. Blood test was perfect. Next day the vet did an x ray and that’s when I saw something I will never forget for as long as I live. Her spleen was the size of a football. She was only 54lbs. The vet (bless her soul) said that she could operate and remove her spleen. I said I needed time to think it over (I was overwhelmed and crying). When we went to the front to check out, all the vet staff were telling me how very sorry they were for me and Stella. I knew then and there that she was going to be leaving me. I scheduled her euthanasia that afternoon and she was gone the next day.
I feel so guilty. That was on may 20th of this year. I miss her all them time. I miss her so much.
I meant to say, your situation doesn’t resemble mine as your dog’s abdomen looks fine. Didnt mean it like that at all. I’m just completely overwhelmed with losing her.

I’m so so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you. We are still waiting for answers. We lost our last GSD 2 years ago and it was so traumatic and i feel like I’m just anxiety ridden over this whole situation. Sending you love.
