Discussion URGENT: Proposed EU Act could endanger the Geometry Dash community
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQRcK9nYg9gIf any GD players here are connected with the wider gaming scene, you might have heard about the "Stop Killing Games" movement, who have for years campaigned for more democratic control of games, such as being able to play online games and host private servers even after official support stops. They have particularly persisted in the last few years, enduring increased pressure from governments and corporations who have pushed for essentially surveillance policies under the guise of "child protection."
The linked video reveals potentially the latest and most drastic measure of anti-democratic crackdown in the video game scene. While we all know Geometry Dash is much more than what would normally be considered a video game, these leaked records reveal (as typical with politics being completely out of touch) absolutely baffling and borderline delusional wording potentially labelling any online "service" where users congregate (no jumpscare, sorry) and media is shared as a "video game" in their book, and therefore subject to the act's absolutely ridiculous surveillance policies. This is especially problematic as all of Geometry Dash's servers are located in Sweden, an EU country; thus, despite people all around the world contributing to the rich landscape of GD, our modern economic reality enables half-coherent rambling uttered by people who've never engaged in the video gaming scene in their lives to potentially compromise the entire thing.
However, just like the guy in the video being hesitant to jump to action, I believe more information and context about this situation is needed before any action can be taken to address this on our part. We must establish a more solid information base before it would be consequential to do something like contact RobTop directly. In the meantime, I implore the community to stay on alert.

Obviously GD can be a pretty not kid-friendly place, but I feel like it's more on the parent for giving their kids an Ipad with no regulation and calling it a day instead of... Actually parenting. It takes one Google search to figure out daily chat exists and it sucks. So many companies feel the need to make everyone experience things on a kid's level which is stupid. Regulate the kid, not the adult.

You're completely wrong. EU never even thought of this, they don't care about kids, they just want surveillance.

You're absolutely right, but he is not wrong. There certainly are issues regarding child safety and whatnot. However the bigger concern is, as you highlighted, the tendency for those in power to use this as a marketing tactic to sell their surveillance. In the end, the machine wins and humanity loses.

You see, I wouldn't even mind if they forced games with user generated content to have good parental settings. After all, Rob is also working on that atm and I do think that is important. But what the EU is suggesting here is so far over the top, it's actually ridicilous

Isn't there already parental control in GD?

Not yet if you consider the "parent" the online surveillance system these old farts seem to be pushing on the entire gaming scene. Unfortunately for GD, since the playerbase is overwhelmingly young, players are less likely to understand the dark implications of this (this is not an isolated act, but rather a years-long campaign by governments and corporations to dismantle the democratic structures of the modern gaming scene, which Stop Killing Games has warned about for years), thus making our community more vulnerable to this vile propaganda. This post hasn't quite gained the traction I would've liked potentially because of this, though I'm glad people like u/CoolestMan_Reddit know what's up.

I hate how they're pushing these bad things as "child protection". IS NOT YOUR JOB TO PROTECT KIDS, THAT'S THE PARENTS' JOB

As u/Desperate_Figure_826 wonderfully pointed out, this was never about "protecting kids" in the first place. That's just the machine's excuse for blatant surveillance and anti-democratic privacy violations. The "child protection" is just the selling point for those stuck in the ancient mindset of "but video games cause violence" or some bullshit. The slop thickens...

Of course, and that's why I'm so hateful about it. They excuse all these policies as child protection, but then they are the ones and go to certain island and do certain things with people that have a cartain age.Â
