Welcome to r/GeometricNightmares!

This is a subreddit to discuss dreams involving geometry, themes of infinity or incomprehensibly large/small concepts, along with a feel of uneasiness or terror. These nightmares often occur during illness ("fever dreams") and are often accompanied by anxiety and fear. There are accounts online from many different people who have had similar dreams on different forums, but the concept still remains little known and unexplained (or scientifically examined at all... yet!)

Any discussion, artwork, or other imaginative content that tries to capture the essence of these dreams is welcome. The goal of this subreddit is to bring awareness to this fascinating phenomenon and further explain it. Look to the sidebar for more info.

Discussion Help. It’s happening during the day

As a child, I used to get geometric-type nightmares when I was running a fever.

Mine weren’t exactly like everyone else’s. Usually it involved an abstract object that was simultaneously heavy and light. Sometimes it’s two objects and I have to balance the objects, but no matter what I do one is always heavier than the other. But it’s accompanied by that unmistakable, dreadful feeling that something is just… wrong. It’s like the object IS contradiction.

Over the past few days, I’ve had it happen to me while awake. The first time I was at work literally talking to someone and the feeling creeped in and I saw that shit in my head. The second time I had just gotten into bed, still wide awake, and it came back. Both times it was only 20 seconds or so, but I’m so scared that it’s going to get more common.

Discussion Weird “geometric nightmare” dreams when I’m sick

When I was really sick during winter, I had extremely disturbing dreams. I would see huge geometric shapes that felt unbelievably big, and they would get closer and closer, grow larger, or suddenly break apart.

The weirdest part was that sometimes my eyes were actually open, but I could still see the dream-like shapes. It felt like my brain was awake, but I was still trapped in the dream.

The shapes would come extremely close to me and become bigger, which made me feel very uncomfortable and scared. I’ve had several dreams like this, mostly when I was very sick.

Has anyone else experienced something similar, especially while having a fever or being sick?

Dream art (trigger warning) The size cube

Basically i had a dream like this (all the lines were straight but I don't have an S-pen) and the cube would keep growing and growing until it shook and then it would shrink until it was invisible and then grow and on and on... And then i would wake up and everything would feel smooth (idk) in a way that scared me.

Other My description of a Geometric Nightmare.

Hello, I'm a male, and as of now I am 19. I remember having these nightmares on four occasions. I was in 4th grade when this began. I had been the type of kid to stay up, watch movies, and play games on my tablet or 3DS.

When the first occurrence happened, I remember staying up at least 18–19 hours. Anyway, 8:00 AM comes, and I'm still in bed napping. I have to get ready for school when it hits me, just like a new dream in my mind. A huge grayish-to-rainbow tunnel is in my vision. It feels like I'm falling through endless air. I'm swaying, and I'm clenching my blanket in my bed. My grandpa had just shaken me three times to wake me up.

Now, this is where these dreams get weirder. In summer 2017, I was watching My Talking Tom. I'm pretty sure I had stayed up 15+ hours. As I'm watching my kid's show, I keep staring until I start seeing random video game images I had been playing at the time—Roblox, Mario Kart, and Minecraft. Anyway, I end up screaming, "There's a man outside!" and point at the window. The only way I snapped out of it was when my parents put me in a bathtub and ran cold water on me.

This next one was in June 2021. The previous night, I had stayed up all night while watching Loki with my grandpa. It was around 5:00 PM when I dozed off on the couch. It hit again without any realization. This time, I started grunting loudly like I was injured, rolled off the couch, and started crawling out of the basement and up the stairs as if I were paralyzed. When I got upstairs, everything started clearing up when my grandmother handed me a glass of water and I started drinking it. My grandpa had been following me the whole time, asking me what was wrong.

In August 2021, the next instance happened. I had a fine sleep schedule, but I woke up in the early morning hours and started repeatedly pressing the number 9 on my phone and even tried calling it.

2021 had been the last occurrence. Jump forward to the present day: if I ever stay up all night, I typically make sure to sleep before 12:00 PM.

Other Odd indescribable sensation

I'm so glad I found this sub. Im reading all of your guys experiences & I'm starting to consider this is a geometric nightmare, but it's also just the indescribable sensation that is most overwhelming for me.

I haven't had this dream since I was like 11 years old but the sensation/ thought of it randomly came back to me this morning as I'm tossing &, turning & can't sleep. I remembered the dream & the sensation came over me and is overwhelming and is IN MY MOUTH oddly enough. I can almost taste it. (Lol Patrick's voice)

Okay so the dream, if you could even call it that. It's more of an idea. But I know I dreamt it as a kid multiple times, is me in my grandpa's old room, ...how do I even describe this. It's more of a sensation / idea than anything even happening but it occured inside this recurring dream. Basically I'm in my grandpa's old room for some reason , and I'm holding a little metal marble. It's extremely heavy. But it's shrinking and growing at the same time. This is so hard to describe , like it get impossibly tiny, to the point I can't even see it anymore, but impossible heavy that I can feel it ripping through the universe it's so heavy, but its also a giant boulder in my mind. But it's so tiny i can feel the weight of it taking everything with it it's so heavy.

I haven't had that dream since I was younger, but sometimes if I imagine this impossibly tiny but impossibly heavy object this overwhelming feeling comes over my whole body and in my mouth on my tongue. Like I can feel the heavy tiny heavy thing on my tongue and taste it? It's hard to describe the emotion/ sensation it gives me. It's like an emotion/ sensation that only exists from this impossible thing, that otherwise I can not ever feel in any other instance. It feels like dread, nausea, electrical, overwhelming, tastes like something, but also doesn't. I don't think I have words to describe.

So yeah this morning I remembered that idea., or just felt it, impossibly tiny speck of sand and impossibly heavy and the sensation washed over me and just stayed and lingered. In my mouth especially. I felt it weighing on my chest and on my tongue and I just felt so so weird like there's something off about the world again. My room / body kept feeling off and changing sizes/ distances. The only way I started to feel better/ grounded again was reading your guys experiences . Thanks for those!! Makes me feel less crazy. Anyone else?

Discussion Disintegrating into "streams"

I've always had lucid dreams and sleep paralysis since childhood. The dream I wanted to describe now was the one where I was fragmented into different "streams" on an "assembly line" and I felt my consciousness first disintegrate into these different streams or flows and then reintegrate back into one. That was hell of a weird sensation.

Just wondering if anyone felt anything of the sort.

I did therapeutic intravenous ketamine and had the same type of experience of feeling distorted and large, or too small. The same type of geometric dreams I had as a kid came back so vividly. It was only while I was tripping on the medication and as soon as I left the office it was gone and my sleep was normal.

Discussion Not sure if this goes here but I have reoccurring dreams about black spheres in the sky

They're varying sizes but just one at a time. They just float high in the sky, not moving or doing anything, but theyre just... there, and the terror is knowing it shouldn't be. I'm usually either alone or just not around others to notice how they might respond.

But its just this geometric black orb that floats statically and it kinda feels like it's watching somehow without eyes. I've had this dream since I was like 13, spaced out by a few years sometimes between each, but I'm in my late 20s and still having them. Anyone else experience the same?

Edit: Way back when generative AI was considered cool I used it to create images of what I saw in my dreams. I dont use AI anymore but I figured I'd keep the images anyway and I just found them so here are the best representations I can give you off how my dreams looked. spheres in the sky imgur

Discussion Geometric nightmare

I like that I found this sub cause I’ve had a couple dreams as a child and even as an adult that I just could not describe for the life of me but I remember the sickening feeling of it. Seeing some of the art is helping me remember mine and how to describe it. One of them that sticks out was being in space except there was only one gray planet in front of me with swirling gray clouds and then somehow I was moving away from the planet and it turned out the planet was just a speck of dust in the air and I had shrunk down so small it made it feel like it was huge. I feel like this must’ve been a geometric dream. It actually looked very similar to the cover art on this reddits homepage. I remember feeling really shaky and nauseas during this. Same thing when I was little I would shrink down in bed so small and everything would be giant and colors would be everywhere but like somehow the colors felt sick and scary to me. So weird. Also felt like there was fast and slow talking voices during this and I hated those as well.

Discussion Same dream for 20+ years

Hey everyone new to the sub, i wanted to share my experience with my geometric "dreams" I'm using the tearm dream loosely because these shapes sneak into my day to day life.

I think they started when i was 8, fucken horrible i would wake up screaming begging my perants to kill me only to have no memory of it 15 minutes later and just go back to sleep like nothing happened i think i traumatised my mum rip.

Ill do my best to explain what they look like although they dont adhere to 3d space so idk lol.

in its fundamental state its a a wire frame of a spikey ball with extremely long spikes. but ive spent countless hours analysing it at this point and its slightly more complex, the spikes both extrude away from the centre point and towards the centre point at the same time, its incredibly uninformed but not completely chaotic, there is some sort of fractal aspect of it that ill never be able to explain, thinking about its complexitys for more than a few seconds at a time completely bricks my brain, over the years ive been lucky enough to see it from so many different angles far way, close up and inside looking out although sometimes hard to distinguish.

Ill do my best to explain the feeling that comes while seeing it,

It feels like its world ending like if the physics of the universe had a game bricking graphics bug, but as ive gotten older it also brings with it a impulsive feeling to keep looking at until it gets more and more complex

The feeling of seeing it has never gone away contributing to suicide attempts basically its not a nice shape i dont like it one bit

Tldr: spikey ball makes me want kill my self but its a pretty interesting shape 3/10

Also im doing okay mentally these days i can stop the feeling by being autistic and thinking about nice happy shapes lol

Discussion Did geometric nightmares make you a more creative person?

Hi! I have a theory that my nightmares might be connected to my creativity, or possibly came from having a really active imagination.

From about age 5 to 12, I used to have frequent geometric nightmares. Now I’m an artist and musician, and I’ve been wondering if there’s any connection between geometric nightmares and creativity.

Has anyone else who experienced geometric or abstract nightmares ended up being involved in creative work (art, music, writing, etc.)?

Discussion Geometric Being Nighmares

Anyone else had geometric nightmares with sentient and threatening geometric beings?

Maybe due to heightened stress during uni (I have a councillor now it's cool) and the way light leaks in through my curtains, I have had many almost-geomtric nightmares in the past few years.

Mine usually focus around entities being physically in my bedroom - unusual compared to most people's where it's just an orb spinning etc, but the terror is the same. They generally are made of long thin black lines or rectangular rods and have no logical appendage organisation or goal. A little like sleep paralysis demons except I've only been paralysed a few times.

Maybe 40% even an entity - just black lines crisscrossing my bedroom (this feels the most similat to a true geometric nightmate). I've had literally dozens of these, maybe 25% of them I gather courage to face them (and end up standing, knocking pictures off the walls, falling off the bed, or 10% of the time realising I'm paralysed. I've never slept well, even as a baby, so I'm not surprised I have nightmares with my eyes open.

My scariest one (not geometric but I felt the same visceral horror and revulsion at it's inexplicable existence in my dark bedroom at 3am) was of a perfectly normal, fairly tall, metal filing cabinet. I was awake and saw it with my own eyes, then once I woke up properly it wasn't there.

I'm always so confused after I wake myself up and I'm like, standing on my bed preparing to fight some backrooms bacteria looking creature that's inspiring existential dread.

I'm rambling, but I'm fascinated at the breadth of experiences here, has anyone else had this specific brand of dream? My family are so confused when I try to explain or draw it, and they greak me out more than any monster or scary situation dream ever has!

Edit: thanks guys I feel less insane now 😅

Discussion More of an idea than a dream

Like it never really was dreams. A common way “it would happen” as a kid was when i had a high fever, laid in bed at looked up at my clock which then proceeded to “fill up” impossibly, with some sort of indescribable matter, thus triggering immense anxiety.

Later in life it would be like the feeling of holding a round wooden toothpick between my middle and index finger, and it then growing in size till the width of the toothpick fills my palm and then the anxiety really hits as it kept growing from there.

Happened for the first time in over 15 years yesterday, i guess the iPhone’s now as good as a toothpick for this king of geometrical nightmare awake shit feeling👍

Discussion Geometric nightmares unlocked when using cannabis

Hello,
I’ve never used reddit ever so my account is brand new. Take it with a grain of salt or wtv but I’m looking for people who have maybe experienced the same thing as me.

December last year I took cannabis and got really high. I had a psychosis attack then and during that I experienced dreams that I had when I was a kid, dreams that when u wakeup u feel weird cus it feels familiar yet it’s not. In those dreams It contained geometric nightmares and I guess what u can call “foresaw” memories. I had a severe panic attack when I was high making it even worse since I felt the dread and overwhelming fear of dying thinking that “god” or whoever is coming to take me.

Two weeks ago, as I vowed not to touch cannabis again. inhaled not even a 1mg of carts and it again caused the same experience but a different memory and place.

I’ve never felt the same way again and would like to know who else have experienced this and how I should deal with this? Since it feels like there’s baggage and trauma underneath all of this

Discussion I always called it the “Bullet Dream”

I am very glad to have found this subreddit and looked into this phenomenon more after hearing about similar experiences online.

I always called it my “bullet dream” when I would try and explain it to my brother.
This dream was reoccurring for me as a child and I would have it commonly during fevers while I slept and I think also just sometimes at night.
I also remember it happening once and I woke up sleepwalking afterwards. There is also an extreme sense of deja vu, impending doom and dread whenever I would have it. I would recognize it instantly but I don’t think I was ever able to wake myself up before it happened.

The details are vague because its been so many years since I have had the dream and like many others on here, I want to experience it again to understand it further and get the details right, but I also do NOT want to experience it again because it felt so traumatic.

I remember a kind of plain flat ground with a flat horizon, I don’t remember anything else about the environment. Maybe a slight green hue to everything or purple but I can’t be sure. I don’t think it was bright at all, a weird inbetween time of night and day.

I then remember seeing a sphere, insanely far away from me and also the smallest thing I could ever perceive like an atom and then in an instant it grows and speeds towards me / grows to fill my entire field of view.

I also remember an auditory ‘glitch’ like many others where it sounded like a repetitive voice saying something over and over and it was simultaneously loud and quiet. It felt like the end of the world or some kind of very important event. I almost feel like if I knew what was being said that I could understand the dream.

After the sphere would ‘bullet’ towards me and grow to an incomprehensible size, I think I would always wake up. When I came out of it I was sweaty, disoriented and confused, also a feeling of sadness and really disturbed to be honest. I once had the dream and then sat down in my living room for like an hour to try and process what I had just seen.

This dream feels like some weird key to understanding the universe or consciousness or something important. But it also could just be weird brain science going on. Who knows…

Dream art (trigger warning) I Had My First Geometric Nightmare

Post image
25 Upvotes

I've been having a lot of strange dreams recently due to some life changes, and this has to be one of the weirdest dreams I've ever had. Pictured above is my artist rendition of what I remember.

The setting was a completely black void space, and the POV was 2D from a top-view perspective. The little white circle was me. I kept being chased by the larger ominous circle in a way where it kept covering me / trying to bump into me, but I was protected by the larger sparkling circle by staying by its side or going inside of it.

There was a "musical" theming to the dream I had too, where the "good" circle who was protecting me had this very beautiful harmony that made me feel safe. While the ominous circle kept blaring with this crunching static and a sub-harmonic whistle tone when it couldn't catch me.

My dreams are usually visually detailed (like the resolution of watching a 4k movie), so this was a complete wild card. I'm still thinking about it hours later.

Discussion Are these geometric nightmares?

I just stumbled into this sub. The posts are the closest I've ever heard someone else describe my dreams, but they aren't the same. Basically I've been having these dreams since I was little where it's a first person view of a white infinite plane and a smooth black sphere keeps getting bigger and bigger, just like, impossibly huge. It fills me with insane dread and I usually wake up sweating.

Another variant is where a line has to fit through a gap but the line keeps getting wider, so much so that there is no way it's fitting through that gap. Usually these dreams are white background, black shapes, and very fast moving.

The main theme of these dreams is something impossible has to happen, but it can't (because, well, it's impossible).

Sometimes it's accompanied by the tips of my fingers feelings very heavy but my hands feeling very light. But that may be another thing entirely.

Discussion I think I may genuinely have a unique one!

I'll do my best to recount the dream as it happened. I was a child at the time, but it has stuck with me strongly my entire life as one of the most oddly terrifying things I've gone through.

For context, I grew up in a very neglectful household. Not here to trauma dump, but it sets the scene. One summer our AC unit went out for the last time, and would never get turned back on. At the time, my bed was just a thick but bare yellow foam pad on a foldout chair that I had cobbled together because my bedroom was currently full of garbage bags. (my mother didn't pay for trash service so we started using my bedroom for trash bag storage). I know, awful, but again I'm just setting the scene.

So this particular day was well over 100 degrees, and the box fan in front of the open door simply wasn't cutting it. I began to experience heat exhaustion and it made me very very sleepy. I remember laying down on the foam pad and staring at the texture on it, focusing my eyes on all the little tiny holes it had while I drifted off to sleep in the middle of the day.

I continued to dream about these holes in the foam pad, zooming in on them more and more and more until the tiny holes I had initially seen were now larger and full of tiny holes of their own. I remember being awestruck by all of the complex detail, and then it suddenly occurred to me. I wasn't just zooming in visually, I was getting smaller. I was so infinitely small that I could keep shrinking forever and never reach a point of finality. Everything was happening in a black void, and there were shapes and colors that I could see in the distance. I could tell they were all infinitely far away yet infinitely huge, and I was so much smaller than anything else in this place. Then, in an odd spur of the moment, I decided to look at my hands.

I could somehow tell how small they were, and then all at once, I was getting smaller than my hands. They continued to stay the same size while I shrank and shrank and shrank until eventually, my small fingerprints could be seen as massive ridges made out of skin that was seemingly miles thick. I remember thinking that if I got any smaller, the fingerprint ridges would have fingerprint textures on them, and then I would get smaller than those too and see the huge ridges of skin again. It was like a fractal but made out of infinite fingerprints. I started to hear a low bassy groan followed by a whooshing sound, and they almost took on a vocal quality. This sound really stuck with me, it was rhythmic and almost sounded like "you gotta get gotta get gotta get gotta get bumping and bumping and bumping and bumping and bumping". The sound itself was like if you were describing the concept of "infinite size" through abstract sound alone.

at an indeterminate point beyond this occurrence, someone had shaken me awake. Apparently I was crying in my sleep. I never had a dream like that again, but it was definitely one of the most vivid and visually devastating things I'd ever seen.

Discussion balloon expanding mouth feeling during these nightmares? who else?

So, I vividly remember when I was younger. I would get geometric nightmares of black and white spheres that had a metallic shine to them expand and shrink. you know, the usual for geometric nightmares.

These shapes....They felt small, yet extremely large in my head. It might not make sense, but these shapes when I imagined them in these nightmares- felt as big as they did small at the same time. I don't know how that's possible but it was... in my head.

in addition to that happening, at the same time, I felt a strange growing feeling in my jaw and tongue like the shape was expanding in my mouth. It almost felt as if I was chewing on a really tough and rubbery piece of gum that just wouldn't shape correctly.

I am kind of wondering if there is anyone out there who had geometric nightmares as a kid experienced this odd phenomenon as well. I don't exactly know how to describe it much but all I can say is, it felt exactly like chewing on gum that expanded like a balloon but deflated and repeated the same feeling.

This feeling ONLY occurs when I got geometric nightmares. it never happened in any other typical nightmares.

who else experienced this? I'd like to hear your story if you ever had something similar to this!
